AAA offers free Lyft rides to and from repair shops

Program is running in Maryland and cities in 5 other states

AAA has launched a new partnership with ride-hailing service Lyft to offer free rides to drivers who find themselves without the use of their car.

Under the program, AAA customers can get free Lyft rides to and from select AAA Car Care Centers, regardless of whether they have the Lyft app or a smartphone. It's done through Lyft's Concierge program and is currently operating in Maryland and certain cities in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. AAA had previously offered customers at its approved and affiliated repair shops complimentary shuttle rides to their destinations. AAA says the program is in response to demand from members for access to quick, hassle-free transportation.

It's touted as just the beginning of a partnership between the auto travel organization and Lyft to deliver innovative mobility options for AAA members and customers. Lyft and AAA's CSAA Insurance Group are already offering customers the option of receiving Lyft credits during the auto-insurance claim process under a pilot launched in early 2017 and now available throughout the insurer's 23-state and Washington, D.C., coverage area.

Separately, AAA recently found that relying on ride-hailing services like Lyft or Uber full-time for transportation costs more than twice as much as vehicle ownership, even in urban markets where the services are widely available and car ownership is especially expensive.
