Family Resemblance: Jeeps old & new

Every so often, I like to just peruse photos of old concepts to see which cars, if any, they ultimately became. Some of them may have simply telegraphed styling cues that were later featured on full-production cars or trucks. Since Thanksgiving is a time spent with family, I thought it might be fun to talk about family resemblances in the automotive world. With yesterday's release of the Jeep Trailhawk concept sketch (top right), the first thing that popped into my mind was that the front end ap

BMW not interested in BLUETEC

While VW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and even Jeep will market diesel vehicles with BLUETEC technology in the U.S. soon, BMW will go its own way. BMW wants to develop a urea-based technology to reduce NOx before making a sustained push here with diesel products. The company already offers a number of diesel cars in Europe where emissions standards aren't as tough. BLUETEC with AdBlue, which was developed by Mercedes and Bosch, meets strict 2009 U.S. standards. AdBlue uses urea-based additives to cut NO

Alfa Romeo 147 diesel hot hatch

Sometime in the next few years Alfa Romeo is supposed to return to the US market, but whether we get the 147 or its successor is still questionable. The Q2 setup features a Torsen limited slip differential that greatly improves grip without negatively impacting the steeri

We have seen some Pontiac Fieros that have not been on the receiving end of owner TLC. This car is not one of them. Flickr user eightyeight_gt_v6 acquired his 1988 Fiero GT V6 in 1996 with a paltry 59,000 miles on it. The car served as a daily driver for five years and currently sports 73,000 miles on the odometer. No longer a daily driver, the car is reserved for cruising and occasional driving.

More on the concepts behind biodiesel made from algae

Like the nascent hydrogen economy, the biodiesel industry is trying to figure out the best way to move forward. Corn and soy are two of the main feedstocks right now but they're not the most promising for long-term use. As Imperium Renewables president John Plaza told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, these bridge feedstocks need to be used now so we can get a handle on how best to m
