There were some major debuts at this year's Beijing Auto Show, offering a peek into the future of automotive design and technology. Here are some of our favorites.
Lamborghini Urus
The Lamborghini Urus was one of the most exciting debuts at Beijing. Urus foretells of a new direction for the Lamborghini brand, as well as providing insight into a new shared SUV architecture among future Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. The design is easily recognizable as a Lambo and--unlike the Bentley EXP 9 F concept unveiled in Geneva--the Urus' design returned mass critic appeal.
When the Urus launches in 2015, it's said that a 600 hp engine will propel this super SUV. As for price, we suspect something over $200,000. Volume assumptions are in at 3,000 units per year, which is almost as much as Lambo's total output for the last three years. While details are still thin for this concept, it shows that sharp design is making its way into the SUV segment with stunning results. Just look at the Evoque.
Audi A6 L e-tron
Everywhere in China you'll see luxury cars familiar to European and North American drivers, however most of them are long wheel base variants. That's because the Chinese who can afford luxury don't want to drive, they want to be driven. We don't blame them, considering the large amounts of traffic. All that congestion leads to a major increase in emissions. Unless, of course, you're riding in a hybrid-electric like the stretched A6 e-tron that Audi brought to the show.
The A6 L e-tron will have an all-electric driving range of nearly 50 miles at speeds of up to 37 mph. Anything further or faster and the A6 L will rely on Audi's 2-liter turbo engine with 211 hp. New e-tron wheels look like jet turbines that are tuned for aero-efficiency and directing air to offer vehicle cooling. Another nice touch is the front grille, which has horizontal aluminum slats like those found on the R8 e-tron.
BMW i8 Spyder
We've brought you a decent amount of detail on the i8 in past episodes, but the i8 Spyder gives us even more of a clue as to what the finished product might look like. Many of the glass body panels from the original concept have been removed for a more production-ready look. Between this concept from BMW and the new NSX concpet debuted in Detroit, automakers are starting to reimagine what a supercar could be.
BMW says the i8 will be a plug-in hybrid with a 131 hp motor powering the front and a turbo 3-cylinder with 223 hp powering the rear. Altogether the i8 is said to reach 0-60 in under 5 seconds while returning an impressive 78 MPGe.
