Well this is something you don't see every day. Thieves in Amsterdam have been preying upon unsuspecting Porsche models recently. That may not be unusual in and of itself, but the burglars are not attempting to make off with the entire car. Rather, they are stealing only the HID headlights. But what's most interesting is the purpose behind snatching just the headlamp assemblies.

It is believed that the headlights make for ideal lighting solutions when growing marijuana indoors. The high-intensity discharge bulbs give off more heat and require much less power than standard grow lamps, yet, critically, they offer the right quality of light and heat. According to De Telegraaf, as many as 20 Porsches fell victim to this trend, resulting in thousands of dollars in damage. The cost of a typical HID assembly for hydroponics can run from $100 to $500, and up.

This is apparently the latest hot-button item to be stolen from luxury cars, following navigation systems and airbags. Scroll down to check out the video of a thief making short work of Panamera peepers.

The suggestion that these are being used as grow lights is unsubstantiated. These are likely just being sold on ebay or the like. Anyone who knows about electricity and hydroponics is probably laughing. While they could be used in clone chambers or even to veg out small plants the need to get a 12v power supply and actually hook these up would cost more than just getting a couple 100w cfls(100 real watts, not 100 watt equiv) at the hardware store for 15 bucks a piece or a 400w metal halide for 100 bucks.(cheaper if you buy a used one or steal a street light). I declare this story to be a complete fabrication or someone who was joking and then was believed about the subject.

These headlights cost over $800 to replace, so I believe the thieves will sell them on EBay and NOT for marijuana plants. Whoever wrote this article must have been smoking a few joints lol

Why would I risk jail for porsche lights when I can buy HID's on ebay for 60 bucks or so??

One last comment..theft of HID headlamps was epidemic with early Audis as well...it was bad enough that many people would buy the HID lamps on ebay (probably guessed they were stolen) and R&R them to cars that came with halogen headlamps. Of course, the stolen HID headlamps didn't have the self-leveling capability of the OEM HID installation and so the idiots who retrofitted went around blinding everyone else.

Hold on now I thought pot was legal in Holland?! Seeing the type of car and the price tag of the head lights alone tells me more like stolen for resale or for his own porsche. You can go buy weed at a local tea shop over there and enjoy it with biscuits and tea.

Why buy it when you can grow it cheaper, that why legalization doesn't work.

It's legal to use and purchase but you have to have a license to grow it and it's not cheap.

Theft is very bad for the economy, both for the loss of parts, insurance coverage, and time for the courts, and jails. Inmates have to be fed, too. The expense never ends.

Let's see......I want to grow pot, I don't want to get caught. The lights are relatively inexpensive and the reward for a successful grow is high. So yeah, I should jeaprodize the entire operation stealing the simple stuff. What'a bunch of morons.

I have to laugh at these stupid people. Its like the 2 drug runners that where delivering dope from Chicago to Detroit got cought doing 98 MPH on the I94 with the back seat full of dope. When asked why risking going so fast they said "We are running late for the delivery". Takes all kinds LOL
