The BMW i8 is still dashing through the snow on its way to a 2013 debut, and getting more revealing as it does so. The outline of the kidney grille has opened up a bit, and the outline of a Hoffmeister kink has been placed at the rear of the side windows. The door handles appear to have moved off the doors themselves to a spot behind the door shutline. It's too early to tell definitively, but the new door handle location and the lack of the once-plain gap at the A-pillar lead us to believe that the butterfly openings are gone for good.

The plug-in hybrid i8 is expected to pair a 1.5-liter three-cylinder driving the rear wheels with an electric motor driving the front, the combined output predicted at 393 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Assuming its weight really does come in at 3,125 pounds, it will have a 20-mile all-electric range, a top speed of 156 miles per hour, and get from zero to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Check it out in the high-res gallery of spy shots above.

Too bad they couldn't keep the glass doors. That was my favorite design feature on the i series.

How can a major manufacturer like BMW be prototyping a car that underperforms it's main rival in every measure? Tesla have really kicked the German luxury manufacturers ass this time. So disappointing from BMW.

The Model S is an rear wheel drive all electric sedan while the i8 is a plugin hybrid Coupe using a odd 4 wheel power train with the electric motors powering the front and the IC engine powering the rear wheels with 50/50 weight distribution. The Model S is a sports sedan the i8 is a hybrid Grand tourer Coupe not the same market

BMW has decades behind it... they could (do) make crap spectacular every year without notice from the general public. Does it say BMW on the hood? People will buy it.

Anything a teabagger doesn't like is a "jihad" now. They like to lump everything they're afraid of into one convenient pile.

Low power, horrible electric range, lackluster looks... this thing is on track to be a phenomenal failure.
