Having aced the crash test from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and earning the highest rating of Top Safety Pick+, the 2014 Subaru Forester headed over to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a date with destruction. In the barrage of NHTSA tests, the new Forester met similar results as it did with the IIHS, earning a five-star overall crash rating.

Comparing these number to the previous model, which carried a four-star rating in all areas, the new Forester did much better in the side-impact test to earn a full five stars; frontal and rollover ratings were still at four stars like the old model, but the improved side crashworthiness was enough to gain the NHTSA's highest overall rating. The frontal impact video is posted below, but all the various test videos can be seen on NHTSA's website.

Juke, Murano, MKT, Santa Fe, Escape (IMO), smaller Jeeps are kinda boring, VW.... CRV is not great. Most small(er) SUV are surprisingly ugly right now, I think the Forester, while not "attractive" is at least interesting and does not have either a squinty look nor a gauping mouth

And the judges rates it, 4.9, 4.8, 5.1, 5.2, 4.9 But since its Subaru, its 5.2 If SAAB has it tested, its gonna be 6.0

I don't drive a Subaru but I recommend them to every friend looking for an AWD hauler and I hear nothing but good things from those friends. My one complaint is with every redesign they seem to get less attractive but perhaps that's part of their charm. :)

What - no 5.4 score like Tesla got? Why is it that Subaru (Forester) and Mitsubishi (Outlander & Outlander Sport) seem to be the only ones building really safe small SUVs. The new Nissan Rogue comes out next month and I hope as a brand new model that it does a lot better in the crash tests than the new Toyota Rav4 did.
