The Renault Twizy became the first electric vehicle to be offered in the U.K.-based WhipCar peer-to-peer car-sharing service after two Twizy owners in London and Glasgow made their cars available for rent.

The Twizy vehicles will be available to rent for as low as 36 pounds ($57) a day. The cars are the first electric vehicles in the two-plug-year history of WhipCar, which has an owner inventory of about 19,000 vehicles across the U.K.

Last month, Renault said it would start testing Twizy EVs under a program called Twizy Way, which is being operated in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France, about 20 miles southwest of Paris. About 200 people are being allowed to sign up for access to the cars under the trial program, which will run through September and will be followed by a permanent program.

Renault started sales of the Twizy EV in France in March and debuted sales of the model in the U.K. the following month. The 17-horsepower Twizy, which tops out at 50 miles per hour, is 92 inches long, or about a foot shorter than the Smart ForTwo. Read more about the program in the press release below.

WhipCar embraces electric vehicles

WhipCar, the world's first neighbour-to-neighbour car rental service, has expanded its platform to embrace all-electric cars, it announced today.

The first all-electric vehicle to be listed on the WhipCar site is the "Twizy", the new fully electric urban compact two-seater from Renault that is fast gaining popularity across Europe.

Car owners in London and Glasgow are the first two people in the UK to put their newly purchased Twizy on WhipCar.com, now allowing their neighbours a unique opportunity to drive this fun and striking vehicle for as little as £36 per day.

The move comes as national transport body Carplus showcases the potential of using Car Clubs to facilitate greater uptake of electric vehicles in England and Renault itself gears up to launch a Twizy car-sharing programme this September in France.

Vinay Gupta, co-founder of WhipCar says:

"Many of our car owners are interested in hybrid and all-electric vehicles and have been asking us whether they can list such cars on the site. We're delighted to now be able to accept certain all-electric models and help car owners embrace new technologies while offsetting the cost of ownership.

"It's really satisfying to see our customers trust WhipCar to the point that they're willing to rent out their new cars on the site immediately. Increasingly customers are asking us what cars they should purchase because they want to ensure their car has rental value when it's not being used.

"We believe WhipCar is currently the only service in the UK where you can rent the new Twizy."

Filippo Adamo, a Twizy owner from London, comments:

"I bought my new Renault Twizy specifically to rent out. I've used WhipCar in the past and the experience has always been a very positive one . The Twizy is a really easy drive and does about 60 miles on a single charge. I've had a great deal of interest already from neighbours wanting to take it out for a quick spin."

Since its launch in London in April 2010, WhipCar has expanded nationwide and now has a presence in hundreds of towns across the country. 90% of Londoners can now find WhipCars to hire less than 10 minutes from their front door. Its ground-breaking service now has nearly 19,000 cars available for rental around the UK.
