We drove them back-to-back and picked our favorites

We had both a XF Sportbrake S and a V90 T6 AWD R-Design come through the office recently, and since they're really close competitors – both fairly large wagons, both luxury vehicles, both have sporting pretenses, and both feature all-wheel-drive. And in the case of our test cars, they're equipped very similarly. They do get to that price in different ways, though.

The 2019 Volvo XC40 is the entry-level crossover for the Swedish automaker. It takes the same basic formula that's worked well for the XC90 and XC60 and distills it into a smaller, cuter and less expensive package. Like the competition from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and more, the XC40 sells as much on style as it does on practicality or drivability.
