Good things come in small packages. Or smaller packages, anyway, as Audi has been discovering with its SUV range. What started with the mammoth Q7 has since grown – or shrank – to include the smaller Q5 and the even smaller Q3, which was just confirmed for the North American market. Keen to capitalize on a positive trend, Audi has been rumored to be considering adding a Q1 to its line-up, details of which are now emerging.

The last time we checked, Audi wasn't sure if it would base a potential Q1 off the A1, upcoming A2 or next-generation A3 platform. According to reports, the decision has been made to use the A1's platform, which itself was recently expanded to include a five-door variant and even all-wheel drive. Along the same tangent, though, we're told not to expect an A1 convertible.

We're not to expect the Q1 to arrive all that soon, either. While previous reports indicated that Audi could rush its tiniest crossover onto the market within a year or two from now, the latest word is that it could take considerably longer than that. One way or another, we wouldn't expect this baby premium crossover to find its way across the Atlantic anytime soon.

Why somebody would choose such a small SUV over a wagon is completely lost on me. What is there to gain, other than fuel expenses?

feeling of security (very important for soccer moms), higher ride height (better view in city traffic). that's what they are going to tell you ;)

Agreed. You'd be surprised at the difference in higher ride height, etc.in these smaller wagons. I sat in a Mini Countryman and was floored at how different it felt inside vs what I perceived from the outside.

If you are in a car you can't see past all the damn SUVs, therefore you buy a SUV to be able to see.

Line of vision. My wife won't touch a wagon because of the stigma, and when I asked why she liked SUVs she said it was the ride height. She liked seeing further down to road. That was it.

Bring it here with the TDI...as if people won't buy a small SUV that gets over 40mpg.

I wonder if it will be more along the line of the 'CrossPolo' that VW do in Europe? I guess it's aimed at the Countryman, at least the Audi take on the idea won't be so hideously ugly.

vw is developing a polo based mini-suv which the q1 will be based on. the crosspolo is just a polo with some added ride height
