Earlier this year, Volkswagen introduced an impressive 6-year/72,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, meaning that everything from cabin electronics to the engine and transmission were covered. But oddly, it was only available on the Tiguan and the Atlas. Now, VW has expanded the warranty from those two crossovers to the entire VW line. So now you can drop in and pick up anything from a GTI to a Passat and have over half a decade of worry-free driving.
This warranty is a big upgrade over Volkswagen's previous warranty, which was bumper-to-bumper only for 3 years or 36,000 miles. The 3-year/36,000-mile coverage is also used by Ford, Honda, Subaru, Toyota, General Motors, Mazda and Fiat-Chrysler. Those brands do include a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which still doesn't match VW.
The only companies that come close to Volkswagen's warranty are Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi. Each company has a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, which is lower than VW's, but they also come with 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties, meaning the engines and transmissions will be covered longer. Kia and Hyundai's warranty takes a hit with resale, though. If the owner of a Kia or Hyundai sells the car, the powertrain warranty only partially transfers, with the new owner getting just 5 years or 60,000 miles. Volkswagen's warranty is fully transferable to an owner purchasing the car used. Mitsubishi's warranties also fully transfer.
