After setting a world land speed record in a 50,000-horsepower jet car, we're bringing The List hosts Jessi Combs and Patrick McIntyre back down to Earth with a to-do item more accessible for the common enthusiast: drive the Tail of the Dragon.

If you're not yet in the know, the Tail of the Dragon is an 11-mile stretch of US Route 129 that straddles Tennessee and North Carolina. This windy, forested route runs in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains and is known for one thing: curves, and lots of them.

The bulk of its estimated 318 turns are located in The Volunteer State, and the good ones are given names like Crud Corner, Hog Pen Bend and The Whip. Many a motorist and motorcyclist have overestimated their driving abilities here and paid a tax in body panels and pride, and the police now have such a presence that tickets are a rite of passage.

Still, the Dragon comes up in any conversation about the very best driving roads in the US (dozens of you have written in and suggested we tackle it), so it's off to Tennessee we go to cross another major item off The List.

This looks like a fun and a beautiful drive, but until you drive the winding road from Flagstaff to Sedona, AZ via Oak Creek Canyon, especially in the fall when everything is red, orange and yellow, there is not a more beautiful sight in the world.

On my bike, I did the Oak Creek Cayon road in the early 80's. YUP, a great ride it was.

Woohoo let's hit the twisties in a porsche with an automatic!!!! This has got to be the dumbest thing I've seen in a while nothing dangerous about those roads as compared to the roads in other countries where trucks make turns like that all the time...If it's dangerous at all or at least appears to be it's because of all the morons thinking they're fast and furious whipping around the turns and losing it...

I have driven this road many times. It is a great drive if you take care. Not so pleasant in rain or fog. I drove it a few weeks ago from Dahlonega, Ga. to Sevierville, TN. Rain & fog all the way but still a good experience.

The biggest problems on the Tail of the Dragon are: 1. Crotchrockets doing 60-80 mph coming around a blind curve where you are doing 15-25mph. 2. Attempting to view the scenery. If you pay too much attention to the scenery instead of your driving, you will become a part of that scenery. 3. People driving faster than their abilities will allow. In other words, IDIOTS. I have riden it a few times and have always encountered problems with others driving or riding too fast, or a vehicle that is too big or long to be on it in the first place. (Trucks or SUV's pulling trailers or travel trailers) It is a beautiful drive and can be done safely, but it is best to do it during the week and avoid the invasion of Crotchrockets and show offs on the weekends.

It's a wonderful road, but---A word to the wise: Do NOT attempt this in a 36' motorhome hauling a car along behind you. Yes, it can be done, but it will leave you with an ulcer and a headful of gray hair! And if your passenger has a cat on her lap, she'll feel like a pin cushion (and possibly be in need of a blood transfusion) by the time you finally make it to the end.
