What do you do when you're an automaker with an all-new and brand-defining sports car, one of them with a supercharged V8 cranking out 495 horsepower? You let proven race drivers test them out on track and on the road.

And what do you do if you're Jaguar and you're in that situation? Why, naturally, you make a video of it. That's how we get footage of racers Martin Brundle, Justin Bell and Christian Danner being choppered into the UK's Snetterton track to test the V6-equipped Jaguar F-Type S prototype. Then when they're finished with kerb-lined apexes, they take the V8 S prototype out onto the roads to run it through hedge-lined apexes.

According to one of them, "very fast, very nimble, great engine" is what will soon be headed our way. Check it out in the video below.

JAGUAR F-TYPE: DYNAMIC DEVELOPMENT MILESTONE

(MAHWAH, N.J.) - December 14, 2012 - The Jaguar F-TYPE has undergone its first dynamic challenge outside of Jaguar's internal development program, following an invitation to three world-renowned drivers – Martin Brundle, Christian Danner and Justin Bell – to put both 380hp V6 and 495hp V8 prototype models to the test.

In cold and challenging conditions at the UK's Snetterton 300 circuit and on the surrounding Norfolk roads, the trio of international racing drivers and television presenters – resident in the UK, Germany and the US – were able to experience the F-TYPE's performance in full.

Their efforts were witnessed by Mike Cross, Chief Engineer Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar, the man who has directed the team which has worked tirelessly to ensure the F-TYPE delivers a truly rewarding sports car driving experience.

"It's been a fascinating day," said Mike. "The entire F-TYPE development program has, from a vehicle development perspective, been focused on delivering a connected sports car driving experience. To witness three respected drivers take to the track and to hear their positive comments validate that our work has been great."

The camouflaged prototype F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S models provided for the test were fully representative of production intent from a dynamic and powertrain perspective. The 380hp F-TYPE S covers the 0-60 mph sprint in 4.8 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds) and has an electronically limited top speed of 171 mph (275km/h). Corresponding headline figures for the F-TYPE V8 S are 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds) and an electronically limited top speed of 186 mph (300km/h). Both feature all-aluminum construction, Adaptive Dynamics suspension and an Active Exhaust system.

F-TYPE: Launched at this year's Paris Auto Show, the all-aluminum F-TYPE represents a return to Jaguar's heartland: a two-seater, convertible sports car focused on performance, agility and driver involvement. Three models are available – F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and the F-TYPE V8 S. They are powered respectively by Jaguar's new 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine in 340hp and 380hp outputs and its 5.0-liter V8 supercharged producing 495hp.

Martin Brundle: Following a 13-year career in Formula 1, in 1997 Martin Brundle began a second successful career as television commentator and today is the expert face of F1 for Sky Sports. In addition to his F1 driving career, Martin raced very successfully for Jaguar in World Sports Cars, taking the driver's crown in 1988 and victory at Le Mans in 1990.

Christian Danner: The winner of the first Formula 3000 championship, Christian Danner went on to race in F1, Indycars and touring cars – winning both the Spa and Nürburgring 24-hour races in 1992. He is the F2 lap-record holder at the Nürburgring and today he commentates on Formula 1 for German TV channel RTL.

Justin Bell: After beginning his competition career on two wheels, Justin Bell switched to cars in 1988 and has since raced for many car manufacturers, winning the 1997 World FIA GT2 Championship in a Dodge Viper with a 1998 GT2 Class win at Le Mans in the same car. Today, resident in the US, Justin works for a variety of TV outlets.

      Nice video. One thing that concerned me was the weight of the convertible, that is until I saw it in person at the car show. Now I "get it." Why? It just looks more on par with the new 911 in terms of road presence and scale. Call me silly, but it just looks like "more car" than the boxster/cayman, on top of looking more stylish and luxurious. It is bigger than the boxster/cayman platform, which, as nice as they are, will always be a little dinky compared to the 911. Hey, I know, that's a great little car! But it will always be the Porsche that screams, "Look, I just couldn't afford the 911." (I'm going to get so many downvotes for that, even though I like Porsche.) Now that I saw it in person, I can say that Jaguar accomplished what they set out to achieve with this design. They didn't want to play against the boxster and Z4 alone. They wanted to steal some 911 customers and make sure that if you parked your F-Type next to a 911, you wouldn't "feel" like you had a lesser luxury sports car. In fact, it feels just right and just different enough to spark a rivalry, even if there isn't one--yet. So if the coupe comes in around 3200-3300 lbs with the 6-spd manual, then I may be sold. When you look at it that way, the $69-90k price tag looks like a steal.

        Now that you put it that way I'm starting to see what you mean. I just hope you're right about the weight of the coupe. For the first gen of any car, this would be a good start. A lightweight "Goodwood" edition coupe with a manual, say around 3200lbs., would be nice to see down the road.

        You point to exactly why it's a shame to some of us: Jag made it a GT instead of a sports car. I had a 370Z. Now I have a Datsun roadster. Guess which one is a million times more fun? The smaller car. For bench drivers, the numbers are all that matters, but the numbers do not equate to fun. In fact, almost every review of the new Boxster says it's a better driver's car than the new 911. I don't know about you, but I like actually driving cars, not standing next to them. After all, if you need something to help you feel adequate, full sized trucks are a steal right now.

          The 370Z is recognized by every automotive publication as a fun-to-drive yet slightly flawed 2-seat sportscar that is far more affordable than the most of the competition. And it weighs nearly 3400lbs, or 3500+ as a convertible. The new Porsche 911 Carrera weighs in very nicely around 3250lbs., 3350 as the Carrera S, and will be around 100lbs heavier as a convertible. So welcome to 2013, imag. Given all of the safety equipment and pedestrian crash standards, this Jaguar sits right around that class, especially in V6 trim. Especially for version 1.0. Jaguar knows their customers are still looking for a svelt ride. I'm talking about design scale and presence while you're in it, driving the car, WHILE STILL BEING A JAGUAR, NOT A PORSCHE. If you like the Porsche so much, please go buy one and be happy. Don't worry your head so much about the F-Type, imag. This is just the first iteration, version 1.0. I'm sure Jaguar will find ways to reduce weight further as they develop this chassis over time. If sales are good, then perhaps Jaguar will release a "lightweight" racer as it did in the '60s. There, feel better now, imag? BTW, no one said anything about needing a bigger car to feel adequate. Those are your words, and therefore your sentiment, and therefore your personal issue, imag. Now please do us all a little favor, OK? Lighten up a little and have a beer. You could definitely use one. It's the holiday season, afterall. Cheers!

        Agreed. But I think it is their "lack of invasive leadership" that is working. i.e. Tata decided to take a hands-off approach and let Jaguar and Land Rover top managements chart their own courses to success. Not many parent companies would do that, especially if they are pouring billions of dollars into the brands.

      With just a little vision, you can already imagine the coupe version--very similar to the C-X16 Concept--only with the 550PS version of the 5-litre SCV8 found in the XF-RS, only with a 6-speed manual and a carbon ceramic brake option. Oh sure, the name will become downright silly, the F-Type R-S or something like that, but it will surely give the 3,704-3,814lb. Aston Martin Vantage V12 a run for the money. Hey c'mon, it's Christmas, I need to dream a little.

      This car is absolutely beautiful. Stunning, actually. All Jaguar needs to do is create a direct C Class, 3 Series, A4 competitor and they'll have a really nice lineup. If you asked me, I would have gone with the small sedan first, then the F Type as this isn't going to be a high volume vehicle.

      So basically the supercharged F-Type has similar performance and more weight than a RWD V6 370Z, a car which is based upon the same platform as mid-sized sedans and SUVs, and which costs less than half the price. So what the heck is Jaguar doing here? Why is this aluminum wonder so fat? It looks gorgeous, but the weight is a serious issue.

        Significantly more performance with the standard supercharged engines for the Jaguar, especially with the big flat torque curves they provide. And about the same weight for both convertibles. Here's some data for perspective: A 2012 Nissan 370Z weighs 3,374lbs. The convertible 370Z weighs 3,459lbs. It has no forced induction system and is allowed much more NVH for customersto feel than a Jaguar. The 370Z makes 332hp and "only" 270ft-lbs of torque (really not bad for a NA V6), yet they still are a lot of fun. I've driven one for a few days and it's not really my style, but it is fun and some people rave about them especially for the price. With more power and torque, the F-Type will only be better. Now, a convertible usually weighs 100-200lbs more than the fixed head version of any car. So the F-Type S coupe with the V8 should run neck and neck with Aston's Vantage.

          I *know* what the data is, which is why I wrote what I wrote. The Jag weighs 3,514, which is more than the convertible Z. I'm not an idiot - I realize that the F-Type has a supercharger and sound deadening. But it's an all-aluminum car, and it weighs too damned much to call itself a sports car. I owned a 370Z, and it was too fat. Yes, people who only care about numbers will call it sporty. But fast does not equal fun or sporty, and horsepower does not make up for weight. I am NOT saying that the Z is a comparable car, but that it shows why the Jag does not, to me, live up to the price or Jaguar's sporting history.

      I really don't like that front bumper treatment. The split "gill" intakes on either side of the grille are aggressive but really keep this car from being beautiful. I LOVE the fault deck though. And I normally don't like a flat rear end ;-) Sounds incredible, but why do they weigh so much?
