In an unusual move, Chrysler is idling its recently hired second shift of 2014 Jeep Cherokee builders because, Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson said in a statement, it already has built the "critical number of vehicles we need to stock dealerships once containment is released," Automotive News reports.

After the "critical" 9,430 Cherokees were built, the layoff was enacted so as not to strain the automaker's logistics partners before the Cherokee is actually released. Chrysler says the temporary layoff will last about two weeks, with 500 workers out of work and another 600 reassigned at the Toledo Assembly Complex where the sports utility vehicle was being built. The second-shift workers were hired on August 19.

Chrysler previously insisted that it would release the Cherokee to dealerships by the end of the third quarter, and it initially planned to start selling the SUVs in mid-August. Apparently the Cherokee needed a software fix before hitting showrooms, which is how Chrysler explains why the release schedule is out of whack. We're thinking that this software fix addresses the "powertrain calibration" issue that delayed the first media test drives of the model. According to the Toledo Blade, Chrysler has admitted it is doing "extended quality validation testing" but refused to provide more information.

Automotive News quotes Tinson as saying that Cherokees haven't been released to dealerships yet, but that she promises it plans to do so before the end of the third quarter – which is next Monday.

      Dart if light years better than Caliber and Cherokee will be far better Compass so I would say Fiat-Chrysler is better than Daimler Chrysler.

      I'm crossing my fingers for an emergency nose job. Please please Please! Other than looks the Cherokee still fits my needs, better than its competitors. the 4500 lb towing capacity and decent gas mileage while doing so mean a lot to me. Just because I need to tow a boat, doesn't mean I want to drive a full sized one around town. The grand Cherokee is great with the pentastar engine, but I don't need the larger vehicle, or the increased price.

        Mike, take it from me, I saw the Cherokee in person, it looks good in person and that look will grow on you when you see a few others on the road. Buy it and you will become a fan of that bold new look that sets it apart from the cookie cutter competition. At least test drive it and decide.

        It only gets great mileage with the FWD version. AWD versions get only standard CUV mileage. Even with the 9-speed auto. I have heard from somewhere that it will get a 5-speed manual of sorts outside of America, though - no word there. Just something to think about.

Jeep Senior Suspension Engineer Bob Sheaves noted that the XJ Cherokee was praised during its time by critics for its superior ride, 'despite' the use of an antique suspension design, when some of its SUV competitors are already riding on IFS - none of the critics had guessed that it was the solid axle suspension that was responsible for this. Bob Sheaves also said they haven't even tapped the full potential of the suspension - the rear still even come with leaf springs, for instance. It is very unlikely, however, that Jeep will bring back a modern incarnation of the XJ Cherokee... and to add insult to injury, they've slapped on the name on something not even remotely close. These are decisions based entirely on chasing short-term profits, without the foresight of long-term brand implications.

          @BIll Burke, first I demand outstanding off-road ability that is to be expected from the vehicle Cherokee, not just 'better than the competition', which this vehicle can barely provide. And I never complained about the mileage. I was just telling Michael that if he wants the better mileage, go for the FWD version - especially if you won't need AWD.

          First you demand outstanding off road ability and Jeep Cherokee delivers for almost any consumer's expectation. Then you complain about gas mileage being only the same as the best in class with the drive train that this capability demands. Lets face it, you are not a fan of the new Cherokee and are reaching deep into the well of complaints and objections for some validation of a deeply biased argument. Just don't buy the darn thing and let it go there.

          Yes, the New Cherokee will be better off road than a RAV4. But it will be destroyed by any regular SUV or Truck. It doesn't matter what it looks like or if it is a unibody or full frame. Give it solid axles and keep it to under 3500lbs and we will talk. And dont tell me that solid axles ride rough because there are a lot of full sized SUVs that still ride on them are they are plenty nice. Or if you think Jeep really wants to be innovative and not steal sails from the Wrangler, change the Trailhawk into a high speed desert runner like the Raptor.

          Show me a cuv with a similar tow rating and price point. It's a fine line and it was my dads reason for getting 2 grand Cherokees with straight 6 engines. In a world of V8's they offered slightly better mileage and a tow rating of 5,000. I'd love 27 mpg HW from something that tows 4,500 and has AWD.

        Only thing that doesn't look like the other 100 CUVs (corrected) on the market is the front, which is hideous. The side profile is generic and yawn-inducing, while the rear screams "I like big butts and I cannot lie." A proper, revived Cherokee, will actually look like nothing else. It's somewhat boxy shape will stand out in a sea of curves.

      This is literally the SAME exact language used when the Aztek came out. More or less "Don't judge a book by its cover." Even Gilles is retweeting people that say "I hated it at first...now I'm buying one." History repeating itself and Chrysler thinks this time it will end differently? Yikes.

      This is the second FUBAR for Marchionne. The first one being the Dart. It looks like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge (RAM) pickup are the only things saving Chrysler. Without Chrysler FIAT would have been toast by now.

      I got an idea... Lets take an Italian design, put some American cues on it, give it a Korean 4 cylinder, and mate it to a German transmission. Before you purchase, please be sure your local dealer has a good reputation regarding warranty work.

        The "World" I4 was developed in synergy by Chrysler, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai. Chrysler has been working to further refine the mill for its own vehicles, so I say it's entirely fair to call Chrysler's variant a "Chrysler" (and thus American) motor. Mitsubishi and Hyundai have their own tunes and can be referred to as Japanese and Korean, respectively. Similarly, this Cherokee is based on the Dodge Dart, which is an Americanization (stretching, reinforcing, tuning) of an Italian chassis. Note that a chassis is simply a rough blueprint, and thus Chrysler's "Americanization" of this chassis makes it fair to call it a Chrysler platform (given the extent of the modifications they made to the original chassis). The transmission is admittedly a German design, but at least it is being built and fine-tuned by Chrysler in America. I reckon it comes down to how fundamental of degree you come down to, but I personally see this vehicle as primarily American.
