Acura doesn't tend to do concept cars these days that don't foreshadow a specific upcoming production model. The ZDX prototype of 2010 previewed the production version, as did the ILX and RLX showcars of 2012 and the MDX of 2013. The NSX concept is on its way to production, as the SUV-X concept is likely to do as well in the coming years. So when Acura revealed the TLX prototype at the Detroit Auto Show a few months ago, we all but knew it would only be a matter of time before that, too, would be produced. And here it is.

Spied all but completely undisguised while undergoing testing, this pair of TLX prototypes (one in white, one in black) looks almost identical to the show car. You might spot a few minor tweaks here and there – the strip of LEDs in the lower front bumper have been replaced by round fog lamps and some of the chrome accents are missing – but by and large, we're looking at the same vehicle we saw in Detroit earlier this year.

The finished production version of the TLX is expected to debut at the New York Auto Show next month, after which it will replace both the TSX and the TL, slotting in between the smaller ILX and the larger RLX in Acura's sedan lineup.

I hope it has a turbo 4 to go with the 6. Looks wise, I'm not blown the way. the 3 gen TL ( 2004-2008) blew me away on style.

Front end looks a lot like my 2004 3G TL with the A-Spec lower lip. It was quite the looker back then...10 years ago. But this near production version is not what I had hoped for. I was impressed when the prototype was released but my excitement has fizzled seeing these pics. Oh, Acura. Why did you tone down the styling so much?

I prefer the LED foglights on the prototype. Also miss those unique rear view mirrors on the doors with the LEDs. Wonder if Acura will offer their typical body kits with the lower front, side sills, and rear valance to match the show car?

Jeesh, is this car company even relevant any more? Ugly grilles, FWD, anemic engines. Even Buick puts out more interesting cars.

Since Acura's giant beak shield debuted (2009?), each refresh they've tried to shrink it a little and get back to the previous, more effective look of the mid-2000s. Now it looks like they're almost there and, who would have thought, it looks about a decade old.

I can't stand Acura's carry-over design staples: heavy focus on the symmetry line that runs down the spine to the nose, and that weird beak theme they've always got going up front. It doesn't look athletic or luxurious... or even attractive. There's just a whole lot of aesthetic bloat and weird tack-on elements everywhere.

Exciting as a piece of paper towel without a "gift".

Wow, they sure are serious about making boring cars. They nail it every time.

Is it me or does the front end look really long? The front overhang seems to be huge compared to the old models

It's not you. It does seem very long.

Yes, way too long. Too much bulk and overhang leading to the front wheels......a criticism that can be leveled at many cars these days.

A return to the TL that was such a success. The front is very similar to this 2008 type S TL http://cdn-www.rsportscars.com/images/acura/2008-acura-tl/2008_acura_tl_17.jpg
