Recharge Wrap-up: new Formula E App, gas tax acceptance study

DOE, EPA Publish 2016 Fuel Economy Guide

A new study shows possible ways to get drivers to support a raise in the gas tax. Online surveys conducted by sociologists at Michigan State University found that people would be more likely to support a tax hike if they were told it would be spent on energy efficient transportation, infrastructure repair not covered by current taxes, or refunded equally to citizens rather than put in the US Treasury's General Fund. What didn't work was telling drivers what other countries pay for gas. The researchers say, "for people to take action against a threat, it is not sufficient that they believe that the threat is severe and that they are susceptible to its consequences. They also must believe that there are practical ways of protecting themselves against the threat." Read more from Grist.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have published the 2016 Fuel Economy Guide. The guide provides, of course, fuel economy ratings for 2016 model year light duty vehicles, as well as projected fuel costs and emissions figures. Additionally, the guide offers "best-in-class" lists to provide a quick way to compare similar vehicles. The guide rates the Chevrolet Spark EV as the most efficient electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt as the most efficient plug-in hybrid, and the Toyota Prius C as the most efficient non-plug-in vehicle. Download the guide, or read more from the DOE.
