When is a stock, 167-horsepower Mazda MX-5 Miata quicker than a Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, Lamborghini Gallardo, Lotus Elise and a Porsche 911? When it's raining. Sort of.

Mazda Canada arranged a unique drag race to show off the fact that the Miata's optional power retractable folding hardtop can go from top-down to top-up in just 12 seconds flat. In this video, all six cars line up for a drag race, and it starts to rain (well, sort of – but you'll have to watch the video all the way to the end to see what we mean). The green flag is waved, and the timer starts as soon as the convertibles begin to put their tops up. But because the Miata's roof mechanism gets the car's roof back up a full 5.1 seconds quicker than the second-place car, the Mazda gets a serious advantage off the line for the actual drag race.

It's a fun video. And while we've spoiled the results (come on, the video was uploaded by Mazda, you knew the Miata was going to win), be sure to see how it all unfolds, below.

The Lotus takes a while, but the reward of driving that thing on the road once your hands are all bloodied makes the struggle worthwhile.

To be fair, all the cars on that track are amazing to drive. The Lotus is not really such a stand out, except its ridiculous roofing mechanism.

Miata rock....if you're a hobbit. This car is a pain to drive for those who are over 6' tall. Since I'm 6'8, I'd have to rip the driver seat off and sit on the bench and wear aviation goggle/mask since my head will be higher than the windshield.

I rode in a friend's miata from LA to San Diego, and am over 6'. At 80mph, I wasn't aware before this that you could feel your hair just by itself... The buffeting left a strange tingling sensation in my hair for over an hour after getting out. Couldn't wear a hat since my forehead was above the windshield. Bugs hitting your forehead hurt BTW...

Heh, nice little video, made me smile. I think all Miata commercials should end with the straight down shot of a lone Miata just doing donuts.

The Lotus guy might be better off keeping a tarp and bungee cords under the seat.

It looks like he gets out but left the key in the ignition -- I'm not sure that's fair, although the point is made that it's less convenient and slower.

Looks like the only thing you don't need to set up that contraption is tent stakes and a mallet.

Not only that, You can keep a good size set of golf clubs, bag shoes and a few other things in the trunk, or a couple of small suit cases or a pretty good size order of groceries ( : By contrast, I watched a guy in a parking lot trying to find a 6 pack size package in a lamborghini, as I drove away laughing in my Miata ( :
