GM is investing tens of millions to expand its Performance Build Center. The pinnacle of all the industrial giant's many powertrain plants around the world, the facility is located at the home of the Corvette in Bowling Green, KY. That's where it builds – and allows customers to build – the engine for the Corvette Z06, demand for which has prompted the expansion.
Previously located in Michigan, the Performance Build Center moved to Michigan early last year at a cost of $3.5 million. The workshop has traditionally handled production of the engines powering the most high-performance Corvettes, including the Grand Sport, ZR1, and Z06. It also previously produced the supercharged Northstar engine for the Cadillac STS-V and XLR-V, but since its relocation, it has focused exclusively on the 650-horsepower, supercharged LT4 engine in the current Z06, and the LS7 in the Camaro Z/28. It also hosts the Build Your Own Engine program that affords customers the opportunity to put together the engine in their own Z06 under the watchful eye of a skilled technician and at the cost of $5,000 (on top of the purchase price of the top-of-the-line Vette).
The $44-million investment will allow the workshop to expand, retool, and bring another three dozen employees on board, all with the aim of increasing its capacity. Along with the new paint shop and other upgrades announced earlier this year, the commitment to expanding the Performance Build Center brings GM's investment in the Bowling Green plant up to nearly half a billion. In a separate statement, GM has also announced another $127.4 million it's investing (and 127 new jobs it's creating) in its Bedford Casting Operations in Indiana, where it produces transmission casings, converter housings, cylinder heads, and small engine blocks for use in Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac models.

36 new jobs to support capacity increase

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – General Motors said Wednesday it will invest $44 million in the Bowling Green Assembly plant to support increased capacity in its Performance Build Center, adding 36 new jobs. Construction and tool re-arrangement is planned to start in January 2016.
The expansion of the Performance Build Center is fueled by the success of the Corvette Z06, which currently accounts for nearly a third of all Corvettes produced at Bowling Green Assembly.
The Performance Build Center also offers a one-of-a-kind experience for customers – the Build Your Own Engine program. This program allows customers to assemble the 650-hp supercharged LT4 engine for their cars. The $5,000 option package includes a full day with a Performance Build Center engine assembly technician who instructs and oversees the build, a personalized engine plaque identifying the customer and professional photography.
"Coupled with the investment, for $439 million for a new paint shop and facility upgrades announced in May, GM has committed $483 million to Bowling Green this year alone," said plant manager Kai Spande. "These significant investments indicate the company's confidence in Bowling Green, the Performance Build Center and our skilled workforce."
Construction took place in 2013 and early 2014, with engine production beginning in the second quarter of 2014. The Performance Build Center produces the 2016 LT4 6.2L V-8 for the Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
GM has added 316 new jobs and invested a total of $617.5 million over the last four years at Bowling Green.

BEDFORD, Ind. – General Motors will invest $127.4 million in powertrain and structural components to support production of new aluminum engine blocks and components at its Bedford Casting Operations, creating approximately 127 future jobs.
The plant currently has approximately 700 employees on three shifts and produces transmission casings, converter housings, heads, and small gas engine blocks used in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.
"This investment in the future recognizes the excellent workforce at Bedford Casting Operations" said Bedford Casting Operations Plant Manager Lamar Rucker. "It also demonstrates GM's collaboration with our UAW and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers partners, which reflects how we continue to bring new powertrain solutions to our customers."
Including today's investment, GM has invested more than $426 million in the Bedford plant since 2010.
So far in 2015, GM has announced more than $6.5 billion in U.S. facility investment, creating approximately 3,370 new jobs and securing the positions of 15,350 employees.
