When Mazda unveiled the Hazumi Concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, our excitement for the next Mazda2 increased considerably. The Hazumi looks to retain much of the driving character that makes the current 2 one of the very best cars in its segment while infusing it with more aggressive styling. Of course, when the 2 arrives, it won't look exactly like the Hazumi. That's why these spy photos are so important.

This is our very first look at the next-generation 2, and although the Hazumi influence might be difficult to discern, thanks to the swirly camo, it's still there. The grille shape and the headlights are very similar in shape to the items shown on the concept, while the camouflage disguises the shape of the greenhouse, which looks somewhat like the Hazumi.

What we can't see, though, is under the hood. That's where our spies come in, reporting that a pair of 1.5-liter SkyActiv engines will see action in the tossable 2. The former, which we'll almost certainly see in the US, is a gas-powered mill found in the Euro-spec Mazda3. In the larger 3, it produces 99 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of torque, which is broadly similar to what the current 2's 1.5-liter pumps out. The other engine, a 1.5-liter SkyActiv diesel, probably won't be making the trip, although we'll continue to hope.

We should expect the next-gen 2 to arrive at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, with an on-sale date of early next year.

The lightest Fiesta comes in at 2578 lbs. and the current 2 comes in at 2306 lbs. (272 lbs. Difference) Assuming they will shave off a few pounds which is the point of all their SkyActiv tech. The new 2 will be around 300lbs lighter then the 120 HP Fiesta. I would take 300 lbs. lighter over 20 HP any day on any car.

Looks very similar to the showcar. The hood line looks identical.

Mazda should offer a base model that your grandmother and teen can buy AND a MAZDASPEED2 that someone like me, an adult that has badly been waiting for a sub-compact hot hatch can buy for 20G's. Not everyone driving a Mazda 2 is 16 or 80 years old. Mazda is all about the "ZOOM" "ZOOM"? Well put some ZOOM ZOOM in your new Mazda 2.

The new Mazda 2 should have more than 99hp. At least 130hp to compete within it's class. A car that hopefully looks as nice as the Hazumi concept and that will no doubt be fun to drive should have more power than 99hp. It should also have a MAZDASPEED2 version to compete with the excellent Fiesta ST. Come on Mazda.

Agreed. They should have 2 versions. An econo version for gasmileage, and a Mazdaspeed version which could go head to head with the Fiesta ST.

This looks pretty far along. We'll probably see it before the end of the calendar year.

how difficult is it to get a reasonable 110-120 hp out of a direct injected 1.5 L engine... if they can get 160 hp from 2.0L, I would think that it shouldn't be all that difficult... or even go with a 1.7 or 1.8L engine... the efficiency of the skyactiv engines is there, so they need to work on the power... and putting a small low power engine forces them to gear the car short, and that reduces fuel economy to the point that people looking at a mazda2 will only really be getting it because they NEED a small car, not necessarily a more efficient car... which all mazdas with skyactiv engines should be... if they cant get any more HP, the fuel efficiency better be like 35/45...

they just need to use the 2.0 engine it is efficient enough and it would be cost efficient due to the economies of scale look at GM and their small block V8s.

Not likely as Mazda's are one of the cheaper brands out there, despite excellent quality.

doesent the 155hp 2.0 get 41mpg in the 3? why cant they just put that in the 2 and get about 43mpg with the lighter weight and be super peppy? i'll never understand why the smallest cars also have to have the smallest engines.

To increase the city mpg where most of these cars are used. Bloated highway numbers are kept for the larger family cars that travel on Highways more.

The Skyactiv 2.0 in this would probably be a hoot, I agree.

Make the hot hatch version with th 155 hp 2.0 and an econo version with the 1.5 with around 110 hp. Better yet, how about the 268 hp. Mazdaspeed 3 2.5! That would be a great little hot rod.
