In a none-too-shocking announcement, Chrysler announced plans to invest $179 million to convert its engine plant in Dundee, MI, from building the so-called World Engine to Fiat's 1.4-liter Fully Integrated Robotized Engine. Back in September, Chrysler bought out its former partners Hyundai and Mitsubishi so that it could utilize the Dundee facilities to build the new Multiair powerplants.

Both Chrysler and Fiat are likely to use powerplants built at the facility, with the first application being the diminutive Fiat 500 that's slated for North American production by the end of 2010. Fiat's Multiair technology is said to increase power by up to ten percent while offering a similar reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Later, a turbocharged unit will be built at the plant that will offer V6-level power using 25 percent less fuel. Multiair technology will eventually be added to the rest of the Chrysler engine lineup, including the new Pentastar V6.

Chrysler promises that the Dundee plant will add 573 new jobs to the local economy including 155 directly at the Dundee plant for a single shift of engine production. That was enough to earn a series of incentives from the state of Michigan and tax credits from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Village of Dundee that could add up to $4.6 million over the next ten years. Auburn Hills, Mich., Dec 17, 2009 - Chrysler Group LLC will invest $179 million to launch production of an advanced technology, fuel-efficient engine for the North American market, which will be built at the company's Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) plant in Michigan.

The investment will create up to 573 new jobs industry-wide, including up to 155 new Chrysler Group jobs.

The GEMA plant, located in Dundee, Michigan, will produce the 1.4-liter, 16-valve Fully Integrated Robotized Engine (FIRE) for use in Chrysler Group's growing fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles. FIRE is a collaboration between Chrysler Group and Fiat powertrain groups and will include Fiat's innovative advanced technologies to reduce engine emissions and improve fuel economy.

"This is one more important step forward that demonstrates our intent to deliver on the promise of the Fiat-Chrysler strategic alliance and the substance of the road map we laid out in November," said Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler Group LLC Chief Executive Officer.

"This project further demonstrates that Michigan has the competitive business climate, infrastructure and talented workforce to compete in the global marketplace," said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.

"We are pleased and excited with the I-4 FIRE engine loading at GEMA. The UAW is committed to working with the Company to continue doing everything we can to ensure this new engine launch is successful." said General Holiefield, Vice President and Director of the UAW, Chrysler Department.

Today's announcement follows a thorough site selection review by the company and actions by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Village of Dundee in support of the project.

Production of the 1.4-liter engine at GEMA will begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. The first application of the engine will be in the North American-built Fiat 500 that will go into production in 2011.

Chrysler Group has two plants at the GEMA complex, located at 5800 North Ann Arbor Road outside Dundee. In addition to the South plant which will produce the FIRE, the North Plant, opened in October 2005, produces the World Gas Engine, Chrysler Powertrain's naturally-aspirated, four-cylinder engine family.

Auburn Hills, Mich., Dec 17, 2009 - Chrysler Group LLC will debut Fiat's 1.4-liter, in-line four-cylinder Fully Integrated Robitized Engine (FIRE) featuring Multiair in the Fiat 500 starting in 2010. The engine, well-suited for a small car application, delivers 100 horsepower (75 kW) at 6,750 rpm and 95 lb.-ft. (129 N•m) of torque at 4,250 rpm. A turbo version also will be available in future applications. The 1.4-liter FIRE features Fiat's Multiair technology, which significantly reduces emissions while improving fuel economy and power delivery.

The 1.4-liter FIRE features four valves per cylinder and incorporates state-of-the-art technology for Fully Variable Valve Actuation (FVVA), also known as MultiAir. Multiair is a sophisticated technology that delivers an increase in power up to 10 percent and a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions up to 10 percent when compared to similar engines. A turbo version of the engine is also planned and will produce a fuel economy improvement up to 25 percent when compared to a V-6 engine with equivalent power.

The MultiAir system consists of electro-hydraulic variable valve actuators filled with conventional oil, which is interposed between the camshaft and each valve. A solenoid valve is energized every 360-degree camshaft rotation, regulating the quantity of oil addressed to the actuator or to a reservoir. The lift of the valve is a function of the quantity of oil addressed to the actuator, ranging from full lift to complete valve closure. Each solenoid valve may also delay application of the actuator in advance, leading to late valve opening or early valve closing.

MultiAir is exclusive for Chrysler Group in North America and is based on a series of Fiat Powertrain patents related to hardware, combustion strategies and controls that allow for full control of the lift and timing of engine valves.

In the early 1970s, robotics in assembly plants was not common. The term "FIRE" came into existence when Fiat integrated the use of robotics in the production process of manufacturing plants. Although mechanized assembly is commonplace today, the brand name FIRE has remained with Fiat's powertrain lineup.

The 1.4-liter FIRE with Multiair is the world's first mass production engine to incorporate such technology to control the intake valves. Dedicated components have been developed to accommodate four "bricks" (one for each cylinder), which package relevant components. MultiAir technology can be adapted to different types of engines, including Diesels for enhanced NOx control, and is planned for Chrysler Powertrain's four-cylinder World Gas Engine and all-new Pentastar V-6

      I too am confused as to why people are upset that Chrysler/Fiat are doing. Everyone has been whining that Chrysler didn't build anything the public wanted. Now they are in a position to do so, while simultaneously adding American jobs, and people whine about that too.

      Wishing death to any American production base is just stupid, and un-American (assuming you are American). Chrysler has proven their ability in the past to build, sell and profit on vehicles. It's only been the last 5 years thier product line has gone down hill (I seem to remember the Pacifica, Ram, 300, etc were all very well received when they came out.

      While its nice to see some advanced Fiat engine tech coming into the World Engine(Which isn't very good from what I heard) and Pentastar V6, but why not the 5.7 Hemi and 6.4 Hemi? I'm sure with DI, Multiair, Aluminum Blocks and whatnot would get the HP numbers higher(440 for the 5.7 and 560 for the 6.4?) I know that they are slated to have 390HP and 525HP respectively.

        I remember Ferrari putting multiair on the F430 but not getting much improvement, but I don't remember if it was because of the displacement or the RPM..

      This will be a good engine. The Fiat-Chryslers will be a big upgrade and the 4 cylinder powertrain will be better than the Chrysler-Mitsubishi engines. The 4 cyl turbo that will come next will make their compacts fly !

        Because last I checked it wasn't Chrysler LLC who wasn't paying the government loan back. Actually they already made payments back and will have the loan paid off before the deadline if things keep going the way they are. The loan made to them not Old Carco.

        You're so mad at 4B when it's a drop in the bucket compared to the financial market who won't be paying anything back from the 700B plus bailout. I think you have your priorities a bit screwed up here.

        All those billion dollar drops in the bucket sure add up. They add up to the trillions we're in debt. I'm sure printing more money will solve the problem though... Right? Is that your idea of good economics?

      I don't understand why Fiat is going to keep the Chrysler name alive. They should just absorb the assets and get rid of the name. Then people wouldn't have the bad taste in their mouth from all that bailout money getting wasted.

      I guess those who produce the least and are of the lowest ability, really often do get the most. Sad and backwards.

      GM and Chrysler need to stop embarassing the USA and fold up their tents already.

        Did you take a course in philosophy? The reason I ask, in philosophy the teach you the practical knowledge of "Cause and Affect." Allow me to refresh you memory:

        Cause: Diamler swoops in and create the comapny that "is" considered a "Marriage of Equals." Actually Diamlers was loosing a lot of money and aquired Chrysler to steal all the money.

        Cause: Cerberus comes in and thinks that buying Chrysler was the deal of the century. Wasn't interested in building cars, but rather making a quick buck.

        Affect: Chrysler has no money to design, develop or build cars.

        Was this matter created by reckless spending? At the time of the Diamler was the darling of Detroit and had a range of products that were appropriate for the time. The folks at this company should not suffer for matter that were our of their hands. They were lead to believe that the German company would come in and provide them with the tools and technology to develop, and produce better cars. they had no idea it would come to this.

      I don't hate cars. I hate bad cars. I don't hate clothes, or food, or wine or cigars, or music, or movies either. I just hate the ones that suck!

      Chrysler and GM have been building sub-standard cars for decades. Lots of other car companies have gone through bad periods... Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, Maserati etc...

      The problem is, after throwing money at the problem, and after continuous proven piss-poor performance, Chrysler and GM still have people cheerleading them, and tax dollars get thrown at the problem. It's a ridiculous solution. The simple solution is to let nature take its course on these companies, and allow them to be taken over, dissolved or absorbed.

        Well pigeon or matthew or shane or whatever you're calling yourself today... You say "decades" for what really amounts to about fifteen bad years in the 70s and 80s and a few bad models other than that. In the past twenty years most of the products have been fairly reliable, if nothing else. I know because I have owned many of them and they are not the crap I keep reading about. So go back to your Lexus dreams and light up another hit from the crack pipe. The American domestic manufacturers are putting out the best products they have in decades right now while Toyota falters under one design and reliability problem after another.

        When you say decades you lead into the fact you know very little of Chrysler as a corporation or company. In the 90's Chrysler was one of the most profitable and well loved auto makers. They have always lead in design and style for most of their life.

        In comes Daimler and for some reason, whatever you wish to call it, quality and resources go way down. Cerberus didn't help either. All money was stripped from the company as anyone can see via Yahoo Finance Numbers.

        Around 2006 according to Edmunds, JD Power, and CR you see quality going back up. Slowly the brands of Chrysler have risen from their low side of 99-2005. Already 2009 and 2010 models are being called class leaders in technology, materials, and quality. 2009 Ram is THE most awarded truck and the 2010 Challenger is the best sports car by JD Power.

        ALLPAR is a great site to get most of your information correctly. I suggest visiting it and getting a better understanding of a company you know very little to nothing about.

        Unfortunately the argument you have is the TARP funds not being repaid. Well you need to understand bankruptcy first. Again this doesn't fall on New Chrysler LLC shoulders in any light. Has ZERO to do with them. You need to acknowledge that first. What can be acquired from the Old Carco will go towards the loans and any money gained from the lawsuit versus Daimler will also go to the TARP loan. However you can't get blood out of a turnip and crying about it wont do any good.
