BMW recently had a little fun with two of the company's past DTM champions. Roberto Ravaglia and Bruno Spengler, winners of the 1989 and 2012 championships, respectively, both showed up at the world-famous Hockenheimring with their title-winning cars. The two swapped seats, with Ravaglia taking the helm of Spengler's BMW M3 DTM racer and Spengler sliding behind the wheel of Ravaglia's first-generation M3 racer in the classic BMW Bank livery, and headed for the track. Spengler got a 23 second head start in the first-gen M3 with Ravaglia chasing behind.

It didn't take long for the older hotshoe to sort out his new ride and close the gap. The short clip below follows the two as they make their way around the circuit, but the really interesting portion comes when the pair begin discussing what they like and don't like about each other's machines. You can check out the full video below for yourself.
Continue reading Watch two championship-winning DTM cars from BMW go head-to-head

Watch two championship-winning DTM cars from BMW go head-to-head originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 May 2013 17:02:00 EST.
Car and Driver asked the head of BMW M, Friedrich Nitschke, a few questions about what the go-fast division had in mind for the future, and was rewarded with some enlightening answers. The best news to purist ears is that Nitschke said customers don't want all-wheel drive on their M cars, so it's the rear wheels alone that will propel new product into the future. If you want both an M badge and four driven wheels, it's the X5 M, X6 M and M Performance models you're looking for in the catalog.

"Mixed bag" is the phrase you're looking for regarding the other answers. Nitschke said that future M engines "at the core of their architecture" would "be closer to BMW AG engines" that are optimized for M cars, instead of following in the line of unique marvels like the V10 and naturally aspirated V8. They will keep the high redlines, however, with Nitschke saying "there is room beyond" the 7,000 rpm mark in BMW's current V8 turbos.

Managing weight will keep the same priority for M that it is for every other brand, so electrically assisted power steering is coming, as is an "unconventional" materials mix. At the smaller end of the M scale, Nitschke described three-cylinder engines as "attractive," saying that the brand can produce more than 310 horsepower from a three-pot.

As for the current M3, it's all gone. Nitschke said the company has about six more months of coupe and convertible production, but the units to come already have customers "on principle."
BMW says current M3 sold out, no new AWD M models planned originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 May 2013 08:25:00 EST.
Last time we saw the upcoming BMW M4 out testing, it was heavily clad with camouflage and decidedly homely looking (as most early development mules are). But in this latest set of photos, the M3 coupe successor has started to come into its own skin, and we're seeing a shape more closely akin to that of a rendering we brought you a few months back.

Unsurprisingly, the M4 coupe looks very similar to the 4 Series Concept that BMW debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. And while non-M version of the 4er will likely look a bit more sedate, these spy shots clearly show an aggressive front fascia, large wheels and the usual quad-exhaust rounding out the rear end.

Naturally, the M3 sedan will launch before this M4 coupe (and convertible), and powertrain details are still unclear as of this writing. We understand that the current M3's naturally aspirated V8 will be axed in favor of some sort of turbocharged six-cylinder engine, and we've heard plenty of rumors as to what, exactly, it might be, but we have yet to hear any official confirmation.

The 4 Series will launch later this year as a 2014 model, and we expect the M4 to follow suit about one year later as a 2015 model.
BMW M4 sheds some camouflage for latest test run originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 10:00:00 EST.
Do you like to drink in public, where big, fragile glass bottles full of expensive booze are a hassle and a liability? Do you ever drink so hard that your very drinking vessel - even a sturdy one like a metal flask - just isn't extreme enough? Do you like Scotch whisky? Do you like to drive in circles and listen to white guy blues?

If you answered "yes" to any or all of the questions above, and if you've got about $900 burning a hole in your pocket, Oakley and The Macallan have got a flask to sell you. Made from "food-grade steel, carbon fiber and aerospace-grade aluminum" we can't think of even one compelling reason to plunk down 600 pounds sterling for the flask. But hey, the completely over-the-top commercial that sells the thing has got a bunch of high-dollar sports cars, a helicopter and a naked lady in a bathtub... watch it below, and try not to drink and drive.
Continue reading Watch Oakley test out its flask's durability with a parade of pricy cars

Watch Oakley test out its flask's durability with a parade of pricy cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 15:28:00 EST.
Word has it BMW has its heart set on giving the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series a run for its money in the US. According to BimmerBoost.com, the German automaker has been making more and more noise about offering a number of specialty models aimed specifically at enthusiasts. While at the Detroit Auto Show this year, the BMW PR machine revealed 2013 will be "an interesting year" and that buyers can expect one or two products aimed specifically at swiping buyers from the clutches of the C63 AMG Black Series. The news came courtesy of Automobile writer Marc Noordeloos' Twitter machine.

Noordeloos reportedly interviewed several executives familiar with the M models while in Detroit, and says the M division would like to offer hardware like the M3 CSL, GTS or CRT to buyers here in the States. That sounds great to us, but saying something doesn't make it true, and manufacturers rarely find it in their hearts to bring money-losing machines to our green shores. Still, that won't stop us from crossing our fingers.
BMW may be planning AMG Black Series competitors originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Feb 2013 09:59:00 EST.
In just its first season back in DTM race series, BMW pulled off a trifecta of wins (driver's title, manufacturer title and team title), and the automaker is celebrating with a limited-production commemorative version of the M3 called the DTM Champion Edition. BMW said that only 54 of these cars will be produced starting in February, but it did not say in which markets the car will be available. Included in the car's 99,000 euro (about $130,000 in the States) price is the chance to attend the BMW M Fascination Nordschleife driver training course at the Nürburgring.

Designed to look like and celebrate the Team Schnitzer BMW DTM racecar driven by Canadian Bruno Spengler in the 2012 season, the M3 DTM Champion Edition comes exclusively in a Frozen Black metallic paint with matte black wheels and BMW's M stripes running across the carbon roof and decklid. There are fender and rear-quarter-window decals to give it an authentic racecar look. Inside additions include door sill elements that replicate Spengler's helmet design, and his signature and the car's sequence number can be found on the instrument panel's carbon fiber trim.

BMW says the car will be sold in "various international markets," but we doubt we'll ever see it on sale in the US. Scroll down for BMW's press release.
Continue reading BMW celebrates DTM win with limited edition M3

BMW celebrates DTM win with limited edition M3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Dec 2012 15:46:00 EST.
If you don't remember the batty G-Power G1 Hurricane RS, here's a little refresher: imagine 600 horsepower from a supercharged version of the 4.0-liter V8 that powers the BMW M3, shoved into the engine bay of the 1 Series M Coupe. G-Power says the creation is good for a top end of 205 mph, and the crew at Auto Sport recently got the chance to explore the machine's upper octaves. Fortunately for us, they brought along a camera to capture the ride. While their top-end run didn't quite manage to break the magical 200 mph barrier, the G1 Hurricane RS did manage to serve up a sprint to 195 mph. Impressive.

Of course, the video also includes all the requisite throttle blips and shots of the car getting sideways on command. Looks like loads of fun, but we feel compelled to remind everyone to keep their antics off of public roads and on the track where they belong. Check out the video below to see the G1 Hurricane RS dash to 195 mph.
Continue reading Watch the G-Power G1 Hurricane RS sprint to 195 mph

Watch the G-Power G1 Hurricane RS sprint to 195 mph originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 04 Nov 2012 18:02:00 EST.
If you weren't fortunate enough to grab one of the 19 sinister-looking Frozen Black Edition M3 Coupes back in 2011, BMW has a new ultra-limited M3 for you to dream about. The 2013 BMW M3 Coupe Frozen Limited Edition goes on sale in January with a starting price of $76,395 including destination, and unlike previous Frozen Edition models, this latest one will be offered in three different matte colors: Frozen Red, Frozen White and Frozen Blue.

The price for the Frozen Limited Edition is a premium of more than $16,000 compared to a base M3 Coupe, but in addition to the car's exclusivity, BMW made sure to include plenty of added content. In the styling department, the M3 Coupe Frozen Limited Edition rides on matte black, 19-inch wheels, adds glossy black accents on the grille, fender vents and exhaust outlets, and has the carbon fiber roof panel. The cabin features black and carbon leather throughout, with contrast stitching that matches the car's exterior color.

A handful of options are also offered on the Frozen Limited Edition, like the M-DCT gearbox, BMW Individual audio system, and heated front seats. Hit the jump for BMW's press release.
Continue reading BMW announces 2013 M3 Frozen Edition in Red, White and Blue

BMW announces 2013 M3 Frozen Edition in Red, White and Blue originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 27 Oct 2012 18:01:00 EST.
Save some unforeseen circumstance we've yet to encounter, you'll never hear us turn down shoving extra horsepower at a vehicle. The minds at G-Power seem to understand that concept better than most and have just finished pumping a full 600 horsepower into the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. The team is calling their newest creation the G1 Hurricane RS, and the car makes use of a supercharged version of the same V8 that powers the BMW M3. Likewise, the tuner's engineers plucked the dual-clutch gearbox from the larger M for service in the G1 Hurricane.

With 427 pound feet of torque on hand, the smallest of the G-Power line can bolt to 125 miles per hour in around 12.7 seconds on its way to a top end of 205 mph. The company threw in a set of carbon ceramic brakes to help bring the wicked 1 Series down from speed, which also helped reduce unsprung weight by half. Further weight reductions come in the form of a carbon fiber hood and trunk lid. G-Power plans to build just 30 examples of its wild little 1 Series M Coupe, so if you want one, you better get on the phone now. Head over to the G-Power site fore more information.
600-hp G-Power 1 Series is excessively cool originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 16:02:00 EST.
Let's face it, the dealership experience when buying a new car is not very special. But when you're handing over serious stacks of cash for a car that you've dreamed of owning, the occasion calls for something more than a free car wash before you drive off the lot. That's where something like the European Delivery program offered by BMW comes in. Instead of picking up your new M3 at the local dealer, BMW builds it in Munich and has it waiting for you to come get it. And while you're there, why not tour the factory where your car was built, visit the BMW Museum and world headquarters, and then go off on your own and explore what Germany has to offer a new BMW owner. And did we mention you actually save money by taking possession of your BMW this way?

Taking an international pilgrimage to pick up your new car is an experience that easily makes The List, so we sent Jessi and Patrick to Germany to walk us through what it's like for a new owner who goes this route, including the special treatment and various places one gets to go during the visit to BMW's campus in Munich.

The experience also afforded Jessi and Patrick the opportunity to complete a couple of other items on The List that could only be done in Germany. Can you guess which two they chose?
Few cars stir up the rumormill quite like the next BMW M3. To that end, BMW fan-site BimmerPost was able to track down a source, apparently tied to the development of the next M3 (and M4), who divulged a few juicy bits on power, weight and timing.

Horsepower in the F80 M3 and F82 M4 is said to be close to that of the E90/E92, which was rated at 414 hp. This contrasts with previous reports that had horsepower pegged closer to 450. It should also be noted that BMW has been known to underrate the horsepower values for its engines. That said, the new turbocharged straight-six will supposedly develop 100 more pound-feet of torque over the current generation, too. The 4.0-liter S65 V8 found in the E90/E92 M3 developed 295 lb-ft, putting the new engine's torque in the 395 lb-ft neighborhood. We can live with that.

An equally interesting development regards the proposed weight of the new Ultimate Driving Machine. Apparently BMW is targeting the curb weight of the E46 M3. That older-generation Bimmer clocked in at about 3,400 pounds, while the E90/E92 M3 had grown to over 3,700 pounds. The 300-pound weight savings should come as welcome news to M3 purists, critical of the progressive weight gains from generation to generation.

For those interested in the aesthetic of the next performance-Bimmer, the F80/F82 update of the M3 is claimed to feature a more aggressive look, highlighted by a power bulge hood and larger fenders. That styling direction should not come as much of a surprise, as the more aggressive appearance is customary to the M3 by now and matches what we've seen in spy shots.

According to source, the F80 M3 sedan will debut first and come to market in early 2014. It will be followed by the M4 coupe, though exact timing was not revealed.
Next M3 may be lighter than expected, with lots more torque originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 10:44:00 EST.
Augusto Farfus isn't even 30 years old yet, but he already has a certain commanding precision on many of the world's greatest racetracks, including Germany's famed Nürburgring. In the latest installment of the "Scare Your Wife At The Track" internet video meme, the BMW DTM driver takes his wife, Liri, for a high-speed tour of the Nürburgring in a BMW M3 Coupe.

When Liri agreed to hop in the passenger seat for a hot lap with her husband, we have a feeling the two had different meanings of "slow" and "exciting" driving. While most of us would have a hard enough time just staying on the challenging track, Farfus tackles the Green Hell while explaining elements of the track and dealing with his wife screaming in fear for most of the nearly 10-minute video. At one point (around the 5:02 mark) it looks as if Mrs. Farfus even starts to pass out a little just before saying that she's going to be sick, but she still handles the ordeal better than the respective wives of Riccardo Patrese and João Barbosa, the reigning queens of the Scare Your Wife meme.

Farfus, who we learn early in the video has a nickname of "Ninho" from his wife, is having fun the entire video commenting on a classic Mercedes-Benz as they blow past it, an Audi driver who Farfus comments "probably thinks he knows the track" as they pass it in a turn and numerous other cars and motorcycles.

Check out the video below to see whether or not Ninho will end up in the dog house for his antics.
Continue reading Today's 'Race Car Driver Freaking Out His Wife On A Track' is BMW's Augusto Farfus

Today's 'Race Car Driver Freaking Out His Wife On A Track' is BMW's Augusto Farfus originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 12:46:00 EST.
We've just received a set of spy photography that, for once, is focused on what is inside the car rather than what is visible on the exterior. That's exciting stuff, as the car in question is the next-generation BMW M3, and the engine in question is the stuff of great import where enthusiast drivers and Bimmerphiles are concerned.

The most important fact revealed from these shots, is that the 2014 M3 will be rocking an inline-six engine in place of the high-revving V8 from the current car. That news is welcome on two fronts: it represents a return to the engine configuration that we most associate with BMW performance, and it suggests a further development of the six-pot we've come to love in so many of the brand's current models.

The photos confirm that the engine is likely two have turbochargers at least (there are two pipes feeding the intercooler), and they do not contravene rumors that a third, electric turbo lies just out of sight.

Displacement figures for the engine still remain a bit of a mystery. It has been reported that the next M3 could be as voluminous as 3.3 liters, though it's more likely, based on a BMW tech report claiming use of optimized, 500cc-cylinders, that the total size is 3.0 liters. In any event, everyone's best guess about power output hovers around the 450-horsepower mark.

Please also note the very sturdy strut tower bracing that is visible under the hood (as if you could miss it). Forego any worries that the new hot 3 Series will be anything less than rock-solid mid-corner.

When you're finished browsing our photo gallery, please to continue on below, where we've posted some video footage of the 2014 M3 testing in Germany. Engine pics go better with engine sounds, no? Scroll down to check 'em out.
Continue reading 2014 BMW M3 engine revealed [w/video]

2014 BMW M3 engine revealed [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 16:15:00 EST.
BMW isn't saying exactly why it put the M3 GT2 Art Car done by Jeff Koons atop Norway's 640-meter-high (2,112 feet) Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), but it did. There's said to be some connection to Edvald Munch's painting The Scream, but things are a bit fuzzy there (and Koons is American), and does there really need to be a reason anyway?

The racing coupe was on display in London during the Olympics, where BMW was the transport sponsor, so we suppose this is one way to top the quadrennial spectacle. While it would have been much simpler and far cheaper to drag out the green screen and video workstation, or Photoshop, or a matte painter, that's not the BMW way. So the real car was driven to a landing zone and a helicopter hauled the M3 to the top of the rock, where we suppose it can now stop pining for the fjords.

There's a video below with the action, and another here that the owner won't let us embed.
Continue reading Watch BMW drop a priceless Art Car onto a cliff

Watch BMW drop a priceless Art Car onto a cliff originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 12:46:00 EST.
The $71,890 BMW M3 Lime Rock Park Edition has had sounds added to the sight of it with a terribly short promo video. Shot at the Lime Rock track of its inspiration with cameos by Skip Barber and Bill Auberlen of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, it's all quick cuts and a bellowing exhaust.

The Fire Orange coupe holds pat on power but gets hi-po parts from the M division catalog, like the M3 Competition Package and carbon fiber roof, to do more with the power it does has. You can watch 19 seconds of it in the video below.
Continue reading BMW M3 Lime Rock Park Edition gets the fast-cut treatment

BMW M3 Lime Rock Park Edition gets the fast-cut treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Aug 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Warning: This is not going to end well.

What you're about to see is a young man driving a very fast car - an E46 BMW M3, it appears - down a deserted road in the desert. We can't say for certain where it took place, but it looks a lot like Arizona. There are just enough elevation changes to make the road a bit challenging for the inexperienced.

Judging from the result of this boy's escapades, inexperienced pretty much sums it up. There's a blind corner, a road that drops away before a sweeping left turn and way too much speed. And then there's an airbag. Fortunately, it seems the driver walked away without serious injuries. The car, on the other hand, didn't fare nearly as well.

Hey, look, more spy shots of the 2014 BMW M3! Our shooters caught this one lapping the Nürburgring, but alas, there isn't much more to see here than in our last set.

To recap: The next-gen M3 will debut in concept form at next spring's Geneva show. BMW will initially offer it just as a sedan, but additional variants will be headed our way in subsequent model years. Power is expected to come from a turbocharged inline six with upwards of 400 horses, though BMW may try and get away with nixing the manual tranny in favor of a seven-speed dual-clutch unit.

We expect the new M3 to go on sale late next year as a 2014 model.
Next BMW M3 sheds more camo, runs the 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Six months, 26 days. That's the countdown until we get our first live, in-person look at the next iteration of the BMW M3, according to AutoWeek.

The F80 M3 will be appear on the BMW stand at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in "lightly veiled concept" form, according to the report, with the production car bowing at the Frankfurt show next fall. The performance sedan won't go on sale until the end of 2013 here in the U.S., with coupe and convertible versions and one of BMW's odd Gran Coupe models following in later years.

AutoWeek says the M3 will be a mix of steel with some aluminum body panels, powered by a turbocharged inline-six making about 450 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Although rumors of a 3.3-liter V6 based on BMW's larger V8 engine persist, the more shocking speculation involves the gearbox, which is said to be a dual-clutch with seven speeds. That's right, no manual transmission will be offered, according to the report.

Of course, BMW has attempted to make that move before with the M5. Fortunately, enough complaints from American customers caused the company to change its mind. So, car guy purists, start your grousing now, as the clock is already ticking.
BMW bringing M3 'concept' to Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 14:14:00 EST.
