If you are fortunate to own your vehicle, the proof you have of this is your car title. Perhaps you’ve been thinking about selling your car, maybe transferring the ownership to your teenaged child, or then again maybe you are thinking about moving out-of-state. In all of these instances you will need your car title. So what happens when you go to reach for it, only to discover it has been lost? Some people have even had the unfortunate experience of having their car title stolen. Not to worry as you can certainly obtain a duplicate car title with relative ease.

In the state of Minnesota you can apply for the duplicate car title in one of two ways - either in person or by mail. We'll outline the steps involved with each.

  • The parties that can apply for a duplicate car title are the owner(s), the lienholder, and/or the legal representative of the vehicle owner.

In Person * You will need to start by filling out the Application for Duplicate Title, Registration, Cab or Lien Card (Form PS2067A).

  • The form requires your driver's license number and your signature.

  • Fill out the make and model of your car, as well as the license plate number.

  • All this information can then be submitted at your local Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) location.

  • There is a fee of $8.25 for the duplicate title, and then a $10 filing fee.

By mail

  • Should you choose to file by mail, you'll still need to fill in that same form from before (Form PS2067A), and include the same payment as above.

  • The form and your payment can be sent to:

    Driver and Vehicle Services
    Town Square Building
    445 Minnesota St. Suite 187
    St Paul, MN 55101

Typically the applications are processed and sent out the next business day. You can find more information about replacing a lost or stolen car title in Minnesota by visiting the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles site.
