Nevada has officially granted Google a license to test autonomous vehicles on public streets. The tech giant underwent demonstrations in both Las Vegas and Carson City to prove its vehicles are as safe or safer than those piloted by mere humans. The state requires two people to be in the test vehicles at all times, including at one occupant in the driver's seat and another monitoring the vehicle via an onboard computer. If anything goes wrong, the human "driver" can take over by simply applying the brakes or taking hold of the steering wheel.

As of right now, Google has only applied to license three vehicles. Each one will carry a red license plate with an infinity symbol. According to Bruce Breslow, Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles director, vehicles with autonomous capability could be on the road within three to five years. When that happens, the machines will wear green plates.

      Stephen Hawking's show just covered this car tonight. Nice episode, and went into what I thought about first...interaction with other cars/drivers. Seems like the thing is programmed to work with other cars, let them merge, turn into your lane, etc. without a hint of road rage. Probably uses turn signals too. So....already doing better than most of the people I see on roads today.

      I can't wait for the day that I can request a car through my smartphone and it will come pick me up and take me where I want to go while I can read or something. That is, as long as I can still take my Miata for a spin later. Autonomous cars will be great, as long as they're optional.

      **sarcasm** Ugh, who wants to operate a car on their own anyway? I mean, taking responsibility for getting yourself where you want to go and making sure you get there safely on your own is soooooo last century. My time is too important for such a trivial task. With a car driving ME around, I can keep updating my blogs, work on my Facebook page, and keep punching out those 140 character ramblings that are all about ME. It's always about me now. I can't take the time to drive because I have work to do. I need to keep marketing myself 24/7! ME ME ME ME ME ME ME!!! Seriously, if driving is too much work for you then take the damn bus.

        I'm convinced Google is working on these cars, simply so we have more time to look at Google Ads.

        **sarcasm** Ugh, who wants to wash their clothes on their own anyway? I mean, taking responsibility for soaking clothes, scrubbing them, rinsing them, hanging them to dry, and making sure the stains are gone is soooooo last century. My time is too important for such a trivial task. With a car driving ME around, I can be on Autoblog, pretending to be an "expert" on what kind of cars people need, keep making stupid comments about people who don't think like ME. I can't take the time to wash my clothes because I have work to do. I need to keep rambling about myself 24/7! ME ME ME ME ME ME ME!!! Seriously, if laundry is too much work for you then take the clothes to a damn dry cleaner. In essense, if you use a washing machine but think self driving car is a stupid idea, you sir are a hypocritical, low self esteem douchebag.

      If Google just got legal approval for it's self driving car to be "driven" on public roads & streets in Nevada, does that mean all of the testing done so far covertly across the country has been technically illegal?

        @EJD1984
        Can't be illegal as long as the car is licensed to be driven by a person.
