Riding a "rocket trike" 2,500 miles to support a 100% green American grid

How far would you go to support a completely green electricity grid in the U.S.? Tom Weis thinks that 2,500 miles is about the right distance. That's how far he's riding – from Colorado to Washington, D.C. – in an electric-human hybrid vehicle nicknamed the rocket trike as part of a call for a national grid that is completely powered by renewable energy. That's a noble call, to be sure, but the big news here is that Weis is calling for all this to happen by 2020. Say when!?!

The ride's symbolism is hard to miss. Weis started his journey Saturday from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's wind technology center and will, "visit a dozen states to profile solar, wind, geothermal and efficiency solutions, as well as polluting energy problems like coal burning, nuclear power and mountaintop removal mining" on his way to D.C. If Weis isn't coming to a green energy center near you, you can support him through his online petition.

While impressive, completely eliminating coal and nuclear electricity production in the U.S. by 2020 will be difficult, to say the least. Weis compares the goal of a 100 percent green grid to the challenge President Kennedy issued for the U.S. to land a man on the Moon within a decade back in 1961. In a statement, Weis said:

The urgency of our economic and planetary meltdown demands a modern-day green energy 'moon shot' for America. We need a call to action from our President today challenging America to once again do something great. ... Nobody can tell me America can't do this. We have a long history of fresh, entrepreneurial thinking that uniquely suits us for this historic task. It is time for us to once again step up and help protect the world.

The president of Earth Policy Institute, Lester Brown, said in a statement that a green grid in ten years is actually achievable:

During World War II, America mobilized its resources at a stunning pace, leading the Allied Forces to victory in three-and-a-half short years. We need a similar, American-led green energy mobilization today to save civilization.

The ride began at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's wind technology center on Sunday, the 48th anniversary of a historic speech by President Kennedy calling on the U.S. to land a man on the Moon within a decade.
