The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 4Matic SUV is a very pleasant luxury EV to pop around in, and while it isn’t particularly sporty to drive, it sure is a relaxing space to spend time in. The EQE SUV is a similar size and class as the gas-powered GLE, though its aerodynamic shape gives it a very different look. We love the interior styling and tech, but the price is an issue. That said, if you’re aiming for a luxury EV that stays under the radar, the EQE SUV is a good place to start.

ZAC PALMER: Hi there, everyone. I'm Zac Palmer with Autoblog, back for another episode of the Autoblog garage. And right behind me here is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 SUV 4Matic. That was a mouthful. But let's go ahead and unpack a little bit of what that means and take a look around this electric SUV.

Right up front, If you've seen a Mercedes EQ electric vehicle before, this is going to be very familiar to you. You have the super aerodynamic shape. Has a coefficient of drag of 0.25. That's all for the sake of range. So what you get is this very smooth face. You have the Mercedes EQ styling. So in here, you have a million little Mercedes three pointed stars within the grille and then a big 3 pointed star, just in case you didn't know it was a Mercedes quite yet.

Of course, there's the traditional three pointed star on the hood as well. As you go around, you get these super cool lights. I really, really like Mercedes design here. A lot of the design that you get from the front is the light. So you have these and then the full width DRL in front there. Now, as we move along to the side, I think the design gets a little more interesting over here.

We have some really great 21-inch wheels. You can go anywhere from 19 to 21 inches on this car. So these are the biggest wheels that you can get. I think they look fantastic. They really help the proportions of this car in general. Most of the EQ stuff, honestly, is a little jelly bean, almost like a pear.

They just-- it's a very boring shape. But this looks more like a traditional SUV. And I like that. It feels-- well, just more normal like a Mercedes-Benz GLE, which would be the gas equivalent to this car. Of course, you do have the windshield washer fill cap over here, just like all the other Mercedes EQ cars, little EQ badge up there.

You get some chrome window surrounds. And there is no roof rails up top here. Instead, you have a big, old panoramic roof. Moving all the way around to the side here, I will point out you do have the flush door handles. So those pop in and out when you go back.

But in the back, once again, a very rounded, simple, aero-focused design. You will also notice the helix lights back here. So that's to remind you of the filaments of a light bulb, of course, electric. And the LEDs run all the way across the back. You get your EQE 350 badge back here along with the 4Matic. There is a non-4Matic version of this car which is just the rear wheel drive. This one is all wheel drive with two electric motors.

And it's just very simple. There's not a lot going on back here. If you're a fan of simple design, this would probably appeal to you. But overall, very, very cohesive, consistent design. My favorite part of the back, though, is this little Mercedes badge back here that pops out when you open the hood. Also pops out, there's the rear view camera is hidden in there. So it doesn't get dirty when you drive around. It's just a nice little boom and up it goes.

So now that we looked at the outside, I've already popped the hatch here. How about we hop on in and see what the interior of this thing is like? And welcome inside the EQE 350 SUV. This is definitely my favorite place to be to look at this SUV because Mercedes interior design is beautiful.

I'm just going to start out by talking about the spec of this one. You have these beautiful cream seats with the brown contrast on the dash, the brown floor mats, the brown on the doors. You have this really nice contrast stitching. It's beautiful in here. There is no doubt about that at all. And it's all accentuated by this gorgeous dash.

Now, this car does not have the hyperscreen. So it does not have the full screen width all the way across the passenger side. It's just the central and then your big digital instrument cluster here. And I like that, actually. I like that more than the hyperscreen because you get this beautiful wood paneling back here. It's backed by all these Mercedes three pointed stars.

I could never ever get tired looking at this dash. It is very, very nice. And every-- every single detail, same, beautiful. You have these awesome sort of bronze, coppery accents for the vents. Really nice movement there. Everything is just really nice to touch, really nice to look at. It feels its price. It's expensive. And it feels it.

Your main control panel here is, of course, this giant screen. Pretty much everything is done through there. So you got a Home button. And that brings you to Mercedes zero touch layer infotainment system. I like the software a lot. It's easy to get places. However, there are a lot of menus. And it takes a while to learn.

If you don't like any of that stuff, you can, of course, just go to Apple CarPlay. And you can get your very traditional look stuff. There are no physical controls for the climate. Those are all done within the infotainment system. Same with the radio, you have a little volume slider here. If you like a lot of those physical touch controls, this might not be the car for you.

And those physical touch controls, they transfer on over to the steering wheel, where pretty much everything is also haptic and touch right here. You scroll up for the volume. You can scroll for your cruise control changes. Everything is very touch, very futuristic in here. And Mercedes has done that for a purpose.

As far as the utility of this thing goes, this is an SUV. People will use it for families. I really like how Mercedes has done this center console. So you have this sliding back and forth guy right here. So you can shut this if you want the nice flush look. Or you can open it up and you reveal your cup holders, storage, and a wireless phone charger in there. There are a couple of USB-C ports up here too if you want to plug in.

And then down below, you have a massive storage area down here with some nice high walls. So things won't fly around. Really dig that. And you have a super deep center console here. You see how far my arm goes in there. It's pretty large. And then, of course, even more cup holders and storage on the sides.

I really, really like this front seat. But you should hop in to the back because this is a fairly large SUV. Let's see what we got working back there. Welcome on into the back seat of the EQE SUV. Now, this isn't as large as the EQS SUV. But you can see from where I am, I'm 5' 10", I've got the seat where I want it. I've got an abundance of space between my knees and the seat in front of me. If I want to stretch out, there's a lot of room underneath the seat for my feet too.

Now, as far as convenience features back here, you look in the back here, you got some nice USB-C ports to plug into right there. Got some pretty nice pull straps right here for storage. And of course, an armrest if you want to rest back here. I really like this door design, same as the front. You got brown as well as white combo. And this really nice black paneling right here. Good metal to rest your arm on here.

Everything just feels nice back here. There's no cheapness, no big cutting costs or anything like that. It's a really nice place to be. And also a ton of headroom. Mercedes did not skimp there. So how about we hop into the trunk, though, and see what this hatch has to offer us?

So here we are at the hatch of the EQE. You just saw me open it with that fun little hatch pull right there with the Mercedes logo. Now in the back here, we have 14 cubic feet of space says Mercedes. It's pretty spacious. And it's not exactly square space. But it is a very tall space. Where you can stack things up if you so desire.

We've got this nice privacy shade back here. And if you really want, there's some more storage underneath here if you go ahead and pull the underfloor storage up, you can put a charge cord down here. Or you can put any number of small grocery bags that's relatively short. So this is a fairly utilitarian electric SUV back here.

It's not the largest, of course. This is a midsize. But this will still get it done if you've got a lot of stuff. So now that we've looked back here, how about we go chat a little bit about the powertrain and about how fun this thing is to drive and/or isn't? So if you guys were expecting me to pop the hood and show you guys, well, what's under here, I'm sorry, I cannot do that.

Mercedes-Benz does not allow the customer to pop the hood. Now, of course, you can if you break out some tools and you really want to get under there. But it's not the easiest thing in the world to do. All that said, this being the EQE 350 4Matic, it has 288 horsepower, 564 pound feet of torque from a pair of electric motors, one on the rear axle, one on the front.

It most of the time just uses the rear to help it. For efficiency reasons, it decouples the front axle. But no, that gives it enough oomph to actually feel pretty dang quick. 0 to 40, 0 to 50 on this car is pretty rapid, honestly, for what it is. Now, you can ramp it up to the EQE 500, get even more horsepower.

There's the EQE AMG with even more on top of that. However, as it is, this is a pretty nice balance between range and horsepower. This is around 280, 290 miles. And you can go even more than that, though. There's the EQE 350 Plus, which is just rear wheel drive, which gets you over the 300 mark.

However, this car is just a very sedate, normal, sort of e-class style driver. That means it's very plush and comfortable without feeling overtly sporty. Now, that said, the sportiest thing about this thing is the rear axle steering, which gives you up to 10 degrees of rear axle steering. Honestly, makes this thing feel like a Honda Civic when you're driving it around. It's so small, so, so compact when you're turning into places.

And that really helps it an agility wise as far as handling. And that, ladies and gentlemen, has been the EQE 350 SUV. Hope you liked the video. Go ahead and like, share, and subscribe. And make sure you comment down below and tell us what you think about this electric Mercedes Benz.
