As BMW prepares to introduce the all-new 2 Series coupe and convertible, the 1 Series name definitely won't be going away. We know new sedan and hatchback models are in the works; including the GT shown above. According to Car and Driver, though, the future of the 1 Series nameplate in the US could be dependent on rival premium small cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and Audi A3.

In an interview with C/D, BMW's North American head of product planning and strategy, Paul Ferraiolo, said that pricing might be the biggest deterrent to offering the third-gen 1 Series in the US. As he points out, BMW currently prices the 1 not too far from the 3 Series, but Mercedes-Benz and Audi will have their new small cars priced well below the $30,000 mark. BMW's Mini brand will also factor into the consideration since the 1 GT will share its underpinnings with the next-gen Cooper lineup.
BMW may keep next 1 Series out of the US originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 May 2013 17:46:00 EST.

The last time Audi gifted the world with a small sport sedan was way back when the A4 wasn't an entry-luxury executive car costing relative gads of dough, so maybe since the mid-1990s. In a company decision reversal, we're now officially getting the new A3 Sportback starting later this year, but that's a five-door hatch and not a big volume attraction for markets like the United States. And there's no guarantee we'll get the S3 Sportback version yet. So, what to do?

An S3 sedan is what. Audi was nice enough to usher us in to a private audience with this hotly awaited model in a westside Manhattan pier warehouse prior to the official unveil at the New York Auto Show tomorrow. Here is just a knee-jerk reaction to lead off... She do look damned fine, kids. (We'll have live images to share soon, so keep an eye on this post later.)

This heartier version of the new smaller notchback sedan from Ingolstadt is set to launch in western Europe as of December this year (after the A3 sedan in September), and US deliveries will begin during summer 2014. Talking with Audi experts at this little get-together and shoving some numbers around, the (technically speaking) 2015 Audi S3 sedan should start at right near $39,000. US S3 sedans come standard with a sunroof, 18-inch wheels, full leather, Sirius satellite radio, the three-spoke sport steering wheel with shift paddles for the also-standard six-speed S-tronic, and fully automated adjustable sport seats. Unfortunately, no six-speed manual shifting will be offered.
Continue reading Audi S3 Sedan boasts SAE 296 hp, 0-60 in 4.7 seconds

Audi S3 Sedan boasts SAE 296 hp, 0-60 in 4.7 seconds originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 18:00:00 EST.
Audi is bringing some excitement to this year's New York Auto Show, showing off a 2014 A3 Sedan that will shortly be vying for attention in the luxury market's newly hot compact segment. The newly minted A3 faces immediate challenge from box-fresh small premium sedans like the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Acura ILX, as well as players like the Buick Verano and the Lexus CT200h.

Of course, the German automaker will be the first to tell you that this new A3 is more than up to the challenge. Audi's typically high-level of design is in effect here, with sheet metal that is attractive without looking like a clone of the larger A4. The A3 will have the option of full LED headlamps, of course, carrying on Audi's now famous positioning in the world of recognizable lighting. Wheels will range from 16-inches to 18-inches, we're told, which will also help to cement the sporty look and premium placement of the small sedan.

The A3 Sedan will be vying for attention in the luxury market's newly hot compact segment.

Inside, the A3 now offers a driver information display that uses 3D graphics, a revised MMI system (still operable via a column-mounted knob or steering wheel controls), the choice of three different steering wheels (depending on function), optional sport seating and a whole lot more. Interior colorways fall into the black, brown, gray or beige variety, and two-tone packages are also in the mix. Cloth seats, two kinds of leather and Alacantara all find themselves among the options, as well.

The A3 will launch in Europe before it comes Stateside, and will offer a three-engine lineup when it does. All three mills are of the four-cylinder variety, with a 2.0-liter TDI offering 150-horsepower and 236-pound-feet of torque, a 1.4-liter, 140-hp and 184-lb-ft TFSI, and a 1.8-liter, 180-hp and 184-lf-ft TFSI. The diesel motor is expected to return roughly 57 miles per gallon on the combined European cycle, the 1.4 and 1.8 engines will offer 50 mpg and 42 mpg, respectively. 0-62 mile per hour times will range from 7.3 seconds for the 1.8 TFSI, to 8.7 for the TDI. As of this writing, the expected powertrain lineup for North America is still unknown.

European customers will have their choice of either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed S tronic dual clutch setup, though we're told that there will be no manual option for US customers. We'll follow up when we know if that's forever, or just at launch. In the meantime, have a full look at our gallery of A3 images and take a moment to scan the official Audi press release, below.

UPDATE: We were able to confirm a few more facts with Audi representatives this evening. The A3 engines that will be headed to the US are the 2.0-liter TDI, 1.8-liter TFSI and the 2.0-liter TFSI. It was also reiterated that the car will make its "official" world debut at the Shanghai Motor Show next month, and will not be on sale in this country until the 2015 model year.

For the first time, Audi will offer a proper four-door version of its compact A3 in the United States. And while we'll be getting a sneak peek at the new sedan as part of this month's New York Auto Show festivities, Audi sources have confirmed to Autoblog that the car will officially make its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show in April.

As we reported in our first drive of the European-spec A3, the US model will be offered in both four- and five-door trims, powered by both gasoline and diesel powerplants. On the gas front, a new 1.8-liter turbo-four will be found underhood, as will a massaged version of the 2.0-liter forced-induction four we all know and love. The diesel engine will be the same 2.0-liter TDI four that we currently enjoy in the A3.

Stay tuned for official details and images later this month.
Audi A3 Sedan to debut in Shanghai... technically originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Mar 2013 17:45:00 EST.
Audi is exploring a variety of sustainable transportation technologies beyond the traditional diesel, hybrid, plug-in and electric options, including the compressed natural gas A3 Sportback G-Tron that debuted today at the Geneva Motor Show.

The most interesting thing about this rather innocuous-looking A3 Sportback is that when run on Audi e-gas, the car becomes completely carbon neutral, emitting no more CO2 than was chemically input in this special fuel's production. Audi has already broken ground on a new plant - powered by renewable energy, of course - that uses electrolysis to produce e-gas, which could then be made available through any natural gas distribution network.

A turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine burns the e-gas, or any garden variety CNG, for 110 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, but the real story lies in the machine's natural gas tanks. The two light-weight composite vessels weigh in at just under 60 pounds each and can store a shave over 30 pounds of fuel combined and 2,900 psi. The tanks are made from a four-layer composite comprised of a gas-impermeable polyamide polymer, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, glass fiber reinforced polymer and a high-strength epoxy resin.

The A3 Sportback G-Tron also features a new gas regulator to keep the fuel at the correct pressure for any given engine speed. If the tank pressure falls below 145 psi, the engine automatically and seamlessly switches over to gasoline operation. With its two on-board fuel sources, the five-door offers a bladder-busting range of approximately 807 miles.

Continue reading Audi A3 G-Tron offers big range, few emissions

Audi A3 G-Tron offers big range, few emissions originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 17:29:00 EST.
Audi officially unveiled the A3 Sportback E-Tron at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. While not a production model, the plug-in hybrid gives us a good glimpse at what the German automaker has in store for future products. The five-door gets around thanks to parallel hybrid drivetrain comprised of a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a small electric motor integrated into the vehicle's six-speed dual-clutch transmission. While the four-cylinder churns up 150 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, the motor contributes 100 horsepower and 242 lb-ft of twist. All told, the design allows the E-Tron to serve up its full power from just 1,750 rpm.

An 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery sits under the floor beneath the rear seat, complete with a liquid cooling system designed to keep the pack in its optimum temperature range. The A3 Sportback E-Tron can be charged in as little as 2.5 hours with a 3.6-kW charger, yielding an EV range of up to 31 miles. The machine can also travel using the electric motor, ICE or a combination of the two for a total range of 584 miles. Check out the full press release below.
Continue reading Audi A3 E-Tron is a look at battery-operated things to come

Audi A3 E-Tron is a look at battery-operated things to come originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 16:22:00 EST.
By this time next year, the Audi A3 Sportback will be offered with a variety fuel-efficient powertrains ranging from diesel to the all-electric E-Tron, but perhaps the most interesting is the all-new G-Tron model, which uses Audi's innovative carbon-natural compressed natural gas called e-gas. Previously called A3 TCNG, we first heard about this technology last year, but now Audi has confirmed that this low-emission, sustainable-fuel will debut by the end of this year on the A3 Sportback G-Tron.

To create this e-gas, a plant in Werlte, Germany uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. As hydrogen fuel cell vehicles become more popular, Audi says that this process could also be used to produce hydrogen fuel, but to create CNG, it mixes the hydrogen with carbon dioxide to create "synthetic methane." Since it is identical to the CNG available today, Audi's e-gas can be shipped and stored using the existing CNG infrastructure. Making the whole process even greener, Audi obtains the CO2 for this process from a nearby biogas plant, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

Differentiated from the regular versions of the A3, the G-Tron features a pair of tanks under the rear cargo floor holding 15.43 pounds of CNG, which can power the car for almost 250 miles. What's more, the A3's conventional gasoline tank is still in place, giving the car an addition 560 miles of range. In total, that means the A3 G-Tron has a driving range of more than 800 miles. To run on both CNG and gas, Audi made changes to the car's 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine (including the turbo, cylinder head and fuel injection system) and catalytic converter.

It isn't clear how many G-Tron models Audi is planning to build, but the press release posted below says that its e-gas plant can provide enough fuel for 1,500 cars to travel about 9,300 miles (15,000 kilometers) per year.
Continue reading Audi unveils A3 Sportback G-Tron with bi-fuel power, 808-mile range

Audi unveils A3 Sportback G-Tron with bi-fuel power, 808-mile range originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Mar 2013 13:31:00 EST.
Not content to let Volkswagen have all of the fun with its GTI and Golf R, Audi is rebooting its five-door S3 Sportback with rather monstrous power. Headed for an official unveil at this year's Geneva Motor Show, the new S3 rolls out with a 300-horsepower, 280-pound-feet of torque turbocharged 2.0-liter TFSI engine under the hood. The four-cylinder powerplant is strong enough to shove the Sportback to 62 miles per hour in just 5.0 seconds when connected to the optional S-Tronic gearbox, or 5.5 seconds with the traditional manual transmission. Top speed is said to be an electronically governed 155 mph. Almost as impressive as those performance figures are the fuel economy ratings: the S- S3 is said to average 34 miles per gallon.

All S3 Sportback models offer Quattro all-wheel drive, ride on a sport-tuned suspension tuned to a lower ride height (about one inch) versus the standard Audi A3. 18-inch wheels with 225-section tires are standard equipment, and 13.39-inch front brakes should offer serious stopping ability.

Audi has done a lot of work shedding pounds from this latest MQB-architecture S3, as well. The car has a curb weight of roughly 3,186 pounds, or some 154 pounds less than the outgoing model. 11 of those pounds were cut via weight-saving measures in the 2.0-liter engine.

The last generation S3 was never shipped to the US for sale, and Audi has given us no indication thus far that this one will be. We'll expect to pin down a firm answer to that when we see the S3 Sportback roll onto stage at in Geneva.
Continue reading 300-HP 2013 Audi S3 Sportback unwrapped

300-HP 2013 Audi S3 Sportback unwrapped originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Feb 2013 10:16:00 EST.
As the Audi A3 sedan gets closer to its debut, Audi has camouflaged prototypes to take it on the streets for final testing. Last time we saw the A3, it was testing almost in the buff, but it was on a closed track so our spy shooters were kept at quite a distance.

Now that the newest Audi sedan is testing on public roads, our latest batch of spy shots gives us a more detailed look at the entry-level luxury player despite the swirly camo. Except for the oversized wheels and the fancy exhaust outlets and door mirrors, the production version of the car should look almost identical to the A3 sedan concept we saw in Geneva a couple years ago. Some of the details we can see include a good-sized panoramic roof that stretches almost halfway into the rear passenger space and signature Audi LED-accented headlights and taillights.
US-bound Audi A3 Sedan spied testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 17:45:00 EST.
It was just nine months ago that Strategic Vision announced its 2011 Total Value Awards, but you don't have to wait until next year for the 2012 awards. The Volkswagen Group keeps its lead as the number one brand, with seven products taking top category spots: Golf, Jetta Wagon, CC, Eos and Audi A3 Wagon, Q5 and Q7. Strategic Vision says "true innovation" - "rich and impactful, intuitive, motivational, in-depth and is able to trigger description by the user in great specificity" - is the open secret of the brands with the strongest showings. Results are culled from 77,153 owners covering more than 350 new cars bought between September of 2011 and 2012 ranked in the Total Value Index (TVI).

Other notable winners are Hyundai-Kia following VW in the brand category and having the Hyundai Elantra and Kia Sorento among category winners, the BMW Z4 taking the premium roadster category and the highest overall score of any vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt continuing to gather silverware in the Special Category, nabbing the second-highest score of all and representative of "nearly perfect innovation," and Chrysler and Dodge being most improved.

The (final) final decision on whether or not we will get the second-generation Audi A3 Sportback in the US has yet to be handed down by the juries in Ingolstadt and Herndon (Virginia, corporate seat for Audi USA). But that doesn't mean we can't head to the roads of the Monte Carlo Rally in this car's most powerful and accoutered trim three months before European customers take deliveries in late February. Our ride for the day? The A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI Quattro S-line with the beefy six-speed S-tronic, a car good for 181 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque between 1,750 and 3,000 rpm. If it came available in the US, we anticipate pricing would begin around $34,500 for this topmost trim.

When we get a shot to drive on these utterly spectacular roads, the assumption would be that our Audi of choice would be an RS trim with a chassis set up for our usual abuses. Such was not the case this time, however, as our tester did not even benefit from the optional Audi Magnetic Ride dampers that are now available on the A3. Audi Drive Select is standard at this engine and trim level (we had the European "Ambition" trim, which equates roughly to Premium Plus in the States), and this does provide for the recalibration of several dynamic bits between Efficiency, Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual modes. With the six-speed S-tronic gearbox, ADS takes care of shift responses, as well.

Although this A3 Sportback was not like an RS3 by a longshot on our route, we simply toned down our rate to match what might be the driving attitude of a typical owner. Taken as such, this top tune of the 2.0 TDI engine, plus all of our model's premium touches inside, made for a thoroughly satisfying experience on roads any enthusiast would never want to leave. Conditions were ideal, as there was literally zero traffic to disturb our exploration of this latest Sportback.
Continue reading 2014 Audi A3 Sportback

2014 Audi A3 Sportback originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 11:57:00 EST.
It's been almost two years since we first saw the Audi A3 Sedan Concept under the lights of the Geneva Motor Show, but it looks like we won't have to wait much longer to see this small Audi four-door on the open road. Our spy shooters have caught Audi testing the sedan version of the next-generation A3 that is expected to go on sale in the US later next year.

From what we can tell from this test mule, Audi has kept the overall styling of the A3 Sedan very similar to the 2011 concept car. The long-lensed shots don't give us too much detail of the car's body or any interior shots, but we do see that the concept's roofline and side window shape carries over almost identically. As expected, the massive carbon fiber and aluminum wheels have been replaced with more appropriately sized wheels, and the door mirrors are befitting a production car. The concept had a four-passenger seating layout, but we would be surprised if this configuration makes it to production.

No definitive word on what will power the next A3, but don't hold your breath for the same five-cylinder used on the A3 Sedan Concept. With a stated 408 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, this engine's output seems rather high even for a next-gen RS3.
Audi A3 sedan caught nearly naked originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Nov 2012 14:30:00 EST.
Audi has revealed its 2013 A3 Sportback in Munich ahead of the model's official debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show later this week, and Autoblog was on hand for the early unveiling. Like its three-door cousin, the third-generation five-door wears subtly evolved styling inside and out as well as a longer wheelbase, more interior room and a commendable weight savings of around 198 pounds over its predecessor. This particular model wears the line's optional LED headlamps and features a bi-fuel powertrain as part of the Audi e-Gas project. The exercise uses electrolysis to generate hydrogen, which is then combined with carbon dioxide to create methane, or natural gas. The result is what Audi is calling a "carbon-neutral" fuel.

Since compressed natural gas stations can be few and far between, however, the A3 also makes use of a 13-gallon gasoline tank to help give the machine an effective range of around 745 miles. The 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine features injectors for both natural gas and gasoline and can seamlessly switch between the two fuels while driving. After perusing our high-res image gallery, you can take a look at the full press release on the 2013 Audi A3 Sportback below.
Continue reading 2013 Audi A3 Sportback e-Gas Project shows off carbon-neutral fuel

2013 Audi A3 Sportback e-Gas Project shows off carbon-neutral fuel originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 15:44:00 EST.
The most innovative part of the Audi A3 E-Tron prototype isn't found under the hood or in its battery compartment. Instead, one must sit in the driver's seat and move slightly to the side, then peer at the two smallish steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

On traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, a quick tug on the left paddle shifts the transmission down one gear while the right is used for shifting the gearbox up. However, nearly all battery-electric vehicles (BEV) have but a single-speed transmission. Paddle shifters are completely unnecessary. The engineers at Audi, likely not wanting to leave gaping holes on the back of the trick sporty steering wheel, gave the two plastic flaps a new role - to control the intensiveness of regenerative braking.

The five-door version of the Audi A3, the A3 Sportback, has been revealed, and as with its three-door sibling, it won't be coming to the U.S. We Americans can look forward to our own sedan version of the same car. The third-generation A3 is only a smidge larger dimensionally than the outgoing Sportback, but has dropped up to 198 pounds compared to the previous hatch thanks to increased use of high- and ultra-strength steel and aluminum parts like the hood and fenders. With the 1.4-liter TFSI engine it weighs just 2,657 pounds. The biggest measurement growth is in the wheelbase: the front axle has been moved forward 1.57 inches and the wheelbase overall has grown by 2.28 inches.

All that extra space gets passengers more head- and legroom, and extra cubic feet for loot. The rear area can hold 13.42 cubic feet of goods with the rear seats up, expanding more than threefold to 43.08 cubic feet with the seats folded down into a flat cargo floor.

The space under the hood will be filled with one of three engines at launch: a 1.6-liter TDI said to return almost 62 U.S. mpg, a 1.4-liter TFSI with 122 horsepower and 148 pound-feet, and a 1.8-liter TFSI with 180 hp and 184 lb-ft. Coming later will be a 1.2-liter TFSI with 105 hp and 129 lb-ft, a more powerful 1.4-liter TSFI with 140 hp and 184 lb-ft and cylinder deactivation, and two 2.0-liter TDIs, one with 150 hp and 236 pound-feet and another 2.0-liter TDI with 184 hp and 280 lb-ft. Also on the way next year are a TCNG engine powered by Audi's proprietary e-gas and an e-tron electric Sportback in 2014. Shifting for all of them is handled by a six-speed manual, with a six- or seven-speed S-tronic optional.

Those who can buy it will be able to choose from four trims: Attraction, Ambition and Ambiente, with the S line sport package available for the Ambition trim, and 13 colors plus a high-gloss exterior package. Check out the press release below for a heap of details, and the high-res gallery above.
Continue reading Audi debuts redesigned five-door A3 Sportback

Audi debuts redesigned five-door A3 Sportback originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 08:59:00 EST.

In 1996, the first Audi A3 essentially established the premium compact segment, but that distinction really only carried significance in Europe. Gradually, and especially in its two most recent generations, its corporate sibling, the Volkswagen Golf, has become something of a true premium hatch without the badge, leaving more and more people to wonder if there was a point to splurging for the costlier Audi. Then the new Mini Cooper came along to effectively steal the thunder in the new century's compact premium market. In the past few years, Audi's A3 lineup has been scrambling around in search of redefinition. It has continued selling in alright numbers in Europe (and it currently accounts for 20 percent of annual Audi sales worldwide), but officials acknowledge the car could do much better elsewhere.

The first two generations of the A3 - 1996 and then 2003 - were only offered in hatchback form. But now that Audi has its sights on expanding the range's appeal globally, when the U.S. begins taking delivery of the third generation in the autumn of 2013, there will be a new sedan bodystyle to accompany the five-door Sportback. That means a new A3 is still over a year away for us, but we couldn't wait to drive it, so we headed to the hatchback-loving Spanish island of Mallorca to sample it for you.

2013 Audi A3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 May 2012 11:57:00 EST.
The engorged dimensions of the BMW 3 Series have been a source of enthusiasts' ire for years now. The 3er's growth isn't all that shy, especially of late: the sedan is 10.6 inches longer and 8.3 inches wider than it was in 1975, or for a more modern perspective, the brand new 3 Series is 6.5 inches longer than it was in 2002. It took 27 years to gain 4.1 inches, but only 10 years to stretch another 6.5. To address the size and heft, a report in Autocar says BMW is planning a rear-wheel-drive 1 Series sedan to be "the spiritual successor to the E30-generation 3 Series four-door."

Talk of 1 Series models being spiritual successors to 3 Series models isn't new - part of the clamor around the 1 Series M was that it channeled the light flickability of the first M3s. A 1 Series sedan would serve three purposes: get a light, small, RWD model back in the lineup, give the company a clear competitor to the upcoming Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA, and help BMW get closer to its sales target of two million cars in 2020.

The sedan would sit on a derivative of the platform used in the current 3 Series, and be different from the front-wheel-drive platform underpinning the forthcoming 1 Series GT. Four- and six-cylinder engines and BMWs xDrive AWD system are in the planning mix, as is an electric version. Autocar says 2015 is a potential sale date for the sedan, which would put it one year after the next-generation coupe and convertible officially bow.
BMW 1 Series sedan detailed originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 17:30:00 EST.
We just attended a thorough workshop covering the tech inside the next Audi A3, the new compact from Ingolstadt that the U.S. gets in October 2013 as a five-door Sportback model, as well as a new four-door small sedan. A concept version of the four-door was shown at the Geneva Motor Show last year, while deliveries of this European hatchback start this July.

Our first drive of the three-door premium hatchback model that will be available at launch happens later this month, though it's sort of a shame we won't be getting this three-door here in the States. The five-door Sportback model that will be sold in the U.S. will be shown this October at the Paris Motor Show and will be available in Western European in January of next year. The premium hatch segment is fillling up fast now with this Audi, then the Volvo V40, to be followed then by the all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
Continue reading New details on the next Audi A3

New details on the next Audi A3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 May 2012 12:43:00 EST.
While we adore sexy three-door hatchbacks in the same way that our lungs crave oxygen, our fellow countrymen don't quite seem to feel the same way. Three-doors simply don't sell in America, and that's exactly why the delicious 2013 Audi A3 Wagon isn't headed to the states, according to The Detroit Bureau.

Instead, American buyers can look forward to a market-specific sedan version that Johan de Nysschen, CEO of Audi of America, says won't share so much as a single body panel with the longroof you see above. While that's a crying shame by our eyes, de Nysschen says the U.S.-spec 2013 Audi A3 will likely be successful enough to boost model sales to 30,000 per year.
The A3 Sedan is expected to bow with a more upscale, refined interior and more passenger volume as well. We wouldn't be surprised to see an abundance of available technology options as well. The Detroit Bureau says the new model may even bow with the same touch pad control system found on the Audi A8 and a larger LCD screen mounted in the dash.
U.S. not getting new A3 Wagon, separate sedan being developed originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 13:01:00 EST.
Although the 2013 A3 made its unofficial Internet appearance a couple of weeks ago, we're now seeing the fruits of Audi's labor for the first time here at Geneva Motor Show. With 42 models in its lineup, the Ingolstadt brand didn't want its stalwart and next-smallest car to get lost in the traffic, so it's thrown quite a bit of goodness into the mix.

The overall size is just about the same, but the wheelbase and interior dimensions have grown. Even so, the new A3 has lost weight to the tune of 176 pounds, meaning the 1.4 TFSI model weighs just 2,590 pounds. That 122-horsepower 1.4-liter engine will be one of three offered at launch, along with a 180-hp 1.8-liter TFSI and a 2.0-liter TDI with 150 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque, all driven through the front wheels. Quattro versions come later "for more powerful engines," as will alternative-fuel powerplants. Shifting will come in either five-speed manual or six-speed S-tronic forms.

Technological conveniences once found only in major-league sedans have made their way to the thick end, with the A3 offering adaptive cruise control, an evolution of park assist and a 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo.
