Fans of simple, lightweight motoring, rejoice - we now have images of the next-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata undergoing testing at der Nürburgring Nordschleife. Now, to be fair, this isn't some lightly camouflaged example that will give us a great peak of what the next Miata, which will also become the next Alfa Romeo Spider, will look like. This is a mule, with the new bits hidden under a current Miata's body. That doesn't mean there aren't a few scraps of valuable information here, though.

According to our flock of camera-toting spies at the Nürburgring, the next Miata is likely to grow a bit, as new models are wont to do. In particular, it will be longer and wider, and the wheelbase is likely going to be stretched, based on the shape of the wheel wells and doors. Both of those factors will add more space in the cabin.

Those are the big indications provided by these photos, but while the MX-5 might be growing, it's a safe bet based on these images that it, and the (likely pricier) Alfa, will retain the classic, long-hood, short-deck styling that so typifies rear-drive roadsters.

With testing still in the earliest of stages, it's not clear when the MX-5 will arrive on the market, as Mazda has kept that intel locked up as tight as possible. As always, as soon as more info is available, you'll be able to read it here.

        That's because the MX-5 is a luxury purchase (not luxury car) and is rarely used as a daily driver, but rather an extra car. Those who can usually afford a second car as a toy are usually those who are financially established and are in the late 40's thru early 60's. Look at the buyers of Porsche Boxters, Z4's, S2000's (when they were new), and any other roadster on the market...

        I bought my first when I was in my early 30's, and I have my second now in my late 40's. Hopefully I will still by driving one and shifting my own gears in my 60's.

      Better be careful with that hood. It looks like it's getting awful close to reminding people of an SLK's hood proportions, which would be bad news. I think it'll be fine though. Can't wait!

      Longer and wider! If it is longer and wider, it is likely heavier. If it is heavier it will need a bigger and more powerful engine. Therefore will need bigger brakes, heavier suspension, bigger heavier tires and wheels. The very concept of the light, tossable Miata would be gone. Shame.

        How were the sales for that light tossable Miata? Now let's say Miata was not a drop top but a Coupe......did you not just describe a BR-Z FR-S type of a car....................last time i checked those sold like crazy. There are 2 on my block alone, i see those in Brooklyn all the time. So Mazda has to build a car that no one wants and that you will never buy just to fit you distorted view of what a car should be.

At its peak, the first generation sold nearly 3x the number of units as the third generation. You actually have to take the numbers year by year to arrive at the conclusion that the Miata is "the best selling sports car in history"... Otherwise the Corvette has no doubt sold more in its 60 years of production. At the peak of its sales figures (1979, of all years), it still only sold 2/3 of what the Miata sold at its peak. S2000? That was just a little bigger, had more power, better brakes... Didn't even come close in sales figures. ...One could go on... It's not that the current MX-5 isn't a good car... There's a common sentiment you'll see repeated when people ask which Miata generation is "best": the newer versions are better cars, but the NA (original) is a better Miata. Between the sales of the original Miata and more recently the sales of the FR-S / BRZ there's definitely reason to believe that a Miata that brought back the "formula" that made the original a success would be marketable.

          I think you probably want to wait a couple years before we start making conclusions based on the FR-S/BR-Z sales. Anytime you come out with a new affordable sports car, sales are going to be high, especially when there isn't a similar car in the market and hasn't been for many years.

        Mazda has already said they are benchmarking 2200 lbs for the new one, so don't fret yet. At they very least, it's likely to be lighter than the current model.

        Like it didn't already need a better suspension, wider tires, and a more powerful engine. *rolleyes* All those things were a requirement one way or another, and the Corvette Stingray has a massive engine and massive tires etc and is not that heavy and extremely tossable. Scale that down to even this tiny size with a four-banger and there is no way its considered a hog by anyone.
