UPDATE: As we feared, the CLA Shooting Brake is not currently slated for US availability. The text below has been adjusted accordingly. Of all the variants in Mercedes' smallest line, only one doesn't have a liftgate, and that's the CLA-Class. But don't worry, the German automaker is out to fix that too with the reveal of the new CLA Shooting Brake you ...
Lewis Hamilton had much to celebrate at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this past weekend. Not only did he win the race in commanding form (the 33rd in his career to make him the fifth most successful in Formula One history), but he also scored enough points (double on the season finale this year) to outpace his teammate and chief rival to win the ...
Mercedes-Benz officially revived the Maybach name as a sub-brand with the reveal of the luxed-up S600 at the LA Auto Show last week, but that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the German automaker's new plans for its uber-prestige marque. Motor Trend reports that Mercedes is planning two additional Maybach variants to launch in ...
The launch of the A45 AMG marked Mercedes-Benz's first real assault on the premium hot hatch segment. And with 355 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbo four, it is indeed hot. But the latest word has it that Mercedes-AMG is planning an even hotter version. Speaking with Auto Express at the LA Auto Show last week, AMG boss Tobias Moers indicated that his ...
Our life with the Mercedes-AMG GT has only just begun, and a full life it looks like it will be. The latest in preposterous two-doors from AMG is launching in GT and GT S flavors, but a few more branches of the family tree are already planned: a racing entry for the FIA GT3 championship is scheduled to appear in 2016, giving the current SLS AMG GT3 ...
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class just keeps growing – both in terms of dimensions and in terms of variants. Nevermind the S-Class Coupe for a moment and focus only on the sedan: in North America alone, you can get the big Benz in S550, S600, S63 and S65 spec, and at the Los Angeles Auto Show this year, Daimler has rolled out the new Maybach version as ...
Way back in June, Mercedes-Benz issued a light refresh of its svelte CLS-Class, adding one very notable new feature – MultiBeam LED headlamps. This new technology allows a camera to constantly adjust the output of the lamps, essentially letting driver to enjoy the power of full-beam headlights without blinding oncoming traffic. We aren't getting it ...
The Mercedes-Maybach S600 is a car made for a town like Los Angeles, which so thoroughly enjoys excess. We're not only discussing the new car's wildly opulent interior, which is arguably the nicest ever fitted to a car with a Silver Arrow on its nose, but its mechanicals. Mercedes-Benz's engineers have had as much of a field day with the greasy bits of ...
Automobiles don't come much harder-core than the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen, but AMG has proven up to the challenge time and time again. From the base G-Wagen, the boys in Affalterbach have tuned out successively more powerful versions, but surprised even themselves with the release of the G63 AMG 6x6 last year. The thing is, not everyone – ...
We should preface the above headline with this: we fully expected Mercedes-Benz to introduce a more luxurious S-Class sedan, complete with a longer wheelbase. We've seen plenty of spy photos of the stretched sedan, and it was frankly a matter of "when" rather than "if" the flagship's flagship would arrive. We simply weren't expecting the new model to be ...
There are ways to test armor plating. You test the components under laboratory conditions, install them on a vehicle, test them some more, maybe put in some dummies to make sure occupants would be safe from harm under real-world conditions. But the Texas Armoring Corporation and its CEO take a different approach. A few years ago, we brought you footage ...
At a Halloween party a couple of weeks ago, a rather inebriated new acquaintance of mine pulled a beautiful round flask out of his extravagant wolverine costume (the animal, not the X-Men character – I live in Ann Arbor) and offered me a pull. I wasn't driving, and I'm neither an asshole nor a fool, so I took a sip. The whiskey that poured out was ...
The image above might look like a fairly interesting painting of some old Mercedes-Benz grand prix cars getting, but in reality, it showcases far more than just paint on canvas. To celebrate this year's 80th anniversary of its Silver Arrows racecars, Mercedes commissioned some very talented digital artists to craft a series of 12 depictions of important ...
In many ways, we're living in a golden age of automotive performance. After all, it's possible to show up at a Dodge dealer, hand over about $60,000 and storm away with a 707-horsepower Challenger Hellcat. Or for those who prefer a touch more luxury, the BMW M4, Mercedes-AMG C63 and latest Cadillac ATS-V offer between 425 and 503 horsepower, depending on ...
Beginning in 2015, Mercedes-Benz is revising its nomenclature strategy for many of its models. This isn't shocking news, nor is it anything new in the industry – look at the recent Q-ification of Infiniti, or the forthcoming CT/XT strategy being deployed at Cadillac. But unlike those luxury brands, Mercedes isn't shaking up the whole system, and ...
Former Evo editor Harry Metcalfe lives a pretty fantastic life when it comes to automobiles. When he's not in England driving around in a 1954 Land Rover Series 1 or a recently purchased 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, he's in the south of France with his 1993 Mercedes-Benz SL600, which is the focus of his latest Harry's Garage video. It's hard to describe a ...
It's expected that Mercedes, like any automaker, aspires to be number one. But we've found a case where being at the top of the list is unlikely to be something of which Daimler is going to boast. That's because we're talking about the automaker most likely to cheat the European fuel economy tests. According to Transport And Environment, Mercedes is ...
We'll admit it, we're really looking forward to more time with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. Compared to other high-dollar luxury coupes – we're looking at you Bentley Continental GT – it's more stylish, easily more affordable, and since it's a Mercedes, lacks the sense of fragility that comes with a more exotic name plate. Auto Express ...
The custom vehicles at the SEMA Show tend to all be about speed and style, plus a few off-roaders thrown in for good measure, but Mercedes-Benz is taking advantage of the event this year to give its future midsize commercial van for the US a sneak preview. The Mercedes Metris goes on sale in the US and Canada sometime next fall, and much of the rest of ...
Episode #404 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week, Dan Roth, Chris Paukert and Brandon Turkus talk about the BMW i8 and i3, this week's SEMA show, the looming Ferrari spin-off and the passing of Tom Magliozzi, longtime co-host of NPR's Car Talk. We start with what's in the garage and finish up with some of your questions, and for those of you ...
