We love the classic baby blue and orange Gulf livery as much as anyone, but when everything from the Tata Nano to a DeLorean and even a racing-grade semi truck (okay, the semi is pretty cool...) is painted in the scheme, it might be time to give it a rest. With perhaps one notable exception: this Gulf Edition Morgan 3 Wheeler.

Not only does Morgan have a legitimate racing relationship with Gulf Oil in Le Mans-class racing, we just so happen to love the Morgan 3 Wheeler more than almost anything else on wheels... no matter what hue it's painted. Combine the two and you've got us drooling.

Morgan will build 100 commemorative Gulf Edition 3 Wheeler models, with a starting price of 29,162.50 pounds (plus Value Added Tax) in the UK – that's around $46,700 US. We're not sure how many examples will make it Stateside, but if we happened to be in the market for an in-your-face adrenaline rush on three wheels, we'd have our friendly neighborhood US distributor on speed dial.

3 WHEELER - GULF EDITION

The Morgan Nissan LMP2 built by Oak Racing has an open-cockpit and is an extreme sports car. Built specifically to race in the World Endurance Championship for Sports Cars it is the ultimate car in which an amateur can pit his skill against the professionals. Backed by an established team the amateur trains with pro race drivers. The races are at Le Mans for the 24 hours as well as Sebring, Silverstone, Spa and many new tracks built for Formula One. In sports car racing many drivers prefer an open cockpit vehicle over a coupe. This is because of a superior sense of speed and vision. The driver can develop a much closer bond with the car and feels safer because he can be more in control. This is synonymous with Morgan's attitude toward creating vehicles that provide both high performance and fun. The feeling is encapsulated by the familiar saying, "to drive by the seat of your pants".

The unique combination of economy and acceleration provided by the Morgan 3 Wheeler also reflects the performance of the Morgan Nissan LMP2 car which has an ultra efficient V8 engine combined with low overall weight and superb aerodynamics.

For all these reasons it seemed entirely correct to seek permission to release a Morgan 3 Wheeler in the striking Gulf Oil livery.

The striking Blue and Orange graphic, and the years of motorsport success it represents, adorn the new Morgan 3 Wheeler "Gulf Edition" for a run of 100 commemorative vehicles. These gulf cars will provide just the sense of excitement that comes from top level motorsport. Following its official international launch at this year's Motorcycle Live, the 3 Wheelers will be available to buy from your local Morgan 3 Wheeler dealer or direct from the factory.

I'm not sure why so much decidedly not awesome can be put together in one vehicle and result in pure awesome. This is so much more than the sum of it's parts. 3 wheeled cars - not awesome (don't believe look at the reliant robin) 2 cylinder motorcycle engines - no awesome... cool yes, but not awesome, 4 cylinder moto GP engines with over 200hp are awesome. spoked wheels requiring innertubes in todays world - not awesome... Morgan 3 wheeler... pure awesome. I wish i had the financial where with all, and lack of responsibility that would allow myself to purchase one of these.

If the company has no racing history with Gulf then it's idiotic despite looking cool. This looks cool and is not idiotic.
