A Mercedes-Benz product isn't officially launched until the release of rolling footage set to driving choral strains akin to O Fortuna. We can hereby report that the launch of the SLS AMG Black Series is done and dusted, the minute-long video below providing a soundtrack for the 622-horsepower coupe's recent announcement.

The SLS AMG Black Series will sit still for our own cameras during its world premiere at the 2012 LA Auto Show at the end of the month. Until then, you can get your fix of the lighter, stiffer, angrier, faster, 196-mph gullwing in moving pictures below.

Haters gonna hate on the bodykit... like they hated on the BMW 3.0 CSL kit or the BMW 2002 Turbo or the Ford Sierra Cosworth... after all, it's not a show-off thing, but a functional bodykit to improve driving dynamics. I doubt AMG would ever put something nonfunctional on their flagship car... just my two cents.

The 6.2 is a wonderful sounding engine. Fail for not putting the engine note in there.

Pathetic specs...I agree, a ZR1 is a much better buy. Plus it'll last longer

Basic rest of the world thinking: american cars=suck. ZR1 is a better BUY. Better PERFORMANCE VALUE. Not like someone who is looking at an SLS AMG black series is thinking about that

The ZR1 and the SLS play in completely different fields, so it's pointless to compare them That said, to call the ZR1 junk is to do a great disservice to one of the best performance buys of this decade. With numbers that humble almost anything at its price point (and many things costing a bit more, like the 911 Carrera S), the ZR1 is a huge accomplishment for the Corvette team.

who would have thought that Mercedes Benz, builder of some of the world's most elegant and desirable cars of their respective times, would ever put out a car that looks more kit-car and amateurishly styled than a '74 Bricklin. This car is a horror show from the hood to the trunk and everything in between.

Sadly I don't think the modern SLS will ever achieve the notoriety it set out to capture. Some wont agree, but if you research the pricing, the specs, and the total offerings found in the SLS, its quite mediocre for a super car.

The numbers tell only part of the story. The SLS is all about theater and flash. They had that one in the most recent Transformers movie and having that cute blonde girl getting out of those gullwing doors perfectly suited the car's intended appeal. It ain't a hardcore sports car, but it sure is a visceral thing nonetheless.

First AMG, then Black Series. What's next, Elite Supreme Deluxe? Car companies (in particular MB) are starting to piss me off with these useless renditions of their cars. Must be a lot of fools who fall for this crap, otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it.

Now this is much more like it...looks a lot better than the plain and frankly dull regular SLS
