Spy Shots: Ford Mustang Drag Racer – Click above for high-res image gallery

Our spy photographers have trained their expensive camera lenses on something very interesting. Caught running around one of Ford's private test tracks, this Mustang is clearly set to live life a quarter mile at a time. Out back sits a pair of massive Hoosier slicks, while up front, a set of skinny Hoosiers are tucked under the fenders. Oh right, we're not sure if you noticed, but there's a massive hood scoop planted on the front of this pony car.

What's going on under the hood? We don't know. The front-end (minus the scoop) is from a GT500, while the rear end is standard Mustang GT attire. That scoop, however, looks like it was pulled off a Donzi 22 Shelby GT speedboat. Actually, scratch that... it looks even bigger. Check out this possible next-generation Mustang Cobra Jet by clicking through the gallery below.

I'd like to ask everyone out there - What is the appeal of drag racing? Why do people find it so entertaining? Before any of you out there blast me - calling me stupid, make fun of me, or accuse me of being 'one of those people' who's into only the European road racing series - I ask so that I can understand the appeal, and what people are thinking in this sport. I'm just looking for insight, not wondering why, or how people could like it. We all have our own thing that we're into.

It's just the thrill of the race, the one upping the guy(or gal!) next to you...it's about bragging rights and go fast goodness...bottom line..it's a blast! Even to just watch!

Power. There is no way to effectively put down 2000hp in a road race car, but there are street cars running around that can dead hook 2000hp no problem. If you are into acceleration then nothing compares. If you are happy with a 70-150mph pull, then road racing is probably more your style. I live for drag racing, and love all of these factory drag cars.

I used to be into drag racing before I discovered that there are a whole 360 degrees to a G-circle... but there is still something to be said about screaming down the quarter mile with a massive amount of power at your command. Also, launching a car with just 300hp can be difficult when you're waiting for the tree to drop...I can't even imagine what its like to control 1000hp+ with your front wheels of the ground

No disrespect, but it appears there's very little driver skill in drag racing. Win or lose entirely on the mechanics' work. (You won't be able to reply directly to my comment, so best reply to MONTEGOD7SS.)

My guess is its not only the next ideration of the Cobra Jet, its also testing the viability of the new drivetrains for the Shelby GT500. Probably something like the new 6.2L Raptor engine with at least a 2.3 TVS blower on it. Probably 675hp with a dirty tune from the factory. The reason for the big ass hood scoop is partly fuctionality but also camoflage. Its a nice slight of hand move on Ford's part, everyone on the blogs is talking about the scoop and no one is really talking about the drivetrain. With a big hood like that you can try multiple engine configurations and not worry about fitment issues.

My thoughts as well. It's probably some sort of engine mule. It could be hiding a monster blower, a 6.2L Boss variant, or a really big inter -cooler.

The hood scoop's comical proportions remind me of those people who get bicep or calf implants

No, that would be the new Civic, or (insert Toyota sedan). It's only "aweless" in that it's devoid of stickers, badges, and fancy spoilers. I don't know the specifics of this thing, but if it is like any other dragster, more emphasis is placed on function as opposed to form.

I can imagine an old lady walking her small dog at a crosswalk, only to hear a brief whelp and chudder of the Mustang as she notices it got sucked into the intake and she's holding a frayed leash.
