Great Britain is a relatively small island with a lot of people and therefore a lot of cars. So it's fairly important that motorists on crowded roads are as civilized as possible... Naturally, though, not all Brits are pleasant drivers. Gocompare.com decided to poll 3,000 motorists to see, by vehicle make, which drivers are the meanest of the bunch.
In the UK there is a phenomenon called "white van drivers," which consists of mostly self-employed males who use vans for everything from delivery to carpentry work – pretty much how Americans use pickup trucks. In short, the Brits can't stand these drivers because they're always in a hurry and don't want anyone in their way. The "white van" finished second overall, showing just how despised number one really is. That distinction goes to BMW owners, who were deemed the most likely to tailgate, speed or flip the bird on public roads, lending some credence to Audi's hillarious "Meet the Beckers" commercials of a while back. Of course Audi drivers didn't fare much better, landing at number three on the list of ticked off drivers. Ford managed a number four ranking, followed by Land Rover owners.

Other fascinating data from the survey includes the fact that nearly one in 10 British drivers claim that they've had an accident as a result of road rage. And of all the bad driving habits of others, the thing Brits hate most is tailgating, as 58 percent call the practice frightening. 37 percent find the practice of flashing one's lights as a gesture for the driver in front of them to get out of the way offensive, and 32 percent have been flipped the bird. For more on the survey, including the rest of the makes that managed to make the top 10, head over to the Telegraph.

      I'm surprised people consider flashing lights to be offensive. If it is, then how are we supposed to signal people to move over? I mean I don't want to sound like I'm some ridiculously crazy driver or anything, but sometimes there's one car in the left lane holding EVERYONE up, or sometimes you might really be in a hurry for some sort of emergency.

      I always considered flashing to be the polite alternative to the obvious honking..
        • 4 Years Ago
        You're right, the offensive and arrogant drivers are the drivers who automatically gravitate to the far left lane and stay in that lane all day no matter the speed.

      If slow drivers wouldn't troll the passing lane, us BMW drivers wouldn't have to tailgate them.

      I can't pass up this occasion. In my neck of the woods, it's the Honda especially Civic drivers who I loath the most. Luck for them I got too much to loose! No, I won't flip them my finger, instead I'd love to take a baseball bat and perform some facial reconstruction.....nothing personal of coarse.......

        @BRUNO TULLIANI

        While I agree with your stance on Honda drivers, I can't help but be bothered by your demeanor and the anger which resides deep inside of you.

        Have you considered counseling?

        @tiger, many states have laws against increasing the sound of your automibile, many citizens and officials just ignore it.
        I had a 'loud muffler' ticket once, granted it was totally a race pipe, but i paid my $45 fine, it wasn't even a fix-it ticket.
        the reason i was pulled over was for the car i was driving, a lowered modified integra, on a saturday night at 1230. i was on my way home from work.

      Color me shocked.

      How is the practice of flashing your lights to get the person in front of you to move over "rude?" Maybe they should just realize that the fast lane is for passing, not cruising. There are two ways to get the attention of another driver: Honking the horn or flashing your lights. Take your pick.
        • 4 Years Ago
        When you eventually pass them just slow down obscenely in front of them and constantly block them from lane changes. Then slam your brakes all of a sudden, call the whambulance and tell everyone that your neck hurts. That'll teach them not to move over!
        (kidding, kidding, though some days when you see some idiot doing 10 below the limit in the left lane synced up with some other idiot doing 10 below in the right lane it's quite tempting.

        Just give them a dose of their own medicine

      So BMW drivers are still c*cks then (according to the TG Crew)? I thought it was Audi drivers now?
      • 4 Years Ago
      If you don't want to get flashes or tailgate, just go back to the slow lane, please!
      • 4 Years Ago
      I guess driving a fast car and getting stuck behind all of the washing machines with wheels that go 0-60 in a minute can get annoying...

      they obviously havent met me yet! no i havent been in or caused any accidents, but the finger pops up regularly and the words that come out of my mouth will even make the devil take off running! and i will run the elderly off the road if they feel it necessary to do 25 in a 45 and 35 in a 55! if you dont have enough strength in you foot to actually press the gas pedal, then you need to quit driving! you are a hazzard and yes you can get a ticket for going too slow, you are impeding traffic!

        @Neil

        "if you dont have enough strength in you foot to actually press the gas pedal, then you need to quit driving!"

        hahahahahaha well said!
      • 4 Years Ago
      What if you are going the speed limit in the left lane? Maybe there are just too many drivers in a hurry. Relax folks.
        • 4 Years Ago
        That's not what it's there for. The left lane is for passing.

        Slower traffic keep right.

      The kind of BMW hate/angst expressed here (along with various other preconceptions of what the driver is like) is one final thing keeping me from ordering an X5 diesel. I've owned BMW's before and it does get really old fast having this whole envy/digust/spite thing crop up from time to time in public. What's worse is that I have absolutely zero interest in the "prestige" of the car and I hate paying extra for that. If Hyundai made a large SUV that handled and got 26mpg I'd be there.

      What's insane is that my desire to avoid this BS led me to cross shop the Kia Sportage! I like Infiniti for its low key quality, but their SUV's are just silly hatchbacks with 500 lbs of extra weight and heavy steering.

      They're just cars.
