Watch Ram's Chief Engineer explain the benefits of quarter-ton diesel

Well, what we've learned from Ram's new video with chief engineer Mike Cairns showing off the upcoming Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickup is that... it looks good in silver. Cairns more or less espoused the virtues of the truck in the two-minute video, commenting on its toughness and saying it'll have the all-important "best-in-class" fuel economy. He added that the 2014 model-year truck would start being sold by the end of the year.

He also confirmed that the truck's engine would be of the 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel variety, but we already knew that, as Ram parent Chrysler said as much in February. That motor is already in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel and it cranks out 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Chrysler in late June also detailed pricing on the upcoming 1500s, with the diesel option adding about $2,850 to the sticker price. As for fuel economy (the gas-powered Ram 1500 V6 gets 20 miles per gallon combined) and towing capacity, Cairns wouldn't divulge specifics. We're thinking something around 30 miles per gallon on the highway sounds about right.

And, as we said, the rig looks good in silver. Check out the video below.
