Terry Tamminen will take BMW Hydrogen 7 for a long ride

It's not only the A-listers (Brad Pitt, Jay Leno and Will Ferrell) that BMW is milking for some Hydrogen 7 publicity. The automaker has given the author of Lives Per Gallon (and strong hydrogen advocate) Terry Tamminen a BMW Hydrogen 7 to drive on public roads for a while. From the announcement (pasted after the jump), it seems that Tamminen will get the car for a longer time than the big celebs did. And, hey, look, his Hydrogen 7 is a black one, not silver like all the others we've seen.

If you're unfamiliar with Tamminen, I recommend taking the time to listed in a speech he gave at last year's Alt Car Expo, which we have archived here (scroll down). Tamminen has advised Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on energy and environmental issues and supports California's H2 highway proposal.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATE TERRY TAMMINEN SET TO DRIVE THE BMW HYDROGEN 7 ON U.S. ROADWAYS

Tamminen Joins Hollywood Heavyweights Jay Leno and Will Ferrell as Latest to be Given a BMW Hydrogen 7
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - September 24, 2007... BMW today announced that former California Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Terry Tamminen has become the latest person to receive keys to a BMW Hydrogen 7 - the first hydrogen-powered luxury sedan. An accomplished author and leading environmental strategist who has been widely recognized for his many contributions and achievements in the field, Tamminen also served as the Chief Policy Advisor to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on energy and environmental issues.

"I am excited to be given the opportunity to drive a BMW Hydrogen 7. For decades I've been fundamentally dedicated to examining ways we can protect our environment, and the BMW Hydrogen 7 is the vehicular representation of how we can begin to achieve this," said Tamminen. "The transition we must make towards driving independently of fossil fuels - and toward developing the infrastructure necessary for a mobile economy based on hydrogen - is extremely important, and I'm proud to help spread the word with the BMW Hydrogen 7."

Tamminen currently travels throughout the United States and the world, lecturing and providing private consulting services regarding a variety of climate and energy issues to a variety of high profile clients, including numerous U.S. Governors and world leaders in North America, Europe, and Australia. Now, when traveling by roadways, he can spread his message in his BMW Hydrogen 7. His latest book, Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction (Island Press), offers a timely examination of the world's dependence on oil and a strategy to evolve to more sustainable energy sources.

Tamminen was recently named the Cullman Senior Fellow and Director of the New America Foundation's Climate Policy Program. He has co-founded numerous environmental protection and preservation organizations, including the Santa Monica BayKeeper; the Waterkeeper programs in San Diego, Orange County, Ventura and Santa Barbara; and the Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic at the School of Law, University of California Los Angeles.

Running in hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapor, representing a major step in reducing harmful CO2 emissions. It is not a concept car, but a production model vehicle that has successfully completed the entire Product Development Process. While the BMW Hydrogen 7 is not for sale, it is considered to be a milestone in bringing forward hydrogen as the sustainable fuel for individual transportation.

BMW believes that hydrogen will replace petroleum as the long-term alternative to fossil fuel, and hopes the Hydrogen 7 will play a pioneering role in driving forward the hydrogen technologies that will ensure our mobility in the future. Through a program dubbed the Hydrogen 7 Pioneers Program, BMW is giving industry leaders and prominent figures in entertainment, politics, business and more a BMW Hydrogen 7 for their daily use.

Tamminen is one of the first Americans who BMW plans to announce in the coming months that will help the company in its mission to build widespread support of hydrogen as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. By harnessing the power and influence of individuals who, like Tamminen, are at the forefront of their respective disciplines, BMW hopes to continue to generate support of hydrogen-drive vehicles in the short term and stimulate demand for a viable hydrogen infrastructure in the long-term.

While Tamminen and BMW's hydrogen pioneers will be the first group to be given access to the BMW Hydrogen 7 in the U.S. for a longer period of use, a number of entertainers, politicians, business leaders and more have opted for a BMW Hydrogen 7 as their energy-efficient ride of choice. Those who have recently chosen the vehicle include Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at the "Ocean's 13" premiere in Hollywood; Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Liguori at the FOX All-Star Party in Santa Monica; Richard Gere and Sharon Stone at the Cinema for Peace Gala in Berlin; and "An Inconvenient Truth" producer Davis Guggenheim (Oscar® for the best Documentary Feature) and Best Foreign Language Film Oscar® winner, director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck at the 2007 Academy Awards; among others. The vehicle has also made an impact oversees, with luminaries such as Michael Glos, German Federal Minister for Economy and Technology, and Günter Verheugen, Vice President of the European Commission, world renowned soprano Anna Netrebko and many others covering more than 1.3 million miles worldwide till now.
