Cadillac Presidential Limousine – Click above for high-res image gallery

You can't always get what you want. President Barack Obama said today that he originally wanted his presidential limo to boast a hybrid drivetrain. So what keeps the ruler of the free world from getting what he asks for? In this case, it was the Secret Service. Obama's body guards said that a hybrid engine couldn't produce the kind of power necessary to scoot the massive Cadillac down the road in an emergency situation. That's saying something, considering the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid boasts a V8 with enough power to have a 7,700-pound towing capacity. Part of us thinks it might also be a security concern to have a vehicle that may be more susceptible to electronic interference from nefarious sources, but that's just a guess.

No one's exactly sure what the Commander-in-Chief's car has under the hood, but it's a good bet that it has eight cylinders and enough torque to move a mountain of armor plating. We hear it's a diesel and we're guessing it probably nets fuel economy on par with most RVs.

Obama's pining for a hybrid limo came to light during a speech about the government's recent purchase of 5,000 of hybrid cars and trucks for federal use. No word on whether or not the executive branch got the General Motors employee discount.

Why not a very powerful clean turbo-diesel that runs on bio-diesel?

I really can't stand, and don't understand, the fixation on electric and hybrid gas-electric by the uninformed. There exists, and has always existed, a clean and economical alternative, but no one wants to look into it.

That's a huge hunk of car.
Yeah, that thing is massive in every way. Thick all around. Look at the wheels and space between them and the fenders.
The one that's shown? I don't think it's even been put back in service since the inauguration, I keep seeing the older DTS-like one.

Hybrids work during stop and go traffic for light-weight cars.

Obama want to slap a hybrid in a vehicle the size of a tank, weights about the same, and that is always escorted by a dozen other cars and never stops at red lights?

I’m getting a feeling the guy just likes to spending money...

An electric motor has 100% torque at 0 RPMs. How could that possibly move something heavy?!?!?!

He probably can't have it because they would have to armor plate the whole hybrid system. They might not have room, or just don't have the training to deal with it.

Diesel is the way to go here. B100 might not work depending on the weather, but they should be able to at least run B20 unless it gets really cold out.

@Danny: I think the military is also looking at developing hybrid tech for military vehicles. I could see this tech making it's way to the President's mobile.

        @Danny.
As far as I can tell, the M1 Abrams is not a hybrid in any fashion.

Yet US military tanks are technically series hybrids, seeing as they have a good ol' gas turbines powering an electrical generators.

Na na na Na na.na.........................WHO CARES?

Not sure why Obama would ask that it was a hybrid in the first place as the pollution and fuel savings would be moot. I had witnessed on 2 occasions his motorcade while in Washington recently if you add up all the cars in the procession it amounts to about 10 motorcycles (no pollution controls whatsoever), several police cars, half dozen or so Chevy Suburbans for the secret service, and an ambulance following at the end, not to mention the Navy helicopter circling the area beforehand.

And he is concerned that his car should be a hybrid...that is really silly.

Don't forget the pair of F-15's flying CAP (Combat Air Patrol) overhead...

"You can't always get what you want."

I call BS on this. If you set goals that are reasonable, you are competant to achieve them and you deserve to succeed. If you agree with the toxic garbage I quoted above (no offense Zach), you are mentally handicapping yourself.

WHY will you do that to yourself?! You CAN have what you want... sometimes it just takes a little more effort.

I vote for Obama to ride in whatever the man wants.

If you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.

if obama wants to go green, why not go B100? no modification necessary!

I know for a fact that it's the now-defunct Cadillac V12 that was in development, and almost approved for production, a few years back.

I doubt the Presidential limos actually drive that many miles per year. And since the number of such limos ever built is in the single digits, the engineering cost of a hybrid drivetrain would never be recouped by fuel savings.

One less flight on Air Force One would save more than 40,000 gallons of fuel just for Air Force One itself. Wherever Air Force One goes, it is preceded by multiple flights of Air Force transport aircraft carrying helicopters, limos, security vehicles, etc.
I completely agree. This pales in comparison to the amount of fuel Air Force 1 Consumes!
Not taking a couple of flights in the presidential plane would save more emissions than a hybrid limo.

That car will cause mayhem all over Prague today.
Too bad I live close to that main road to the airport, which will be closed down.
Can't that guy (Obama) take a regular cab like the rest of us?

Hybrids are all well and good but when it comes right down to it, the technology is not nearly advanced enough for the Secret Service to be comfortable with it. Besides would the extra 2 mpg really be worth the cost/resources?
which is exactly why he sold his 300C and got a hybrid at the start of the presidential campaign trail
        • 4 Years Ago
It's not about the MPG savings. Hell, I doubt the thing gets more than 10 MPG as it is. At the end of the day, Obama is a politician. A hybrid would be both good for his image and his agenda, whether or not you agree with either.
That he even asked for a hybrid presidential limo proves that this Dumbass-in-Chief is an even bigger dumbass than the last Dumbass-in-Chief. Sorry but no US president has any concern whatsoever about the powerplant in any transport he happens to be in. Leave that to the people that actually have a clue about preserving his safety and security.

We truly have outdone ourselves as a nation in electing this clueless yutz. To be honest though I don't think the prime alternative would have been more cluefull in any kind of a meaningful way.
