R1234yf, the refrigerant jointly developed by Honeywell and Dupont that is being phased in as a replacement for R134a in Europe, is safe. So says a panel of scientists from the Joint Research Council, researching the refrigerant at the request of the European Commission. German automaker Daimler, though, disagrees with the finding, saying R1234yf can be ...
If you thought competition among the German luxury automakers was hot before, it looks like things are just getting started. For the first two months of the year, Audi has sold more cars than BMW worldwide by just 383 cars. Audi claims to have sold 242,400 vehicles through February, up 9.3 percent from last year, compared to 242,017 units from BMW, up ...
Ladders. As children, we learn how important they are: even if you don't know who Jacob was or where he was climbing, you know how to make his ladder from string. If you don't want to be cursed, you know not to walk under them; and if you want to win the game, you know you need to avoid the chutes and climb the ladders. As adults, ladders take on more ...
Just days after we caught the first glimpse of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG doing cold weather testing, here are some fresh images of its high-performance wagon sibling getting a workout. It has been a while since we've spotted Mercedes testing the C-Class T, but it's clear Affalterbach's version is getting an extra dose of ...
With Mercedes-Benz bringing out coupe and plug-in hybrid versions of its S-Class sedan, the German automaker just may follow through with a battery-electric variant as well. That's what the company's Uwe Ernstberger told the folks at Top Gear during the Geneva Motor Show. And while he noted the company still needs to work in a larger-than-usual battery ...
Apple's CarPlay infotainment system hasn't made it into a single vehicle yet, and it's already drawing criticism for distracting drivers among safety advocates. The new tech unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show pairs users' iPhones with the car's dashboard display to make calls, dictate messages and listen to music. Some automakers, like Volvo, also let ...
To say the 2014 Geneva Motor Show was packed full of news is an understatement as big as the show's home at the Palexpo convention center. Despite everything that we were able to cover during this year's show, there's still more coming out of Switzerland, including the announcement of the finalists for the 2014 World Car of the Year Awards. We reported ...
Back in December, Mercedes-Benz announced a four-wheel-drive version of its endlessly charming Sprinter van (the European model is pictured above), but didn't make a mention of any plans for US market sales. Now, that's all changed, as the German automaker has confirmed that its Sprinter 4x4 will be available for US consumption, with the 2015 model ...
It's been 25 years since Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off its R129-series SL roadster at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. While it may look dated now, it was a revolutionary product in its day – a day that lasted a good eleven years. Compared to the R107 series it replaced, the R129 was a technological tour de force. Though the shape may appear boxy to ...
While the next Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has been rumored to get a new twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 with somewhere between 450 and 500 horsepower, the looks of the actual car have been a mystery – at least until now. Our spy shooters have caught Affalterbach's latest creation during cold-weather testing in Sweden, and it's surprisingly ...
Mercedes-Benz is largely known for two things, particularly in the United States: one is luxury automobiles, and the other – thanks largely to the proliferation of the Sprinter – is vans. The vehicle you see here combines both competences into one tidy package, debuting here at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. It's called the V-Class, and it ...
Mercedes-Benz might be going through a new design renaissance. With the S-Class Coupe, it has shown that it can simultaneously create a wonderful design that still looks unmistakably like a Mercedes. The coupe is receiving its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and it's just as handsome live as it was in press photos. It is a handsome combination of ...
Apple, maker of tech items like the iPhone, iPad and Mac line of computers, is extending its reach into the automotive market, making a fairly big announcement ahead of the Geneva Motor Show. No, it hasn't bought Tesla (yet). Instead, Apple has announced CarPlay, an all-new means of controlling an iPhone through your car. Now, this doesn't strike us as ...
Most of the Mercedes-Benz lineup is based on rear-drive architecture that would make for great racing platforms. That's how you end up with the C-Class in DTM and Superstars, the E-Class in V8 Supercars and the SLS AMG in GT3, to name just a few. But don't think that Benz's new front-drive platform won't make the transition to racing. Mercedes itself, ...
Russian medalists at the recently concluded Sochi Winter Olympics are being rewarded quite handsomely for their service to the Motherland. In addition to the $120,000 being handed out for each gold medal, the $76,000 being awarded for slivers and $52,000 given to bronze winners, now word has come out that each of Russia's medalists will be gifted a new ...
The testing program for the coupe internally codenamed C190 continues in the snow, but when it breaks out into the sunshine we'll know it as perhaps the Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG or GT AMG. Adorned in the same camo outfit as the last time we saw it in December, it could be out working the rumored all-wheel-drive system that will make it more amenable to ...
If you're in the market for a German sports coupe with a naturally aspirated V8, run, don't walk, to your nearest dealer because they are going to be gone very soon. European fuel economy and emissions rules have conspired to force automakers into seeking forced-induction mills. Motor Trend personality Jonny Lieberman is hosting the retirement party in ...
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has had its reveal under the bright lights of a few auto shows now, so we already know quite a bit about the German luxury brand's new volume seller. Mercedes dove into all-aluminum series production in 2010 with its SLS AMG, fashioning 20 bodies a day out of the lighter-than-steel metal, then graduated to 140 bodies a day ...
You've probably never heard of Béla Barényi, but you've almost certainly been impacted by him in some way, shape or form. The Austro-Hungarian engineer had a huge effect on the automotive industry, most notably during his 33-year tenure as the head of pre-development for Mercedes-Benz, where he helped revolutionize and popularize the idea of ...
We all knew that Mercedes-Benz couldn't afford to resist the small SUVover segment for much longer. After all, it seems to be the fastest-growing segment in the galaxy, and in particular, it's the premium niche of that class – led by the hugely successful Land Rover Evoque and BMW X1 – that is making these smaller vehicles more viable and ...
