A report from last week indicated that Toyota will begin trimming models from its Tacoma lineup starting with the Regular Cab in 2015, but the popular pickup will lose its first variant even sooner than that. For 2014, the Tacoma X-Runner has been dropped, though the company's SR Package could fill the need of those looking for a sporty pickup.

The X-Runner has been around since 2005 with its lowered stance, aftermarket-look body kit and bright paint colors, all of which are offered available only on V6-powered, two-wheel-drive Access Cab Tacomas. The new SR Package sounds like it will offer a somewhat similar appearance, though, with a monotone exterior paint scheme in limited colors accented with smoked headlights, but it will only be offered on Pre-Runner and 4x4 models. Other changes being made to the 2014 Tacoma include a new wheel option with black finish, a wider variety of Entune multimedia features, and the option to have the backup camera display moved from the rearview mirror to the audio system head unit.

Needs a little bit bigger wheels... I wish the Tacoma was smaller than it is... A compact truck isn't exactly compact like they were in the 90s

Just like the Toyota Matrix: "Wow, they still make these?" Either way, I think this and the Matrix would make a great used Daily Driver.

This was a long time coming. The X-Runner never really sold enough in comparison to the other trim levels... Low, Harsh ride, Fragile body kit, Low profile tires and only available in 6 speed manual isn't exactly what a lot of truck people are looking. This was more towards the people that live in cities where off roading and snow was foreign. Car enthusiasts who needed a truck only to carry stuff in the bed or people who just thought it was "pretty"... As an X-Runner owner and active on the X-Runner forum (xr-underground.com) every year that I saw (since 2009) has been suspicious of the X-Runner going out of production. So it was clearly a long time coming.

The Tundras are decent looking Trucks but the Tacoma looks like has more wrinkles than the combined faces of a 120yr old man and a similarly 120yr old bulldog. And the Xrunner is even worse, it sits so low it looks like it is lying there dead on the floor. I know there is a decent truck under all that but I do a full body shudder every time I see a Tacoma on the road. "Pretty-please" (pun intended) Toyota update it.

This truck is actually pretty beefy and quick. I read somewhere a long time ago that it tracked faster then 350z !

Not like Toyota dealers ever really kept ordering any to entice people as they were on the lots... Probably hard in the northeastern states though to sell a $32,000+ truck without 4WD...Hopefully the next iteration (if there is one) will have 4 wheel discs and a competitive AWD + tough suspension setup...
