2017 BMW Model Year Preview and Updates

You can't be all things to all people, but with its vast expansion of model types the Bavarian brand is giving it a try. BMW doesn't offer a pickup and has no minivans, but in most other categories BMW is both full-in and – with its lineup of 'M' cars - full-tilt.

BMW i3: For BMW's groundbreaking EV, a no-cost DC FastCharge is now available (for two years), as well as real-time traffic, a universal garage door opener, and 19-inch wheels.

BMW i8: A new color – Protonic Red with Frozen Grey metallic accents – is introduced to BMW's high-performance two-seater, along with miscellaneous trim changes.

2 SERIES: The small coupe and convertible receive new nomenclature, courtesy of two new engine families: 230i replaces 228i, and M240i replaces 235i. Along with that, trim levels have been realigned.

3 SERIES SEDAN AND WAGON: The 3 Series receives new nomenclature (see above) and trim realignments.

4 SERIES COUPE, CONVERTIBLE AND GRAN COUPE: The 4 Series receives the same new designations as the 2 Series and 3 Series, along with revised packages and trim.

5 SERIES: An all-new design due in US showrooms this spring, BMW's midsize sedan enjoys a weight reduction – using aluminum, magnesium and high-strength steel – of up to 137 pounds, as well as improved steering. Faster acceleration is available via all-new four-cylinder and six-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged powerplants. There are also (as is increasingly typical within the luxe category) improved driver assistance systems.

5 SERIES GRAN TURISMO: Unchanged.

6 SERIES COUPE, CONVERTIBLE AND GRAN COUPE: All variants receive iDrive 5.0, wireless charging and enhanced USB and Bluetooth technology.

ALPINA B7: The B7 receives an upgrade in standard equipment.

X1: BMW's smallest crossover receives changes to trim and equipment packages.

X3: The compact crossover receives upgrades to standard equipment and package changes.

X4 SPORTS ACTIVITY COUPE: The X3-based 4-door receives a new X4 M40i designation; its previous moniker – xDrive35i – is retired.

X5: The well-established and increasingly luxurious X5 receives upgrades to standard equipment and realignment of packages.

X6 SPORTS ACTIVITY COUPE: The original crossover coupe receives updates to standard equipment and realignment of packages.

M2 COUPE: New in '16, the coupe enjoys an enhanced list of standard equipment.

M3 SEDAN: An 'Adaptive M Suspension' is standard, as is iDrive 5.0. Also, packages are tweaked.

M4 COUPE AND CONVERTIBLE: As above, an Adaptive M Suspension and iDrive 5.0 are now standard, and packages are tweaked.

X5M: The crossover's navigation is updated to iDrive 5.0, and packages are realigned.

X6M: The 4-door SAV's navigation is updated to iDrive 5.0, and packages are realigned.
