While the 2011 Targa Newfoundland doesn't officially kick off until Monday, a handful of competitors have already arrived in St. John's to take advantage of the Open Road Motorsports Targa School. Operated by veterans of the event, the school gives novice competitors a little taste of the days to come. Glen Clarke, our instructor, routinely pilots a Porsche 911 to accolades and glory, so his word is worth pure gold to our motley crew. Over the course of eight hours, the Grand Touring Flyin' Miata team was introduced to the basics of navigation, ran a trial stage and generally sorted the roles of driver and co-pilot.

Our class included targa competitors from years past as well as newcomers like ourselves, including racers piloting a Ferrari Enzo, a delicious Porsche 914 and a completely sinister Audi 200 Avant Turbo AWD. A few additional racers have also set up camp at the local Holiday Inn, including a Maserati MC12, a Ferrari F430 Spyder, a Lamborghini Murciélago Super Veloce and a Saleen S7 from ZRAuto.ca. We can't wait to see how those bruisers fair on the demanding roads of Newfoundland.

      I live in St. John's and routinely drive by there on my way home from class. I was a little puzzled as to why someone would bring a Ferrari Enzo, Lamborghini Murcielago or a Maserati MC12 to a place with roads as smooth as a teenagers face. I find it bumpy driving around in a ford edge, they should find it... lively...

        Some of these were burning around Torbay Rd last night. There's that real nice patch of new pavement by MacDonald/where the old Shopper's was. lol

          Totally going to the car show tomorrow. Going to skip on past the ugly hatchbacks and porsches right on over to the exotic italian supercar pornography.

        You know, I was thinking the same thing. Especially with all the construction going on currently. If I had a dollar for every time one of those cars will scrape...

          You would have enough money to purchase ALL of those cars. In total they will probably write off the cost of a 430 during the next week or so.

      That Miata isn't going to look so stupid when it's eating the lunch of some of the so called "supercars".

      The first picture I've seen of a Miata being the tallest car in a group! I can't wait to see this rally unfold. Have a blast man I'll be rooting for you, I donated to the cause.

      Supercars do not work for road rallies. They're too sensitive, they ride too low, and they're built too light. Keep it on the track.

      I'd be pissed off your parked that stupid miata next to my supercar. And where are the pictures of this sinister old school Audi? All sorts of fail from you right now.

        @cashsixeight
        so you'd be pissed off if a miata parked next to your supercar, but ok with an audi 200t? I wouldn't be suprsied if that v8 miata has a higher power to weight ratio than most of those supercars.

        "I'd be pissed off your parked that stupid miata next to my supercar." That doesn't even make sense. You = "all sorts of fail"

        Leave it to cashsixeight to make an asinine statement. You were doing good there for a while. Now you've just gone back to your old ways.

      Can you please get that miata out of the way so I can see more of the supercars?

      Now that the 500+ horsepower super-cars with well heeled and well meaning, but likely under-experienced, owners are showing up en masse I give this event no more than a couple years before it is shut down over some sort of "tragic" incident or another. Shame, really, because running in GT has been a dream of mine but I won't likely have the time or cabbage for another decade or so. Just look at the difference in ground clearance between the miata (meticulously prepared over several years and veteran of one TNF already) and the two exotic's next to it.. I don't want to think about what happens to an Enzo when it hits a pothole at near-triple-digit speeds while the suspension is already fully compressed.

        To be fair, that last spot isn't a real spot anyways...might as well take advantage of it, no?

      This is great! I'm in St. John's, and I got to see a few of the cars driving around the city today. Looking forward to seeing the race :D

      Did they take a wrong turn to the Gumball rally? Those are NOT cars I would expect to be well suited for the Targa Newfoundland.
