Vehicles that are driven the most

Americans love to drive. In fact, the average American drives more than 13,000 miles each and every year, and the average 10-year-old car adds 11,987 miles to its odometer per year, according to iSeeCars.com. Some drivers, though, put a whole heck of a lot more miles on their vehicles than that.

The team from iSeeCars examined data from over 2.3 million used 10-year-old cars sold from 2015 to 2018. Heavy-duty pickup trucks, which also tend to rack up lots of miles since they are used for work and for towing, weren't included in this particular data set.

Without further ado, click on the image above to find out which vehicles tend to rack up the most miles.

The Chevy Suburban is the quintessential family SUV, with tons of space for people, packages, or anything else you can cram into its cavernous cargo hold.

“The Suburban is known for its expansive cargo room while comfortably seating up to nine passengers, which makes it popular for large families as well as for fleet and livery use,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. No wonder it racks up so many miles.

It makes sense that the GMC Yukon XL would show up right after the Chevy Suburban on this list. They are basically the same vehicle wearing different badges, and they both offer tons of storage for big families that like to travel.

Another big SUV. The Sequoia is the first Toyota you see on this list, but it won't be the last. As the Japanese automaker's largest SUV, we're not surprised that it racks up lots of miles.

The Honda Odyssey is the first of two minivans on the list, averaging more than 14,000 miles per year.

“Minivans offer more cargo space and better fuel efficiency than full-size SUVs, but lack towing capacity and all-weather performance,” said Ly. “Minivans are ideal for people who want extra cargo room and seating capacity, but don’t require a vehicle that performs like a truck.”

Fullsize SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe, though one size class down from the Suburban, are often favored by families who like to hit the road for vacation, and that means they are often sold on the used market with higher-than-average mileage.

Vehicles like the Tahoe are also often used by livery corporations for transporting people to and from airports and the like, and those vehicles are sure to rack up the miles.

The Honda Pilot is a bit of an outlier on this list. Whereas most of the SUVs that rack up big mileage are traditional body-on-frame 'utes with burly V8 engines, the Pilot is a unibody crossover with a more efficient V6. That reduced fuel bill equals meaningful savings for families who take extended road trips.

The Armada is the only Nissan to make the most-driven list. The Armada used to be based on Nissan's Titan pickup truck chassis but more recently switched to the version you see above, which shares its chassis with the overseas Patrol SUV. It will be interesting to see if it retains its high-mileage status as the years go by even with the change.

No surprise here. The largest passenger SUV that Ford builds is the only Blue Oval-badged vehicle on the high-mileage list.

One interesting side note: Ford no longer equips the Expedition with a V8 engine, instead opting for a twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost engine.

One of these things is not like the others. The Toyota Prius is the only vehicle on the high-mileage list that isn't either an SUV or minivan, and it's the only one that's sold primarily on its fuel-saving merits. We'd wager that a lot of high-mileage Prius hybrids are owned by ridesharing and taxi drivers.

“The Toyota Prius’ appearance on the list is not surprising given that hybrid vehicles are a popular and practical choice for high mileage drivers who want to save on fuel costs,” said Ly. “Despite initial longevity concerns, the Prius’ battery has been proven to last 12 to 15 years on average, which shows that it’s long-lasting to further add to its practicality.”

Rounding out our list of vehicles most likely to rack up high miles is the Toyota Land Cruiser, and we're not terribly surprised. Though it's pricey, Toyota's rugged SUV is known as one of the most longest-lasting and most durable vehicles all around the world.
