GM recalls Camaro, Traverse, SUVs/pickups for various issues

General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have announced a suite of recalls for the Chevrolet Camaro, Traverse and various body-on-frame SUVs and pickups (Cadillac's Escalade, Chevrolet's Avalanche, Colorado, Suburban and Tahoe, along with GMC's Canyon and Yukon).
The Camaro recall has been discussed before, but now we have the official language and affected unit numbers to share with you. The recall of 1,243 Camaros is due to the possibility of the positive battery cable rubbing against the starter motor housing. When the insulation is worn through because of that chafing, the system can short out and the car won't start (or continue running if the motor is already going). Dealers will reroute the positive cable to fix.
15,393 2009 model-year Traverse crossovers are being recalled for a parking brake cable link that is not to federal specifications. According to the official press release, the parking brake pedal may cause the cable link to snap. Dealers will replace the cable link connector for free. Oddly, the recall does not make mention of GM's other Lambda-based three-row crossovers, which include the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook.
Finally, 27,189 GM SUVs and pickups are being recalled due to potential faults with their fuel system control modules. The modules might have a seal problem that allows water in, which could then cause a short- or open- circuit, a development that could potentially trigger a host of warning lights or render the vehicle inoperable. Dealers will install a new fuel system control module unit at no cost. You can read all of the notices after the jump.

These are all minor issues that affect only a few vehicles, but the media (of course) will jump on it and scream how bad GM quality is. Why is it that that never happens when a Japanese company has an issue (and they won't even accept the responsibility)?
I would bet that every one of these problems is not even GM's fault, but rather a supplier issue.

Toyota has a lot of issues lately... yet they are still somehow the most reliable cars??? If a car rusts after 5 years it's reliable???
I wonder what will happen when Toyota will run out of money to pay off everyone?
John 3:58PM (5/12/2009)
Agreed. What's up with reporting all these recalls here lately, most of which are very minor?
Can I get paid to cut and paste information from the NHTSA web site too?
PJ 4:25PM (5/12/2009)
I suspect the high number of recall posts is due precisely to users "jumping on" them and screaming about either GM or Toyota quality for 100+ (more-or less identical) comments, inexplicably forgetting that "their side" had the same opportunity to whine the last time around.
Great for pageviews!
Coolio 4:26PM (5/12/2009)
John.
You forgot that they have to paste in a photo from their archives ! !

I think we just do it for all the fanbois, everyone was complaining about vw's recall for the R32, of which only 5,000 units sold, here we have over 20,000 units which could be affected by a similar issue and we'll see less hoopla in the comments. It's just how it is.
MachinaDC5 3:49PM (5/12/2009)
Stuff like this happens, sometimes it just happens to some companies more than others. A lot more. And in all sorts of hilarious ways.

So what else is new...

Your 100 percent right my friend.
Thats the siutations american auto markers have found themselves in.
People comlpain about toyota and what not. But what they FAIL to see is that you find about 5 recalls issues dealing with american autos...to about Toyota 1. In these past two days alone there have been about 4 recall issues for american autos alone.....what does that show?
NO toyota cars are not the best built cars, but they have far less issues. When it comes down to it thats alll that matters
300C 3:49PM (5/12/2009)
Yeah I agree with you, phewop118, the media will have a field day with this. Credit needs to be given to GM for doing the right thing and working with NHTSA in getting the vehicles fixed....they could be like that Japanese automaker that just covers issues up, rather than fix the problem (TOYOTA ARE YOU LISTENING!?!!?!?)
One reason the Traverse could be recalled and not the other Lambdas is that its built in Spring Hill, TN while the other Lambdas are built in the Delta Twp, MI plant. Therefore, they could be parts from different suppliers.

of course these GM recalls have something to do with Toyota...how ever did i ever over look that. Silly me, i though the article was about GM recalls, not Toyota recalls, my mistake
thanks for pointing that out :)

Is it just me, or does the problem with the Traverse sound like someone at the factory checked the wrong box when ordering that particular part from the supplier, resulting in a slightly out of spec item? Same with the fuel control module on the SUVs - GM has put these computers under the hoods of their vehicles since the '90s and now they screw it up? Someone ordered the wrong part at the factory or made it wrong at the supplier.
This kind of thing happens to every car company and I hate it when ANY of them get panned for something so minor. Its major engineering failures - like the quick wearing rear disc brakes on current generation Honda Accords, sludging Toyota motors, strong-as-glass Honda 4 speed autos and flammable cruise control units on Fords - that really deserve lambasting in the press.

The Ford issue was beaten to death...even in the Detroit area. I remember there being long segments on it but the whole Toyota issue was a small blurb. Also, the local news always blamed Ford even though they weren't 100% at fault.
U.K. 4:19PM (5/12/2009)
Reliability these days seem to be not the NUMBER of recalls. Just so long, as they are less than other manufactures.
Why not do the design or job correctly in the first place?

So you can do it better ?
Yeah, yeah, that is all they do - make cars.
But you never make an error in your line of work (I am assuming, sir, that you are gainfully employed) ?
I am Rich 4:24PM (5/12/2009)
Remember when Ford used to say "Quality is job 1"?
Yeah, at least it is a little more quality than GM.

Haven't all 3 of these recalls been reported on this site in the past?
No news here, so why help the "media" keep pouring salt in GM's wounds?
300C, thank you for your comment.
GM's honesty keeps getting them in trouble while other "foreign" OEM's hide issues and never get in any trouble for it.
