2011 Subaru WRX STI vs Robot Spider – Click above to watch video after the jump

Needless to say, we're already fans of the 2011 WRX STI. Subaru, in turn, is apparently a fan of 80's pop band A-Ha and their breakthrough video for Take On Me. A new ad for the sporty Japanese sedan shows car versus robot spider duking it out in sketchbook form. The ad touts the WRX STI as "pure performance", while the 305 horsepower turbocharged boxer and symmetrical all-wheel drive system are clearly useful in fleeing a fate of mechanized death.

Check out the ad after the jump, as well as the A-Ha video for a refresher on life in 1985. Thanks for the tip, Kevin!

The drawings of the car look like a Corolla.

      sub-stiggy :D

Weirdly enough, whenever I'm buying a car, I imagine it in that very situation (being blasted at by the enemies as i dodge out of the way, not the stylised animation). The other situation is driving down the side of a volcano, dodging bits of flying igneous rock and lava.

Forget about the Subie commercial, the A-Ha video brought me back to my childhood in the 80's. That's got to be one of the top 5 videos of all time.

        Thirded.

To be young and carefree again... :P

Ugly car. I'd take the EVO over this any day.

        @geo.stewart

The Bugeye was the ugliest of the 3 GD variants. Yes, even uglier than the Pig Nose.

Why? So you can spend more time waiting for it to be fixed in a shop than you'll spend driving it? Or is it so you can experience far inferior ride quality on your everyday roads?

2005-2009 Legacy (especially 2007-09 Spec B. If only the US had gotten the 3.0R Spec B 6MT... I spend more time in my Legacy on the highway than on fun turbo roads.)
1992-1997 SVX (especially with a manual gearbox conversion)

The best looking cars from Subaru to date. Late 90s Legacy and 2.5RS Impreza Coupe as runners up.

A new, actually GOOD LOOKING sleek 3-door coupe, built on the GR chassis is so blatantly obvious, it PAINS me that Subaru refuses to build it.

The hatch looks pretty good but the sedan is horrible. Looks like a riced out family car.

        Jason,

Keep your worthless opinions to yourself.
I've owned an '06 IX MR and now own a new '10 X GSR. Probably some of the most reliable cars i've ever owned. I'm not sure where you are getting your info but it's definitely flawed.
I'll take a GC over anything newer. If only we got them with a turbo.

This commercial would have been great if they were coming out with a new Fuji FA200.

Checked out an STI last weekend - laughed out loud when I glanced at the window sticker.

      That was a TERRIBLE commercial.

If I were someone who didn't know anything about cars, that commercial would have more than likely turned me off to the vehicle.

Mediocrity apparently applies to their marketing firm as well.

        Nightflight, you're spot on!
That wasn't taken from the A-Ha video! The whole purpose of the A-Ha video was the guy was in a comic strip, the girl was real and the dude came out into real life.

The STI commercial was just comical. End of comparison.

        @naggs
        The sti is faster.
Also the sti is still a wrx, just a more focused version. The full badge is impreza wrx sti.
Why does the sti even exist, the wrx is actually faster for thousands less.
Just goes to show you what age group they're marketing to. That is a old video and not many young kids can afford their $35,000+ asking price

I'm at work right now, and the firewall blocks the vid, but I do see that car, VERY NICE JOB! I'll take this over the lst couple of years models.
STi and EVO were hot in eraly and mid 2000, but now with less same price you can buy a lot more power and car from Ford (Mustang GT) and GM (Camaro SS).
Not true. With an STI/EVO you still get more in comparison. AWD to drive in the winter (Mustang) and having the ability to turn (camaro)

      Giant Enemy Crab!
That's not a robot! That nasty critter chasing the car is out of Starship Troopers. Horrible script, but plenty of bimbo eye candy.
Anyone who has watched the Eureka episode called "Momstrocity" will find this chase in the ad very familiar.
