Last week, the local news team at FOX 2 Detroit broke this story about Chrysler employees caught drinking and smoking on their lunch break near the Trenton Engine Plant. Now, Chrysler has taken swift action against the nine employees caught on tape by FOX 2 – all have been suspended without pay, pending further investigation.

According to a statement from the mayor of Trenton, Michigan, Chrysler is planning to invest $114 million to partially reopen its Trenton North plant, creating 270 jobs in the process. This investment would bring 400,000 square feet of the two million-square-foot plant up and running again.

UAW local 372 in Trenton, MI voted to approve a tentative agreement with Chrysler that would change the way things are run at the Trenton engine plant (shown). Significant changes reported by The Car Connection include new work rules, big reductions in job classifications and changes to how work time is counted that will lead to fewer overtime hours.

Chrysler is one step closer to a new state-of-the-art plant. Employees at its Trenton Engine Plant in Michigan overwhelmingly approved provisions over the weekend that will help the automaker make a case for a new "Phoenix" V6 engine plant at the same location.
