Review: 2011 Mazda2

Mazda Perfects the Fun-to-Footprint Ratio Bigger used to mean better, but in the modern era, that old chestnut no longer applies. Mobile phones aren't the size of a brick, we can fit 2,000 songs in our pocket and this review was written on a computer that fits neatly on an airplane's tray table. Sometimes smaller is better, and here's a vehicle that proves it. While the 2011 Mazda2 might not be out to redefine the subcompact segment, it does offer something largely lacking from the rest of the pack: fun. But are Mazda's Zoom-Zoom driving dynamics enough to overlook its shortcomings... Read More

Spy Shots: 2015 Mazda2 spotted on the road
    1397571300

When Mazda unveiled the Hazumi Concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, our excitement for the next Mazda2 increased considerably. The Hazumi looks to retain much of the driving character that makes the current 2 one of the very best cars in its segment while infusing it with more aggressive styling. Of course, when the 2 arrives, it won't look exactly like ...

    1394309100

It looks like Toyota is going to have a little more zoom-zoom in the future. The giant Japanese automaker has struck a deal with Mazda to use its Skyactiv engines for the possible replacement to the Yaris. The new subcompact will be built under contract by Mazda at its new factory in Mexico. Keishi Egawa, CEO of Mazda in Mexico, told Automotive News that ...

Geneva: Mazda Hazumi Concept previews next Mazda2 in Geneva [w/videos]
    1393965600

The official photos of Mazda's Hazumi concept leaked out yesterday, but we have finally gotten to see it in real life at the Geneva Motor Show. Our view is that its Kodo lines looks as good on the diminutive car's sheet metal as they did in photos. The Hazumi was designed to appear to be bursting with energy, and it seems to deliver. While Mazda refuses ...

Report: Mazda Hazumi concept gets punchy, comes out of its corner early
    1393862280

The official images Mazda Hazumi concept, which previews the next-generation Mazda2, have leaked out from Chinese website Auto.sohu.com ahead of its debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The subcompact, four-door hatchback shows off Mazda's Kodo design language in its smallest size yet. Hazumi means "bound" or "spring up" in Japanese, and it is meant to ...

Report: Mazda Hazumi Concept shows up ahead of Geneva
    1393343940

Last week, Mazda officially teased its Geneva-bound Hazumi concept, showing little more than an aggressive headlamp design. But now, thanks to the magic of the Internet, another rendering of the Hazumi has appeared on the web, and, well, it's totes adorbs. In Mazda's original release from last week, we were told that the name "Hazumi" means "spring up" ...

Official: Mazda Hazumi concept presages next Mazda2
    1392992880

Looks like Mazda's big Geneva Motor Show debut is actually something quite small. Teased here, the Hazumi concept "points the way to the future" for the brand's subcompact offering, the Mazda2. Details are slim as of this writing, but from what we can see in the image above, the Hazumi will use the same Kodo design language found on the Mazda3, Mazda6 and ...

Report: Rumored Mazda CX-3 may not be for US
    1392758940

Mazda has used its Kodo design language to make some of the most attractive, affordable cars in the world right now, with the Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 (pictured above), but it still lacks a crossover in the smaller class, which are becoming popular on the world market. It seems like a natural fit then, that the Japanese company would shrink its CUV design ...

Every story dealing with a new rotary engine from Mazda lands in a different place on the matrix of possibilities between "Coming soon!" and "Never gonna happen!" In 2011 it was speculated that the rotary engineering program would be shut down with the demise of the RX-8, in 2012 the program was still alive and taking lessons from the SkyActiv engines, in ...

Report: Next-gen Mazda2 designed for 'predominantly feminine' appeal
    1385506800

We can't ever think of a time we've heard anyone accuse the current Mazda2 of being too edgy, which makes reports of a softer design for the next-gen model a little surprising. Autocar reports that when the new 2 debuts next fall, it will have a "softer, more feminine appeal" than the current design. This description lends a little more credibility to ...

Report: 2015 Mazda2 spotted in Japanese magazine
    1373981220

The styling changes at Mazda are proceeding at a fairly quick tempo. The CX-5 was unveiled, followed by a refreshed CX-9, the excellent Mazda6, and most recently a new Mazda3. This all happened over the course of less than two years, which in the auto industry is like a long week. Now the Mazda2 is getting its revamp. Thanks to a magazine scan from ...

    Report: Mazda1 under study
    1350660600

Small seems to be the big new trend among automakers, and Mazda is trying to decide if it wants a piece of the potentially huge tiny-car pie. The Mazda1 would slot beneath the company's B-segment Mazda2, says Mazda's GM of global sales and marketing, Yasuhiro Aoyama, and could might be ready for sale toward the end of this decade. Aoyama was interviewed ...

As with its platform-mate, the Ford Fiesta, the Mazda2 hasn't exactly made hay with the monthly sales numbers. Mazda Demio EV leasing begins in Japan in October
    1341857100

Looks like Mazda is going to do some "Zoom Zoom" of the quieter variety. The company will start leasing the Demio EV in Japan in October, as the Japanese automaker takes slow steps towards electric-drive-vehicle availability. The battery-electric version of the Demio, which sells as the Mazda2 in the U.S., will be made available to about 100 corporate ...

We love crazy promotional videos with hair-raising stunts that seem to defy gravity, and this particular spot certainly checks all those boxes. Mazda has teamed up with The Demon Drome crew to determine if its Mazda2 can successfully whirl around a motor drome. Official: Mazda previews hot MX-5 Miata Spyder and Turbo2 concepts for SEMA

Truth be told, we find most SEMA concepts to simply be gaudy aftermarket overkill. These two Mazda models, however – now these are something we'd like to sink our teeth into. Let's start with the MX-5 Miata Spyder concept. The most obvious alteration here is the removal of the stock MX-5's folding soft top (or hard top) for the sake of a stretched ...
