Australian actress Margot Robbie, in her role as Nissan's electric vehicle ambassador, says the Japanese automaker will unveil its new Formula E concept electric vehicle March 6 at the Geneva Motor Show.
The actress, nominated for an Academy Award for best lead actress for her role as figure skater Tonya Harding in the film "I, Tonya," made the announcement Monday in a Facebook Live event in which Nissan used a battery pack from the new 2018 Leaf to power the cameras, lights and other equipment.
Formula E announced in October that Nissan would join the electric-car race circuit for the 2018-19 season, which starts in October, with it later emerging that the company would replace its corporate cousin Renault. Nissan told Autoblog that the all-electric race circuit will give it a high-visibility platform to promote its Nissan Intelligent Mobility strategy.
Nissan announced its partnership with Robbie a year ago, releasing a video in which it put the actress in a helmet and behind the wheel of a BladeGlider - its on-again, off-again electric prototype -- on the streets of Monaco.
Last fall, Robbie announced the new Nissan Electric Ecosystem, plus three new sustainability pilot projects at Futures 3.0 in Oslo, Norway, that leverage Nissan's global workforce to broaden energy access and disaster relief. It's similar to what Tesla is doing with its energy storage systems in places like Puerto Rico and South Australia. She also starred in the video above, in which Nissan claims to have set the world record for heaviest tow by an electric vehicle, in this case an e-NV200 van.
"The world is going electric and technology is getting smarter," Robbie said in a statement. "Even the cameras today were powered using the Nissan Leaf - something I never thought a car would be able to do. It's crazy in a way, but it's another simple demonstration of how we can change the way we drive and live to create a cleaner and more sustainable world for everyone."
