Spy Shots: Audi S1 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Spy photographers have been training their lenses on upcoming Audi models as of late. Earlier, we got a look at the R8 GT Spyder, and now those cameras have captured the S1 hot hatch. Though it may look like a standard Audi A1, this mule is covering up S1 guts. What's the give-away? A set of large exhaust pipes planted in the rear end.

Rumor has it that the mill powering this sporty hatchback will pump out 270 horsepower. That energy will be sent out to all four corners courtesy of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Expect to see more aggressive bits of body work on the real S1 when it finally shows its face.

Great! Another fun, fast small car we can't drive in the US! That's the best!

You wrote exactly what i would have. It's crap that VW doesn't come out with this here in the US. Their reasoning to me doesn't make much since. Competition would be good. Mini vs. Fiat 500 vs. this. Why not? Options are great! Don't get me started on the Scirocco....

270hp? not a chance in hell. 270hp and 2500lbs would give the S1 superior power to weight to a 1 series M stomping TT-RS. Not going to happen. It'd be awesome. But no. 200 hp, awd, and 2500lbs will be spry enough, though I still have my doubts (given how audi stratifies their lineup) that they'd let it trounce the Golf-R and TT-S (which it should have nary an issue doing given it's lithe weight).

If' it's the 2.0T, it can be chipped up to 240+ :) I can't imagine that torque in such a light car.

Not impossible, although more likely closer to 250 than 270. Don't forget that the TT-RS, the S3 and the Golf R are all about to be changed in 2012/2013, about the same time that the S1 would come out, and all would have 300+ hp. Besides, the S1 would aim directly at the JCW mini cooper, and you can't beat that thing with the added weight of AWD and less power.

yes. still impossible. If you understand ANYTHING of the way audi and vw stratify their models you'll implicitly 'get' that they won't be releasing anything with TT-RS levels of performance for sub A3 money. That's beyond silly. Added weight and less power? Might want to do a bit of research. The stock A1 is several hundred lbs lighter than a JCW mini cooper. With a 200lb awd penalty it's still... several hundred lbs lighter. So, several hundred lbs lighter with the added weight of awd (and this is a common thread in the vw/mini and audi/bmw world now that bmw doesn't give a damn about weight) means 185hp matching the polo will be more then sufficient to allow it to beat the JCW mini cooper. AWD>FWD. AWD+200lb weight savings > FWD. AWD+200lb weight savings and 185hp>FWD and 200hp. In the world of 2011 with A1's and 500's routinely hitting market hundreds and hundreds of lbs lighter than the new mini none of this should be news or shock anyone.

Yeah, the A1 shares the VW Polo platform afaik. The Polo GTI "only" has a 1.4L engine which makes 180 HP. I doubt an Audi S-line model will have 50% more HP than a GTI.

          @Codeman
There already is an A1 with the same 1.4L engine putting out 185 hp. So the S1 should be a fair bit better than this to differentiate itself.

There are a fair few A1s about now, and they look smarter without the vile coloured A posts. The great attraction of these otherwise rather dull cars is that they are QUIET. A quiet car is a delight and worth looking twice at.

not loving the styling (especially profile) but 4WD, 270 hp in a small hatch sounds like and ideal winter in the snow.

It's a 2008 and on Mitsubishi Lancer GTS wanna-be. The Germans are jealous of Mitsubishi, I mean, look at the slant-angle of those headlights, that's all 2008+ Mitsubishi Lancer! And the mechanicals on the Mitsubishi are already set up for tightness in the turns. Don't waste your money on Audi, for crying out loud.

@Autoblog,i think this is the RS1 not the S1. there ain`t gonna be a S1, cause the S1 like the M1(BMW) are icons and their names won`t be sacrificed.

I like the A7/S7/RS7 in the background of the first pic. Assuming this is at an Audi Test Facility or something like it. A lot of Audi's and VW's in the back.

OH MY GOD, find another way to design your headlights and tail lights already, Audi. BMW, also looking at you. Other than that, this is a pretty good looking hatch.

So any new news on the USA's new (Audi) small car, the A3 Sedan?

The few sources I have found suggest 2013, which would mean 2014 for the S3/RS3, which is the one worth waiting for. Audi seems to suggest putting a 400+ HP version of their 2.5 TT-RS engine in it. I have never, ever considered pre-ordering a car before launch, but I would that one.

I've never been a huge hatch fan, but I like it. Keep it under 2500lbs, AWD and the 270hp engine... I could see myself replacing my aging M3 with it. Reminds me of the Volvo Polestar Hatch... another tempting but impossible dream. On another note, if they were to build it... I would hope they wouldn't put an idiotic price tag on it... hmm BMW here is looking at you 1M...
