2014 Green Car Technology Award nominees include green powertrains, carbon fiber

Acura, Audi, Honda and Porsche are among automakers whose green-related automotive technology advancements are among the 10 listed on Green Car Journal's "Green Car Technology" finalists for 2014, according to organizers of the 2014 Washington Auto Show.

Acura was praised for its three-motor all-wheel-drive Sport Hybrid powertrain, with Green Car Journal saying the system "blends high levels of performance and efficiency." Acura's parent company Honda achieved kudos for the powertrain of the Accord Plug-in Hybrid, which went on sale in the US this year. Audi's 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine and Porsche's Plug-in Hybrid powertrain also made the list, as did Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell technology and Chrysler's Ram 3.0-Liter EcoDiesel engine used in the brand's pickup trucks.

Meanwhile, BMW received praise for the lightweight carbon-fiber passenger shell of the its recently introduced i3 plug-in. And the regenerative braking systems of both the Cadillac ELR extended-range plug-in and Mazda's i-ELOOP also made the list, the former being praised for being operated via a paddle-shifter control. Nominees for the Green Car Technology award are required to "be in use on American highways" in 2014 and a winner will be chosen January 22. The Washington Auto Show is open to the public starting January 23. Last year, Mazda's Skyactiv technology won the inaugural Green Car Technology award.

Green Car Journal Announces 2014 Green Car Technology Award Finalists

Winner to be Recognized at Washington Auto Show Policy Day on January 22, 2014

Finalists include a wide array of technologies from U.S., European, and Asian auto manufacturers.

2014 Green Car Technology Award™ nominees include:

Acura Sport Hybrid SH-AWD Powertrain: This three-motor, all-wheel drive Earth Dreams sport hybrid system blends high levels of performance and efficiency.

Audi 3.0-liter TDI Diesel Engine: Audi's 3.0-liter turbo direct injection engine with start-stop enables full-size vehicles to offer high fuel efficiency and great performance.

BMW i3 CFRP Passenger Cell: BMW engineers an industry first with its use of a lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic Passenger Cell in a production vehicle.

Cadillac ELR Regen on Demand: This system allows drivers paddle shifter control of regenerative braking and deceleration to recapture energy and create on board electricity.

Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost Engine: Ford's smallest EcoBoost engine applies direct injection and turbocharging to eke hybrid-like 45 highway mpg from the 2014 Fiesta.

Honda Accord Plug-In Powertrain: Achieving up to 115 MPGe, Honda's Earth Dreams plug-in powerplant allows driving in electric, hybrid, or fuel-only modes.

Hyundai Fuel Cell: Bringing hydrogen propulsion to a production vehicle available in the U.S., Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell is quiet, zero-emission, and has a 300 mile range.

Mazda i-ELOOP Brake Energy Regeneration System: A unique capacitor-based regenerative braking system designed to reduce parasitic engine losses that rob mpg.

Porsche Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain: Fast and powerful, Porsche's plug-in hybrid powerplant brings exceptional performance and allows all-electric driving up to 84 mph.

Ram Truck 3.0-Liter EcoDiesel Engine: The first clean diesel engine for light-duty trucks in the U.S., the EcoDiesel powerplant is efficient and approved for B20 biodiesel.

The Green Car Technology Award™ focuses on technologies that enable significantly improved environmental performance in vehicles today. To qualify for consideration, technologies must be in use on American highways during the award year. The winner of the 2014 Green Car Technology Award™ will be announced during the Washington Auto Show's second Policy Day on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
