Porsche 911 Turbo S "Edition 918 Spyder" – Click above for high-res image gallery

The big news from Porsche lately is the go-ahead and pricing attached to the production of the 918 Spyder. But if you read the fine print on the official announcement, you may have noticed the German automaker's current performance flagship mentioned.

To celebrate the launch of the 918 Spyder, Porsche is offering a special edition of the 911 Turbo S. Called, appropriately enough, the 911 Turbo S "Edition 918 Spyder", it's essentially the same as the standard Turbo S, only with some extra decals, special colors and unique trim. The model will be available exclusively to customers ordering the 918 Spyder, can be had in either coupe or convertible, and carries the same sticker price.

So what's the point? To keep customers who are waiting for delivery of their 918 happy in the meantime. Now that's one heck of an appetizer if we've every seen one. And at $160k+ (on top of the $845k price of the 918) one very pricey option as well.

Whether you like the cars or not, this is genius marketing.

Guys who order the 918 Spyder get to show off their status sooner, Porsche upsells to a group who clearly can afford it but need something special to be inspired to buy, and the company moves some more 911s at the end of this version's life cycle.

And IMHO the car looks cool. Plus no one's ever done something like this, so everyone will talk about it.

to those complaing that the 911 is not a Spyder, its simply a placeholder

If I was rich... I would totally go for the package deal!

      Love the green accents!

the subtle accents are indeed, really well done.

damn, i'm a Porsche fanboi, but i was expecting the special edition turbo S to have something like 10 extra horsepower, some carbon fiber parts a la GT2 RS, or at least the aero kit as standard.

oh , well , i'm not going to order this with my 918 Spyder....

Interesting marketing strategy. Also moves a 911 turbo that is going to be soon discontinued for the newer generation, and allows Porsche to justify a higher (higher) price on the limited 918 Spyder.

Funny how this car will be labelled a "Spyder" but can be a coupe. That will cause no end of confusion down the line years from now.

Collectors will also be stymied by needing to keep the 911 turbo Spyder along with the 918 Spyder for the sake of completeness.

At least it isn't a Cygnet.

great! another overpriced porsche variant consisting of colors and ddecals that were previously not available. when will they add the 'focus sport appearance package edition'?
almost as ground breaking as the bentley going 205 on ice, wooo!

Ya know, the problem with my mother-in-law is that it seems every single thought that pops into her head falls right out of her mouth.. she can't stop it, even the stupid things.

Porsche is beginning to remind me of her. Maybe some if their ideas should be shelved?

This option provides the demanding 918 owner with a "reasonably functional spare supercar" when the 918 is in the shop.

What, did Porsche reanimate P.T. Barnum?
Porsche heard the Mustang was going to exceed the 911 in terms of Special Editions... this could not stand.
        @ Lutz
Anything built in limited numbers compared to the main stream car is a special edition. The RS GT2/GT3 are no where near a normal 911.
These are not special editions, they are normal ones...
I think Porsche has the Mustang beat in terms for speical editions for along time now

        911 S
        911 tubro
        911 GT2 RS
        911 GT3

I look at it this way... If i had $845,000 to buy the 918, why not go for the package deal and get both of them.

/sorry off-topic but, is any one else having issues replying to comments on Autoblog? I can post new but can't reply to anything... and it irks me that i can't reply to some of the really dumb comments on here. :P
