The Chevrolet Cruze is, hands-down, the greatest success in recent history for General Motors. Now entering its third model year, the Cruze has been one of the company's top sellers in the United States, and GM has now committed to keeping production here through a second generation. According to MSN Money, the new 2015 Chevrolet Cruze will launch in the fall of 2014.

While relatively new to the U.S. market, the Cruze has been on sale globally since 2008. Our domestic Cruze is assembled at GM's Lordstown, Ohio, plant, which will be receiving a $220 million investment to ready it for the new model, according to GM. Upgrades to the nearby Parma stamping plant are included in that figure.

In its press release announcing the investment, GM indicated that this next-generation Cruze will be restyled and have improved fuel economy. The report speculates that this model will ride on a platform shared between compact cars and crossovers, one which will also underpin other Chevrolet vehicles including a new version of the Volt and Equinox.

GM Commits Next-Gen Chevrolet Cruze to Ohio Plants
Lordstown and Parma get $220 million investment and retain more than 5,000 jobs

DETROIT – General Motors will invest $220 million for tooling and equipment to build the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze in two northeast Ohio plants retaining more than 5,000 jobs at facilities in Lordstown and Parma.

The Lordstown Complex, with support from the metal center in the Cleveland suburb of Parma, has built more than 500,000 of Chevrolet's top-selling compact passenger sedan since production began in September 2010. More than 1.6 million Cruzes have been built globally since 2009.

"Thanks to northeast Ohio's supportive business climate, we're able to build on a great foundation and steer the Chevrolet Cruze into the next generation." GM Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones said. "A special thanks goes to Governor John Kasich and his team at Jobs Ohio for their strong leadership and advocacy for GM and our employees."

GM has invested more than $7.3 billion in its U.S. facilities since 2009.

Production timing of the next-generation Cruze will be announced later. But Jones said the new model will offer new exterior and interior styling, improved fuel economy and an improved interior compartment and more storage space. Preliminary work to clear space in the body shop at Lordstown has begun.

The 2012 Cruze is among the best-selling compacts in the United States and was named "America's Best Compact Car for the Money" by U.S. News and World Report.

In a joint statement, UAW Local 1112 Shop Chairman Ben Strickland and UAW Local 1714 Shop Chairman Will Adams credited the Lordstown Team. "The men and women of Lordstown are working hard to keep the Cruze a top-quality small car choice. The next-generation of the Cruze is well earned and we are thrilled to be assigned work that will keep good-paying next generation UAW jobs in the state of Ohio for years to come."

The Lordstown complex has built more than 14.6 million cars in the 46 years since it opened in April 1966.

In 2011, the Parma Metal Center shipped about 60 million parts and processed more than 1,000 tons of steel a day to serve the majority of GM vehicle lines produced in North America. Parma has more than 1,400 dies and can produce up to 100 million parts a year.

not every car is for everyone. the cruze is probably the best car in it's class. it amazes me the way people are so quick to critisize but hesitate to praise. all you people that want to see America prosper and see jobs in the US, keep buying your imports and sending american dollors overseas.

Well, you're going to get responses from people who think if they have a McDonald's in their town, their town is a meaningful player in the agriculture business.

The trouble is that this car is far from the best in its class. It's from before 2008 and jut brought over here to produce as a 'new model.' It is very uncomfortable and expensive for what you get. It has a minimal warranty and a not-so-great reputation for quality from its truely horrific predecessors, the Cobalt and Cavalier. That is a lot to overcome when competing against the excellent offerings from Korea, with huge warranties and exellent styling (some of which are made in the US), and the Japanese cars with well deserved reputations for reliability and build quality (many also built in the US). Then it has to compete with the other domestic brands. The Ford Focus just is a nicer car, and the new Dodge Dart looks just fantastic, particularly the interior. GM needs the new model NOW.

I do not understand why people are so negative about the Cobalt. I own one, have over 100,00- miles on it and I have only done routine maintenance on it. Sometimes I think people should talk to others who actually own a vehicle and not read reports from companies who are owned by rich investors.....

Good news all around. The new platform is lighter from what I've heard. It's good to see them working hard to improve an already good (but not the best) product. This also confirms rumors that the Equinox is getting smaller. Hopefully, that will make room for the next gen Colorado-based Trailblazer which would be awesome. GM, you're making some good moves here. Now get the Camaro to the Alpha platform, give the SS Sedan a real name, and get the Ute over here!

Now if only they could wise up and produce Chevy variants of their Holden models and build them in the US we could say GM are completely on the right track . I don't see why GM doesn't build Chevy varients of their Holden models for US sales and build them in the US !

What percentage of the Cruze is US based content? Now, if the US Government would get out of the car manufacturing business I might consider buying one.

You know it's a different GM, when they: 1) Replace a small car within four years 2) Don't change it's name 3) Continue to beat most imports on mileage.

and the Corolla is how old already? I'm pretty sure it has used the same platform for more than 10 years. 6 years old is not ancient.
