UPDATE: The 5 Series prototype seen in these photos is previewing a new generation of wagon for the model, not simply a mid-cycle refresh. The text has been updated to reflect this.

With a debut in 2009, it's high time that BMW delivered the world with the next generation of its popular 5 Series. While we aren't expecting to see it here in the United States, that changeover will include the vehicle shown above, the 5 Series wagon.

This is only the second time we've spotted the camo'd, long-roof 5er in the past year, and while it was chained to a flat-bed in those snaps, today, we can see it lapping the Nürburgring. In addition to the images from the track, we also have our first look at the cabin of the 5 Series, although even it is covered in camouflage, making it quite difficult to spot anything of substance.

As for the exterior, expect modest changes for the new 5er, with typical tweaks like new headlights and taillights, and perhaps a freshened front fascia. Considering we last saw the upcoming 5 Series just over a year ago, we'd expect an auto show debut for this smoothed-over model in the not-so-distant future, with Paris a leading candidate.

I hate the term 'grocery getter' for a wagon. You can get your groceries on an effing bike if you so wished. It's a disparaging term. I like 'hauler" as in hauls ass especially an E63 AMG wagon.

What is this article, a left-over from 2012? The F10 has long since had its mid-life refresh and AFAIK the F11 (the model designation for the 5-series wagon, folks, did you know that?) along with it. The pictured car is a future replacement next gen.

Correct, it's not the F10. This is an advanced test mule in being that it uses not only the G31 chassis, but also the G30 fascia on an F11 body. The mule interior is from the current F01 7-Series, as the first real G30 prototypes are due later and not yet ready.

Seriously Autoblog. The "mid-cycle" refresh of the F10/F11 has been IN SHOWROOMS FOR A YEAR. You're looking at a next-gen G11 wagon, which won't see U.S. release. But it will be available mid-2016. So embarrassed for you guys at Autoblog. Publish a correction and save some face!

You are actually somewhat incorrect about the G31, but I agree with your general message greatly. This is a G31 chassis and fascia, on an F11 body. The level of errors and un-professionalism here is appalling.

Well, it's good to see for once, that all of you are now taking notice on what I've complained about for a very long time. Terrible research, ignorant, grossly biased, nonfactual, and misleading commentary. Then again I'm just a frequently down-voted, nitpicky pedant, right? A reason I'd rather not and now no longer waste my free time on AB, with unfortunate "fanboy politics", hive mentality, and rampant sock puppetry on the regular. Back to the BMW: This vehicle being tested is the G31 5er chassis, components, and front section in an F11 5er LCI body. In essence, it's a test mule wearing the G30/31 front fascia. This mule is also using the F01 7 LCI interior. The first full G30/31 prototypes have yet to arrive until the autumn. Again, ALL of what I've stated regarding this test mule is 100% FACTUAL. If you want to stubbornly believe a "more valid" source, go right ahead then and stay clueless.

This is NOT an F10. This is the G30 5 series that debuts in 2016

Actually, you are right and a little bit wrong (well, not really). Not the F10, in being that's a saloon/sedan. This is the G30 front end and G31 chassis, on the body of an F11 LCI and with an F01 LCI interior (not F10). This all comes straight from BMW and not only me.
