The new BMW M5 is taking a one-week, 3,300-mile U.S. road trip, and not only will it tour the skeevy diners, restless rest areas and truck-stop toilets of this fine land, it'll eat up its tires on nine of our nation's finest tracks. If you think that sounds like the Tire Rack One Lap of America, you'd be correct.

In addition to providing the official vehicles for the event, the Munich firm is sending a team of drivers from its BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina to compete in the newly created 'Showroom Stock' category. This year's week-long race begins May 4 in South Bend, Indiana, and as with all the other entries, the M5 will get just one set of tires to test its gumption in various motorsports disciplines and thousands of highway miles. Follow the jump for a press release with more info and be sure to check out One Lap Of America's website for updates when the event kicks off in May.

BMW Announces Participation in the 2012 One Lap Of America.

(23.03.2012) -- Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 23, 2012... BMW of North America today announced that the all-new 560 horsepower 2013 M5 Sedan will participate in the grueling One Lap of America event starting May 4, 2012. Instructors from the BMW Performance Center, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, will drive the 3,300 mile tour that originates in South Bend, Indiana and incorporates highway, skid pad, drag strip, and closed course racing during the eight day event.

"The fifth generation M5 will compete for the new 'Showroom Stock' recognition within the Luxury Sedan class at One Lap of America, which serves as the perfect opportunity to demonstrate its performance capabilities as well as those of the BMW Performance Center instructors," said Dan Gubitosa, BMW Performance Center Manager. The new BMW M5 will arrive in authorized US BMW Centers in August of 2012. In addition, the BMW Performance Center will be providing the One Lap of America staff with official vehicles for 2012.

The BMW Performance Center is the home to BMW's Performance Driving School, the BMW Performance Center Delivery Program, the Zentrum museum featuring 95 years of BMW history and the Spartanburg production plant which produces the X3, X5, and X6 Sports Activity Vehicles. The BMW Performance Driving School offers a variety of driving classes that highlight the performance, responsiveness, and safety features in each BMW product. Driving schools are offered in 1 and 2 day formats. They include a Teen Driving School, Car Control School, M School, and Advanced M School. Exclusive corporate driving events are also offered in many variants ranging from half day programs to 3 day events with on track driving and offsite tours and excursions.

Wow, I just read the rules... This is, as far as I am concerned, the BEST organized class structure in motorsport. I can't wait to see how this turns out

Awesome... why aren't other manufacturers doing this? I'd love to see Porsche show up with a GT3 RS and Patrick Long...

Your response is the GTR, really? Had you said an e63 amg or cadillac ctsV i could see the comparison, but you pit a 2 door sports car vs a 4 door luxury performance car and predict the gtr to win, lol. You gotta let me borrow that crystal ball some time, i want to get next weeks lottery numbers. Seriously, try comparing apples to apples.
