KiOR shuttered its biocrude plant earlier this year, and suffered a huge loss in
SolaRoad Might Not Be The Best Use Of Solar, But It Sure Is Interesting
There's just something appealing about the idea of a solar-powered road. Letting that ugly ribbon through the countryside generate power, interact smartly with cars, bikes and pedestrians and even charging up your electric car. It all just seems magical, doesn't it? Well, yes, which is why there are so many critics of a small (230 feet), $3.7 million solar bike path test space that was just installed in Holland.
We're not sure which is more impressive: that a team of Australian students set a new distance-speed record for an electric vehicle or the fact that the driver got that little solar-powered bad boy up to 82 miles per hour. Either way, the Sunswift team at University of New South Wales (NSW) has earned the right to crow about their solar-powered EV. It broke a record that stood for 26 years.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will get its own version of the PlugShare charging-station locator app. Developed by Recargo with the help of Daimler, the vehicle-specific app will be integrated into the car's navigation system. The system maps the location of nearby charging stations from various networks. So far, Mercedes-Benz doesn't offer a universal pay service for the various charging networks, like those offered by BMW and Nissan. Read more at Green Car Reports.
Bike Lanes Could Help Traffic Flow; Who Rides Public Transit?
Elon Musk and his cousin, Lyndon Rive, spoke about their ideas for solar power and energy storage at a private conference in New York. Musk, the Tesla CEO and Rive, CEO of SolarCity, said that within 10 years, every solar system SolarCity sells will come with battery storage, and that it will be cheaper than getting energy from a utility company. Tesla, which provides battery packs for SolarCity, will set aside a portion of its Gigafactory's production capacity for grid-scale energy storage. Riv
Anyone having a sour day could do worse than reading the conclusions of a UBS report that lays out the near-term future of electric vehicle adoption and on-site energy storage. That's because the Swiss bank's findings paint a fairly rosy picture when it comes to sustainable transportation and stationary energy storage and production, The Guardian reports. In short: the future looks bright.

An estimated 10,000 gallons of oil spilled onto the streets of Los Angeles last week, and children, seniors and anyone with a chronic disease were asked to stay indoors because of the foul-smelling air. The public health director for Los Angeles County, Jonathan Fielding, said there could be "mild, temporary health impacts." Most of the oil was quickly cleaned up, but that doesn't mean that we should forget just what happened here and how it fits in with a history of oil spills in the US.
